Please abort these two WUs. Don't know how far you are along into the rebuild process, but here's is a tip which is older than dirt and applies more than ever today, especially if are/planning to run Vista: Split the drive into more than one partition, put BOINC and all your other goodies on the new one(s) instead, and treat 'C' as a system drive only. The truly wise and affluent go as far as having more than one physical drive onboard to give even more isolation between the system and user 'stuff' than multiple partitions do. This would avoid the unfortunate situation you find yourself in when Windows or 'something else' decides to turn the 'C' drive into 'coloring book' in many instances. For example, I put Windows, Security Software, and other essential tools I really don't want users horsing around with on the C drive and then restrict their access to it as much as possible. User applications go on a different drive/partition, and User data on a different one from that. If you don't mind some hand to hand combat with Windows, you can move most of the other nearly infinite user crapola Windows stores by default on the system drive elsewhere as well Now that MS has seen the light and started really tightening up access as you get closer to the core system in Vista, I think most people will find this is far superior to the old way of cramming everything into the Program Files folder and other system folders on a single partition. It will also buy you some other nice things like improved performance overall for longer due to less fragmentation on the system drive, as another example. The only thing which puzzles me is what took MS so long to get a clue about this, and then only go half way implementing it. (Not really, when you look up the definition of 'half-assed' you will find a picture of the Redmond campus next to it!) ;-) Alinator |
