Well the old man can still build a PC! The quad fired right up and is installing Ubuntu 7.10 right now. Might be crunching before the night is over.

I used to be a cruncher like you, then I took an arrow to the knee.

Let me know what happens when you start to OC that puppy...er, kitty.
What cpu cooler and mobo did you choose, and did you get a G0 stepping?

Great...

Now I don't know where I fall in this banter!

150 PC's......254 Cores..... 99% are authorized....In one manner or another...

Healthy? Obsessed? Enigma wrapped up in a conundruum?

Who's to tell!?!?

One or two machines crunching on idle: casual user.
10 machines crunching full time: interested user.
Buying all the latest hardware and o/cing it beyond belief (msattler, I'm looking at you!): hardcore user.
Running it on every machine you have permission to: healthy obsession.
Running it on every machine you don't have permission to: unhealthy obsession.

My guess will be that it is the one who is paying the power bill out of his own pocket ;) ??

Seriously, how much power does Your 8 machines toll Your power bill?

No offence intended..

I have 2 hosts running only, although I could start a couple of machines more, but my budget says stop. :(

Happy crunching :)

I'd say about $200.00/month for the crunchers...it's gonna get a bit tough when the weather warms and I have to run AC 24/7 to keep the house cool enough to keep them online.....

Perhaps if you ask nicely, the crunchers will let you and the kitties move into their cool house with them. roflmao.

I guess I am similar, but at a lower level to Mark.

I have 2 Quads on SETI and 2 other rigs on Einstein

The power bill seems to be between £50 and £75 per month (say $100 5o $150 per mnonth).. At least there is no A/C issue in the summer.
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

Update on the quad...

Named it Betsy, first cow on the SETI@Home farm.

The hardware is all running fine under Win XP Pro but Ubuntu is giving me fits. I am sorry wingmen for hanging 7 WU out into space on the first install attempt.

G0 Q6600 cooled by a AC Freezer Pro 7
GA-G31M-S2L MB, 2gig PC800 ram

Currently have an ide 80gig HD and CD/DVD-R installed. These will be replaced by 2 sata HD in raid 0 and a sata DVD-R/W.

Not going to O/C this rig for now but will be running Crunch3r's apps.

I haven't given up on running Ubuntu. I think most the problems are with the onboard video. May end up buying a cheapo ATI video card and disabling the onboard video. Will have to see.

I have the EXACT same motherboard with an e4500, overclocking is easy on this mobo, but I cant POST over 3.0ghz.

The onboard video is absolute crap and killed windows whenever I installed the drivers. I have a new video card coming in tomorrow to solve that. XFX 7400gs from Newegg for cheap with a rebate to boot.

I tend to remember a user in London who's flat were electrically heated. A bit expensive these days, but he would be the ideal landlord for a bunch of crunchers, if he could stand all the noise. :)

With so many crunshers having heat problems in the summer season, it might be a good idea creating a thread with practical ideas on how to cool Your crunchers best and most power efficent.

Ideas Folks?

Not exactly practical on a wide scale, but do what I do- I have 1 laptop located in the basement (a former Rec. Room, now a "guest bedroom"); it (Room Temperature) is consistently about 10 Deg. F. lower than the Upper Level.

I quess that's another fact that push on over in to the obsession cat-agory. Do you have a dedicated AC system to keep your computers running? I do.

North - South teams? Ship the computers to the southern hemisphere in April, back north in October.

The only other thought I have had was to transfer the farm from my living room into the cooler basement....but I have doubts that the heat sinking abilities of the concrete basement walls could keep things cool down there...
might have to experiment with it in the next few months....
Maybe moving just a few of them down there would cut the heatload in the main living space down a bit.
Would have to invest either in some cables long enough to snake upstairs to my kvm or some wireless or other solution to communicate with them.....
And reboots when they crash would require trekking down to the basement...
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
