You said something about cheating in BOINC? The cheating was done in Classic. All of the means to do so that were used in Classic have been removed. The basic reason is to gain more credits than you deserve. Method 1: Crunch a task until it is within 2 minutes of completion. Save it. Complete and return. Now for every task that comes your way, substitute the task that you saved at 99% complete for the one downloaded. Complete (garbage return, but it used to generate credit in Classic). The anti cheat for this is validation. If it does not verify, it does not get credits in BOINC. Classified as blatant cheat. Method 2: Overclock until you system is barely stable, but the Floating Point chip is over the edge. Won't affect many programs other than the science apps. Anti cheat in BOINC: Validation. Classified as inadvertant. The intent was usually to do more good science, rather than none. Some overclocking can be done without damaging the results, but too much will damage the science. Method 3: Cherry picking. Classic had some tasks that ran faster than others. If you got one of the slow ones, discard it and hope for a faster one on the next fetch. Anti cheat in BOINC. Credit is based on resources used, not on one per task completed. Method 4: Teamwork. Crunch a result and hand it off to your friends. Everyone returns it for credit. Anti cheat in BOINC. Only the installation of BOINC that was issued the task can return it. I am certain that there are a few more methods that I have missed. However, since a few bad apples were turning the science to garbage, everyone pays the price a bit. There was also the issue that the backend was not supplying tasks as fast as users were demanding them, so, the replication rate in Classic averaged about 8. I believe that highest replication was up around 50. In BOINC S@H, the replication rate has been as high as 5, and is currently 2. Much less wasted CPU time this way. BOINC WIKI |

You said something about cheating in BOINC? Why would anyone cheat? And in a nut shell, how would you do it? Darwinism should stay the hand of medical science. |

Two basic reasons for the way it's done now. 1.) Makes for higher confidence in the quality of the returned data for any given Workunit. 2.) Guards against some of the more trivial cheats which were present in Classic and a couple of obvious ones for BOINC as well. As far as the screensaver goes, I rarely use it (in fact most of my hosts can't display it all), but IIRC there are options in your SAH preferences to approximate the old display fairly close. a-bear.......each work unit is crunched by at least 2 computers and the results must agree to make the science valid. If your "wingman" is late then you have to wait for him/her to return it and yours goes pending while you are waiting. If your wingman drops out of the project then the work has to be sent out again to another computer......etc......etc....until another computer completes the work unit. I haven't had SETI running on my computer since November '05 when it became part of BOINC. At the time, I just couldn't get it to work on my powerbook. After a few failed attempts, I eventually gave up. I reinstalled the software again in the past week and now it works. I was surprised to not see myself get credits for my work. From what I remember, I used to be credited immediately. This work unit of data being crunched by at least two computers: Is this a more recent checksum? Off topic, is there anyway to get the old screen? screenshot I found on google That looks like how I remember it at least. If not, no big deal, I just liked that one better over the floating/revolving 3D version I have now. |

I have over 14,000 pending credits. Think of it as "in the bank" not lost. You will receive credit eventually, some just take longer than others. Keep on crunching and don't worry about it. |
