[quote]One word about the woodwork you've done, Richard: WOW!!!

Ditto to that Dr C. I love to see the work
that can be wrought in natural material.
Have you seen any of Andy Goldsworthy's work?

In Andy Goldsworthy's hands, a twig, a rock, even a yellowing leaf is transformed into a beautiful work of art

No Probs, good Dr., it's good to see someone pushing aesthetics again.
I saw a Goldsworthy exhibition in Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens in 1990- it blew me away.

. . . and here's something a bit different for folks to possiblibly pay attention to:

Copyrighted ATADA -'Sitting Bull's Pants' 2008

American Indian Items stolen from a Jackson Hole, WY Home, Spring, 2005 . . . amongst the Stolen objects - Sitting Bull's Pants see above

A Jackson Hole, WY home experienced a theft in Spring, 2005.

The stolen items include a Hopi Katchina, a Klagetoh rug, a Red Mesa rug, a Sioux roach, a pair of leather pants said to have been worn by Chief Sitting Bull,

a pipe bag said to have been used by Chief Sitting Bull, and two Socorro Ollas.

It is possible that a prominent Santa Fe trader, not an ATADA member, sold some of these items before he died.

Sadly, around here they will nick anything that isn't bolted down and if they can't nick it they vandalise it :( Our Council spends a hell of a lot of £s putting up artistic sculptures and as quick as they put them up someone else will wreck them (just one of the many reasons I'd move away from the UK if I could).

. . . here's more on Art Theft that might interest you (OR at least some of You)

Police guard the recovered paintings by Picasso and Portinari. Photograph: Sebastio Moreira/EPA

. . . this new art crime blog will address questions about art crime

If only recovering stolen art was always this simple. The police in Brazil, as is the norm, have gone to huge efforts to locate these paintings, largely because of the high-profile nature of the theft. Together the works have been valued at nearly £30m, and the artists concerned are big names - Portinari is one of Brazil's most important and influential artists, while Picasso needs no introduction.

A general observation is that the more prominent the theft, the greater the likelihood is of recovering the artwork in the near future. This trend results from, for example, the rigorous police investigations that will follow, combined with the impossibility of selling the item for anything near its real value, and certainly not on the open market. Statistics suggest that almost a quarter of artworks recovered are identified within a year of their original theft, while more than half are identified within four years. Nevertheless, those are the lucky ones - the Art Loss Register has more than 165,000 artworks listed as still missing. Not all of these have been torn from museum walls - the typical item will be a painting stolen in a domestic burglary, worth a couple of thousand pounds. Having said that, more than 500 other stolen Picasso artworks are still believed to be doing the rounds.

. . . again - an Art Piece Stolen: (see quote below) Date - April 26, 2007

On April 26, 2007 via UPS we sent a San Diego city resident a very important artwork with a value of $25,000.00.

I have enclosed a picture of the item in question and its description.

Unfortunately the UPS driver instead of delivering it to the individual who had agreed to purchase it chose

to simply leave it in front of the house, from where it was promptly stolen.

We did not realize this theft had occurred until this past Thursday when I called the client and inquired

why we had not received payment for our invoice which was enclosed in package. He was somewhat

shocked and said he had never received a package from us.

. . . We immediately contacted UPS who did a trace of the shipment and told us they had simply left it in front of the house without a signature

. . . Thanks (re: the Wood Carving Tools)

< guess UPS is the same everywhere - where i live - they always leave packages on the front of the house - even when a signature's required (morons)

- i have the main station on a perpetual 'will-call' - i get the packages myself from the station and sign for them there . . . better than losing something that's been left @ the front of the house . . . DOH!

A London art collection has acquired several artworks produced by orangutans in the Krefeld Zoo. Like the city of Krefeld told on Monday, the British paid for 22 works of the project "affenBRUT ' a total of 3,200 euros.

The proceeds go to two-thirds to the zoo and will be used for the financing the new Gorilla Garden.

The first time, around two years ago, the orang-utan-Ladies Sita, Tilda and Sandra demonstrated their artistic creativity during an therapy.

The artists:

I, myself find that really interesting. If you look at the pictures done by the apes and compare that one to the one you posted below that...

It's very interesting... now what defines those as art ?
What's the definition of art and what makes the 'human' art different from what an ape can do ? Especially considering those 'modern' arts of drawing pics...

This is fascinating...

. . . Crunch3r - you do realize that work (below) is a 'messo relievo' - meaning it's dimensional - the body actually stands out from the work and it's also larger than life ;)

> Thanks for the compliment - maybe the Museuam's will look more closely at my works and acquire some eh ;)

Note: my work (above) has been Collected by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

my post was about the pic below.

So what makes it so different from the 'ape art' if you take both as modern art ?

Again what defines 'art' ? Just a personal view that it's 'art' now ?
(if you do look at like davincis mona lisa wich we all agree is 'art'... so who defines what is 'art' and what's just some 'messing around with paint'...)
