To My Wingmen,

I experienced a loss in the family last week. My P4 3.4ghz WinXP machine experienced a catastrophic hard drive failure. In addition to all of my apps running there, I lost all work in progress for SETI@Home. If you are teamed with computer ID 4154328, any work units that it was crunching are gone. I am deeply sorry for the delay in getting these results crunched. Does anyone know of a way to invalidate them more quickly than waiting for the expiration?

Thanks!

Sir W

Sir W

I may be wrong, but I believe that if you reinstall BOINC and SETI on a replacement hard disk, you can merge with the "lost" host and all the "lost" tasks will be resent to the new host that has been created.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, the resend_lost_results feature has been turned off, so the work cannot be recovered. If the merge is possible, doing a detach from the project afterward would release all work, though.

I too would like to apologize to my wingmen. when cleaning folders out of my program files folder, I inadvertently clicked on the boinc folder and shift-deleted it. Sorry guys!

Apologies to my Wingmen also. Several problems caused the shutdown, don't know for how long, of these computers. I did a reset and detach but WU's are left hanging. 4113516, 4145276, 4126422, 4147182, 4131534 and 4121607.

I was much too brief in my comment about using detach to release work. Neither reset nor detach send a message, so nothing can happen server side until the core client contacts the servers again. Reset clears out some information, but not enough for the servers to recognize that work has been abandoned unless the project has resend_lost_results enabled. Detach clears out more, and if the host is attached again the servers can figure out that it was detached and reattached. In that case all the old work is given "Outcome: Client detached" and the host gets fresh work if it requests some.

Apologies to wingmen paired with my Pent M. For unknown reason, as yet, it had a failure of PSU about 2 hrs ago. Replacement psu, old but known to work, also fails to activate computer.

Have put this old AMD 2000+ back online, so I can stay in touch, but cannot connect HDD's from Pent M as they are SATA ad this old clunker is IDE only.

If pennies can stretch that far looks like I might have to get new Mobo, cpu and psu. And it will have to be an Intel core2 I think. Must go do some pricing.

Hmmmm.....

SATA drive adapters/controllers were pretty cheap the last time I looked. Might be a quick and dirty fix to look into.

Well, I'll also add my sincere apologies, on behalf of one of my over-friendly, PC loving, hyper-active young cats! In the space of 10 mins, it had, unknown to me, merged my original PC with another I'd just got started on S@H! Not much of a problem. Got original PC back on S@H, download work and find that the 'newer' PC has 4 or 5 results more to return, than it has WUs in its Task List. Not so good. I can only assume it had been detatched at some point, in that 10 mins I was making some fresh coffee - real coffee, I hasten to add. Needless to say, I've since made a couple of flip-up perspex keyboard covers, but it is a real shame I can't get those WUs back.

Yes, even in the UK, PCI SATA controller cards are little dearer than a decent Wireless card. There again, there are so many boards out there, which are a little bit 'mean' with the number of PCI slots they provide - more especially the ones for the newer CPUs.

Update to problem, definitely mobo failure, it also caused spare psu to fail. Have pci SATA card which recognises the 500GB data drives but not the boot/system/progs drives, where BOINC lives. Think there could be difference in the way intel sata controller and other controllers work, must research further.
