Looking forward to having a wee dram in his honour again!

That I will do, when colleagues confirm Dennis has reached his various destinations.

Thanks Keith, and Jack L!

Greetings everyone,

As I did a few years ago, so have I done again today. I have created another dedication page on my BOINC website for Dennis "Dogbytes" Peters. This is my tribute to 2 great people I so briefly knew in this lifetime. I am proud to call them my friends. Rocky and Dogbytes will never be forgotten. My sig has the link to my website. Enjoy! -- Siran

Unfortunately I cannot open the XHTML dedication files.

Something to do with file type not being recognised. Where do I go to get a application to open the dedication?

XML (XHTML) should be opened by your browser without you ever noticing.

Are you using an older version of "Internet Explorer"? (Possibly IE Version 6 for XP?)

I tried my IE and got a similar problem.

However I never use IE.

My normal browser has no problems. (Opera 9+)

Just a guess but you might need to update your version of IE... OR Siran needs to recode his pages..

If Siran does not mind I will do a plain text copy of his web page here for those who can not negotiate javascript / xml menus and xml pages..

(If Siran or anyone thinks I should not copy this text here just red-x my post and it will be removed.)

However I think it is worth sharing because Siran collected the voices of many that cared for DogBytes.

I will miss Dennis sense of decency and caring nature...and i will miss his ribald and outrageous sense of humor...The echo of his hearty laughter on Skype is a sweet sound that i shall never hear again.

Dennis your Spirit walks amongst those that have returned home before you. May you once again find peace.

Dennis was a man who knew how to be human and how to share his unique view on life.

I spoke to him once on the phone. He had a very warm way of being and was one of those people who made you feel immediately at ease.

I'll miss him because he often stopped us in our tracks and then some how made us sparkle with his own sense of humour..

My fondest memory of Dennis was getting drunk with him on Skype... A bottle of rum creme fell in Stockton, CA and a Bottle of Rum fell in Las Vegas.

Ohhhh that was one of the nights that Keith got the 3AM call.....

I miss Dennis! I will ALWAYS think of Dennis! If Dennis is in the place I go when I die I hope he is saving me a seat!

I do some things now because Dennis told me too! They seemed right at the time and they still do. Dennis seemed to have had an influence on alot of people in his time on this Earth. I hope we all make as many friends as Dennis did,

I hope as many people can say nice things about us like we all are for Dennis. I will always consider Dennis a friend and I MISS my friend! I know Life threw Dennis some curve balls,

I hope wherever he is it is better! I think I will lift a glass to my friend tonite and the next time I find a bar with his favorite beer I think I will have one to remember my friend!

Dennis used to hold long, and quite frequent Skype conversations with me last year, even after his heart trouble.

I was also privileged to meet him, when laughingboy brought both of them down here. We went for a bar meal and several pints, before returning back here for a natter.

I will miss him, and hope Jeremy can find his Obit in the Vegas papers.

I didn't know Dennis very well, but he always made me laugh.

The best way to honour his life is to keep his memory alive, share stories about the happy times and maybe some of the sad. He will live on in our hearts.

..and then there was the time he stayed with my family over here in the UK.

The plan was he would be with us for two or three days...he enjoyed himself so much..he stayed for almost two weeks.

I wished now I'd taken that picture of him trying to ride a bike...

They were great times....

Damn horrible news :-(
Rest in peace ol buddy.

When i remember my early days at SETI/BOINC...I remember Dennis...He was a big part of the fun of the whole thing on the boards...In the days before moderation it was a lot like the wild west on the SETI boards and Dennis posted some pretty wild stuff...In fact he kept on doing it till he passed away...At first i was a bit leery of Dogbytes...He seemed like a cantankerous and somewhat dangerous personality...But in a while i learned he was one of the kindest and most giving people i have ever known...RIP Dennis...You were truly one of a kind...and i will miss you always.

Dune Finkleberry
This just in on the TFFE boards from Jack Lass.... One of DB's best buddy's!

The Remains of Dog_Bytes

Because Dennis had no family, and because we weren't able to get in touch with him for several weeks, it was not until today (1/18/08) that I learned from the Las Vegas Police Department that he had died on December 21st. Because the Clark County Coroner had no way to find anyone to see to Dennis' body, he was assigned to a mortuary in town. On contacting the coroner I was given the name of the mortuary and when I called they told me they were planning to cremate him this weekend. They asked if I wanted any kind of service, and of course, knowing Dennis, I declined. However, I plan to fly to Las Vegas next week both to help the Clark County Administrator locate and inventory Dennis' self storage locker, and to pick up his ashes and bring them home with me.

This brings me to the reason I am posting this here where those of us who knew and loved him can make a decision. First, a brief prologue which I hope nobody will find offensive (though if you do, in the spirit of Dog_Bytes, tough).

Many years ago when my mother died we had her body cremated. When I brought her ashes home my wife and I decided that we didn't want to keep them in some fancy urn in the living room and so came up with the following idea. Because my mother lived in apartments all her life and because she was so thrilled that I had a house with a garden, we decided that whenever we would plant a tree or a shrub or bulbs or whatever, we would mix some of mom into the soil to help things grow. This we did and no day goes by that I can't look out of a window and remember her. When people ask me where my mother is I happily, and literally, tell them: "She's pushing up the daisies." Dennis got a big kick out of this story, and so I've decided to let Dennis, too, "push up the daisies."

