. . . i find Seth Shostak to be of interest: with 'The Future of SETI': Searches for extraterrestrial intelligence (abbreviated SETI) have no obvious hunting ground and no clear route to discovery. Instead, after more than 40 years researchers have amassed a mountain of speculation and only a small hill of experiment. If sentient beings exist among the stars, they have remained beyond the grasp of our instruments . . . Humble beginnings. This eight-antenna prototype of the Argus omnidirectional array represents a whole new kind of radio telescope: one that relies on massive computing power to synthesize a radio image of everything in a vast region of the sky. Oh...I've always wanted to adopt my very own scientist. He'd be like a pet that I could keep under my bed or hammock. I could drag him out when I get bored with all of you people. So, unless someone wants to adopt Dr. A or K first, who's going to adopt me?!? Or Es, the one with the physics background, for that matter?!? Eh?! Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

But are they house trained? Angela is my SETI friend and I PMd her to let her know we miss her and need her input in this thread. :) Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

But are they house trained? Eric is most certainly NOT housebroken. He leaves his crap all over the place! |

But are they house trained? Do you want to adopt some additional scientists? :) Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

But are they house trained? Angela, then you should put some conditioned reflexes in him to make him clean up after himself. Maybe give him some real treats the next time you set up an experiment with him and the raccoons? "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

While I appreciate all of the suggestions for behavior modification tips, techiques and devices, I have to confess that Eric's inability to be shaped, trained, changed, conditioned or modified in any way, shape or form is really part of his charm. When Eric is gone for a week or so at a conference or on an observing run, I start to miss his absent-minded academic cluttering ways... While I wouldn't go so far as to say that recycling his empty Mountain Dew cans gives purpose and meaning to my life, I would have to admit that a tiny part of me smiles each time I find one of his "calling cards". I think I'll keep my messy little adopted scientist around just the way he is - detritous and all. And thanks, but I don't really need another one underfoot. One scientist per household is critical mass as far as I'm concerned! Fondly, Angela |

Awwwww, you two are so cute. :-) Reading your post makes me smile as well. Yes, they are adorable with their flaws and all, and they put up with us and our flaws as well. That's how it's supposed to be. Maybe your next experiment should be with some of that beer, he likes to much, that Snow Cap Ale? I'm not sure the raccoons like that, so there's more for him then. ;-D "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

I'm not adopting anything that bites. *shifts eyeballs* I've seen some stuff around here that makes me scared to dangle my arm over the bedside. A well contained scientist under the bed would suit me nicely, thank you. I only need it for certain things....not everyday things! And not bitings. I'll feed it leftover scrambled eggs and frozen dinners. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! I did NOT authorize this belly writing! |
