Your multiplier is way off it should be at 11. It looks like your only using half the speed of the CPU.

Thanks Seaking57. As I'm using a kvm, will try adjusting now.

Didn't have to do anything. Currently showing: - 201.01 x 11.0= 2211.16

So did your benchmarks and CPU-Z reports double, and your crunch times halve, after you got the multi up to 11?

Or is it the special April Fool's Day version of the BIOS, that drops down to half speed as soon as the OS asks it to do any real work?

reinstall bios? using the asus update always works welll here ( I download it to my desk top after making a folder, extract it, and point the asus update manager to the downloaded .bin file). Does the task manager preformance tab show all 4 cores 100% running BOINC? Does the device manager show 4 processors? I am sure you already know your way and what your doing, just trying to help. /salute

@ Richard/Winterknight/Seaking57/Dennis

I HATE COMPUTERS!!!

CPUZ was showing a 5.5 multiplier, yet the AI Booster was showing 11x Multiplier. Got the mobo manual out & went into bios & changed the AI Tuning from auto to manual, then set cpu multiplier by 11 & rebooted.

BIG problem, rig would not boot, so reset cmos & rebooted. Reset all values to what they were & it booted up fine.

Checked AI Booster & found the FSB had changed from 200.90 to 1004.79. Checked CPUZ & found that it now shows 11x multiplier, yet I did not do anything but reset the cmos.

29/03/2008 17:21:13|| 5660 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

Weird!!!!

Anyway, thanks guys for all the pointers. Very Much Appreciated.

Now looking forward to really crunching some wu's!!!!

Please check Your BIOS setting for Cool and Quiet. It must be set to off.

Try Suspending SETI and do a new CPU-Z. If the clock drops to 1100 MHz with SETI dormant, Your Cool and Quiet is on for sure.

Your CPU-Z MUST show 2200 MHz even with just the desktop loaded. (No BOINC).

Why the OS does not consider SETI to be 'real' work, I do not know, but my personal experience with 3 boards is:

If the clock is not at full speed with just the desktop loaded, the thing is going to fool You and throttle down when You don't expect it to.

(Maybe the O/S does not 'consider' SETI to be real work ;). What I mean is that BOINC and SETI are running at low Priority and this may 'fool' the O/S to think that only 'household' work is being done, and lowers the clock).

Best of luck

ChrisD

Thanks ChrisD, but beat you to it by 11 seconds. No matter, at least it will give others, pointers for when they experience problems with their Phenoms.

I just cannot understand why resetting the cmos worked! After bios update, I rebooted system anyway.

AFAIK all MB manufacturers says a CMOS reset is needed after an update. I've found most often simply entering BIOS and then saving and exiting is enough, but not always...
Windows: "Where do you want to go today?"
Linux: "Where do you want to go tomorrow?"
...
FreeBSD: "Are you guys coming, or what?"
"(II) do I need RAC? No, I don't." from FreeBSD Xorg.0.log ;)

I forgot that one, sorry.

After flashing all my BIOS'es I had to clear the CMOS before the boards would work with the Phenoms without nagging ...

I actually forgot that one myself from getting the first board until I had my second. Cursed for about two hours before I remembered what I did that made that first board work :)

I thought I'd never forget this one again, but I did when writing the previous post. Must be the age starting to take its toll. ;)

Ouch! Thanks for reminding me ChrisD. I agree, it must be my age as well.

Weird, I had the exact same problem with my Phenom 9600BE in a Gigabyte GA-MA70FX-DQG AM2+ board. Gigabyte's status/overclocking program showed the multiplier at 11.5, but CPU-Z read 5.5. I had assumed I had an old version of CPU-Z that was written before the Phenoms came out, and just wasn't reading it correctly, plus the original BIOS didn't have the option of changing the multiplier anyway. I flashed to the newest BIOS revision last weekend and my benchmarks have doubled, as well as CPU-Z showing the right speeds. Must be something in the older BIOS versions?

Sirius, also note that the first CPU-Z shot you posted doesn't have the same info as the second one. The first one doesn't have HT Link which is a key factor in the AMD processors. My guess is that it wasn't fully recognizing the processor, but since you've already figured that out, this is a moo point. (Yes, moo. Like what a cow thinks, it doesn't really matter. LOL)

Well spotted & Thanks Dennis. I hadn't noticed at all.

It all helps other Phenom buyers, which in turn helps them to crunch better, so everybody wins.

Regards

They are very sensitive to power problems. I have seen several lock ups caused by glitches on the mains power and even third core lock outs caused by the same. I have just ordered an on-line UPS to try and eliminate lock ups caused by dirty mains. None of my other computers are as bad as the phenoms for this.

I know a power-conditioning UPS will give your power supply more life. I thought that a good power supply (80plus certified) with low flutter will do more for the motherboard in terms of stability than a UPS. Of course, there is no substitute for a good motherboard with multi-stage power and solid capacitors.

Sorry Daniel, yes a very late night.

Just came across a problem that other Phenom users might come across.

After updating bios & resetting cmos, left rig crunching merrily away. Came back to it several hours later, & found that it had rebooted & stayed stuck on bios page.

Couldn't figure out why, so rebooted - same problem, so turned it off completely. Came back to it an hour later, rebooted - same problem. Switched off & started thinking, what did I change since the last update?

All I did was to turn down the variable speed cpu cooler. Turned it back up & rebooted - it worked. Rig now running 14 hours solid with no problems. As it's 4 core, is it possible that it requires a minimum level of cooling?

Sounds like it can't get rid of the initial spike in heat on startup quick enough. I had a similar experience with my QuadFX until I added some Arctic Silver 5 and more case fans.

Thanks Spear. It's max'ed out on case fans, so will get some artic silver 5 tomorrow & retry.

Well my opinion of AMD customer support remains high! I 2 day aired my CPU to California. It was delivered to AMD at 9 AM on Friday and John called me at 3 PM the same day and said "It took an hour but it eventually locked up in testing. We'll be sending you a new one on Monday morning."

Yay!

The there's hope for me. I've sent back my dud one with the dodgy SSE unit. I expect the retailer won't be able to reproduce it since it requires more than just sticking in a spare board and seeing if it boots. I'll probably be sent it back and have to take it to AMD direct.

Well today I just got my MSI-K9A2 Platinum, Radeon HD 3870, Corsair XMS2 1066Ram, and a new Scythe heat sink. Now just need to wait till next week for the Phenom 9850's to go on sale. Can't wait to try out a true spider with overdrive.