The reason I've gone on at such length is the following. While there's not much left after a body is cremated, if any of you would also like some of Dog_Bytes ashes to create a small memorial I would be happy to send them to you. If you do want some (and I assure you they are sterile, and inoffensive) please let me know by email jlass (at) starpower.net or phone (1-301-656-1893).

Wishing you all a healthy, happy and prosperous 2008, I remain,

Your fellow Earian

I'm glad that he was able to find "family", though not by blood relation but by those who will cherish the memories of him. It is good to know that he made a positive impact on so many people's lives. I think that is more notable than a plaque on a building's cornerstone any day.

"We're Never Really Gone"

i won't see you this year
but i still remember
the memories won't die
they'll last forever
and if sometime
where you are
you stop and think of me
i believe i'll know it
just the way we used to be

i won't see you this year
but i won't forget you
that time in our lives
we were really together
and if by chance
you think of those old times
i hope that you remember
all the joy we used to find

we're never really gone
as long as we remember
we're never really old
as long as we remember
i see the lights
i see the sights
i think of you and me
and i smile
for times behind
and the way we used to be

"The Nature of Life"

there will be times
when some of those that we have gathered in friendship
fall away
some forever lost
some just absent for a time
but those who fall away are soon replaced by others
whom we have not yet known
the gathering
the separation
and the gathering again
do not weep
for it has always been this way
this is the nature of life

Oh Hell! That is very sad news.

Sheila and I were privileged to meet with him, when Laughingboy brought him down last summer (when it rained and flooded). We had a good bar meal, several pints of Timmy Taylors Landlord and a long chat, before they returned to the Manchester area.

He was a hell of a companion, and we spent many hours on Skype. But this fell away since his heart problems, and now I know why. This was his completing chapter.

I am sorry he has gone, and it is right he will be missed. Dennis Peters was one who knew his mind, was honest and gave politically correct fools what they deserved.

I can't even begin to describe how sad i am about this news. Dennis was one of the kindest people to post here on seti. He never held back an opinion..his straight talking was often outrageous and hilarious. He bought real life to this message board and I know we shall all miss him. I remember when he was made a mod and I thought "oh my..this will be interesting" but he took it really seriously and tried so hard to be fair do a good job. It was a proud time for him to moderate the board where he has made so many good friends. Friends who he took the trouble to meet in real life. He stayed with us for Christmas a year ago, I am not sure he got over the shock of my kids...he wasn't a kid person :D but my son was sad to hear about his death too. He said "even though he was grumpy I still really liked him" I know that he was in a lot of pain and discomfort even then. I can't say how much he will be missed. There just aren't the words.

Just to let you know, Dennis has finally been cremated.

His ashes are now with Jack Lass in Washington, which will be his final resting place.

One or two of his friends...not just in TFFE..but those he met on his travels or through the projects he crunched for have expressed a wish for some of his ashes as a remembrance to plant a tree or shrub in his name.

I hope no one is offended by this idea, knowing Dennis...he'd be having a damn good chuckle..

To quote Jack:
"I know that Dennis cared very deeply about our team and about the many members whom he met or with whom he conversed on the boards or by Email. I think that "spreading" him around the world will be a fitting tribute to someone who lived at one time or another on every continent but Antarctica. So do think about this and let me know soon. There won't be a lot of ashes --we don't turn into much when we're gone-- but a little can go a long way when planting new life."
So if anyone would like to remember Dennis in this way please send me a PM.

Cheers,

Keith

This is a clumsy bump. I am waiting by the mailbox. Patiently.
Dune, thank you for the clumsy 'Bump'. I met Dennis many times here. I met him twice in the flesh with Hev and Es at the secret drinking holes in London. A more genuine and friendly spirit would be hard to find. I count myself privileged and lucky to have met him in person. He will be missed here, genuinely and sadly. We who are left are the poorer for his passing. I will never forget you my friend. Never.

In time this thread will pass, but the memories will still be there.

Now is not the time for the thread to pass. I've never met DB in person, but his gruff no nonsense way he approached life will forever stay with me. He died too soon, & left many friends to wonder "what if".

I'm just glad he took the time to know me, even if I was sometimes nonchalant about it. Thanks for being there.

RIP Dennis. You helped me out years ago, and we exchanged a few emails.

I'm very saddened to come back after being away from Seti to find that you've gone.

Won't forget you.

:(

I'll miss you DB,

But we'll see each other again in a time.

You've done a really nice job there Siran. Dennis would be touched I think.

Greetings,

Thanks Es. I should have done it long ago, but I feel it would have been an ongoing project back then. As it is now, it is more complete. I have many things now taking my time up. But, at least I finally got to it. Thanks again.

Siran

Many thanks for the dedication to Dennis, I appreciated it very much. Dennis would have approved and had a good laugh at the thought of all the people he gave a poke to and a laugh with.

Thanks Crunchy for translating it and allowing us to read the same dedication.

John

I did not know him.
But, so many here remember him so dearly, I shall raise a toast to his memory.

Glug.

I wish I didn't have to work when Dog came up to Reno Nevada while doing a trip, but I had to work. Sure do miss him.

He called me on landline just one day before he passed away.
Things you will never forget.

He was a very nice guy.

Cheers Dennis.
