These are 6 of the computers crunching Seti WUs. Seti is all I'm focusing on right now. I also have my main system and my wifes AMD 64bit crunching in the background. I'm constanly looking thru listings at EBAY for wholesale lots of desktops and would like to add five more SFF style computers to the farm like the EVO 510s shown in this picture. I Originally got these for CGI rendering but I have not had the time to get in to that to much since I put the farm together so I setup BoincView on my desktop along with RealVNC on all nodes so I can run them remotely. I will need to move these to the basement because the HEAT in that small room is becoming a real issue! Five Compaq p4 2.4Ghz EVO 510s and an old P3 1Ghz, 8 port 100mb hub. ------------------------------------------------- I'm not sure I have an OCD but lately, when I close my eyes, I see WUs. BaWahaahaahaa! |

Kind words from the kitties, thank you. still would like to have it clocked to something like your quad though, then we'd see a nice RAC. |

Heat buildup in the room can be a very large issue. This is why most of my boxes are run wireless and headless. That way they can be anywhere in the house. Spreads the heat and joy throughout the home. |

I guess I like centralized heating, cooling and computing, As soon as I can and I do mean soon, something will or should get better here, Then maybe I could put the 4th PC back into operation. :D Oh and Kitties don't like Night Lights, LED type or not, Angel's sleeping with Me again and not crying out anymore at night since I removed the night light from the bathroom, It's in the Kitchen now. :D The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

My 'hobby' (read obsession) has a nice home in the basement. My wife likes it because it is warm down there. I really need to clean it up though... The specs are, left to right, top to bottom: Pentium D 935, Pentium D 930, Q6600, Pentium 4 (not in use) Pentium D 915, Q6600, Q6600, Q6600 All except the P4 are custom builds, using the same case. I also have a laptop upstairs, and 3 PCs at work. No, I am not obsessed...just REALLY intent in finding E.T. Clk2HlpSetiCty:::PayIt4ward |

The 12 steps and key symptoms of a BOINCaholic 1. We admitted we were powerless over BOINC and that our lives had become unmanageable without it. So we just gave in and attached to as many projects as we can find. 2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves, the BOINC projects, could keep us sane. 3. Made a decision to turn our will, our lives and our CPU’s over to the care of any and all BOINC projects as we understand them. Even if we don’t understand them, we still attach to them regardless. 4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of every computer controlled device we could get our hands on, and attached them to a BOINC project. 5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another message board user, the exact nature of our CPU type and operating system. 6. We were entirely ready to have BOINC remove all work unit defects and queue massive amounts of work for ever CPU. 7. Humbly asked David Anderson to remove any project with shortcomings that might grant reduced credit or lower RAC. 8. Made a list of all computers we had detached from the projects, and became willing to mend to them all and attach them to BOINC. 9. Made direct amends to such computers wherever possible by buying new memory, graphics cards and RAM for them, except when to do so would injure them or others. 10. Continued to take personal inventory of CPUs and when we had cash, promptly admitted it and purchased more computers and parts. 11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our online contact with BOINC, as we understand it, praying for more work units, massive credit and the some way to control the heat being produced by all the CPUs. 12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other BOINCaholics, and to practice our addiction as often as possible. .............. Johnney. |

Can you explain more please Sirius? If I remember this correctly - switches are intelligent and "learn" where the devices attached to them are so can direct IP traffic from source to destination. Hubs are dumb, so direct IP traffic from source to all destinations which means that the traffic through them is slower due to clashes, rebroadcasts etc. The main advantage would be seen when you are using VNC, it would respond quicker & more smoothly. (I could of course be talking nonsense ;) ) |

I thought a switch and a hub are basically the same thing?? A hub is a broadcast device, operating at Layer 1 of the OSI model, where if one device on the hub wants to talk to another, it simply shouts out "hey, where are you?" and then the appropriate destination responds "over here!". Only two devices can communicate at a time (efficiently anyway), and the chance of data collisions are high. Switches are smart devices, operating at the Layer 2 of the OSI model, that typically have a buffer or cache for every device's connected MAC address. This way, when a device says "hey, where are you?" the hub checks the destination MAC address and says to itself, "hey, I know where that is" and points it to the appropriate destination. This allows for more than one device to communicate on the switch at a time because each device thinks they have direct communication with the destination, and this also helps prevent data collisions, thus attaining higher data throughput than a hub. Then there's managed switches, which for all intents and purposes are just higher end Layer 2 devices, and routers which are Layer 3 devices of the OSI model. I'll leave those for more advanced discussion. Suffice to say, to a networking guru, there's a major difference between a hub, switch, managed switch and a router. :-) |

Also, a hub is only half duplex - signal only one-way. A switch is full duplex - 2 way communication. 4 rigs on a 10/100 hub - total speed 25mbs (Half Duplex = 100mbs one way) 4 rigs on a sitch - total speed 50mbs. (Full duplex = 200mbs, 100mbs each way) Hubs broadcast the signal being sent netwide until received by rig concerned. Switch sends signal only to specified rig. |

Thanks fellow crunchers... I do a little bit of both eBay and other places, But not on bidding usually as It ends up costing too much and I'm not rich, yet. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

OK, so I couldn't resist posting my own little farm in the basement . . . It's not much but the photo shows (if I did it right): 1. Dell P4 1.9GHz (WinXP) 2. Home-built P4 2.4GHz (WinME) 3. Gateway P4 1.8GHz (WinXP) 4. No-name P4 1.7GHz (WinXP) 5. Dell Dual Core 1.8GHz (Vista) 6. Dell Dual Core 1.8GHz (Vista) Elsewhere, through-out the house I also have: 7. Dell XPS P4-hyperthreaded 3.8GHz (WinXP) 8. Dell Dual Core 3.0GHz (WinXP) 9. Dell P4-hyperthreaded 2,8GHz (WinXP) 10. Dell Latitude P3 1.2GHz (WinXP) I used to have 7 or 8 more computers in the basement of various speeds ranging all the way down to my first Pentium 100MHz computer. I replaced those in January with the 2 new Vista machines as I felt the power consumption wasn't worth the credits they were producing. I'm getting over 1000 credits/day out of each of the 2 Vista machines whereas I was getting about 300 credits total out of the computers they replaced. And Goodwill had no problem taking the ancient computers off my hands. |
