No, it just sometimes seems that if I complain, things get fixed and my complaint is moot.......but Scarecrow's site is still dead in the water......

EDIT......And I am a stubborn German too........

Anybody else use an IBM 42H1292? I buy them on ebay because I have to have the 'clicky' keyboard.....cannot stand the 'soft serve' ones......
I have one or two in reserve...

Scarecrow seems to be back - but the update times are a bit "behind the times".

Dear goodness... Is that with the big ole coiled cord and a AT connector?

I haven't used one of those in years and probably couldn't stand it... I don't have to look at the keyboard when I type and I'm fairly good at catching spelling mistakes...

This is a pic of the type of keyboard I currently use:

The 42H1292 is the 'buckling spring' keyboard aka 'clicky' keyboard.
Here is a website devoted to it....
Clicky.....
At one time, the original IBM versions were selling for 100's of dollars in Japan, before IBM sold the works to Lexmark......and then it went to Unicomp. These babies weigh a couple of pounds. Now THAT is a keyboard.

You could actually put these babies into a dishwasher (not recommended) and they would survive the wash. I personally have had a couple of them survive a whiskey and soda wash after which I dunked them in the tub and after a couple of weeks of drying out...they still survived.

The main thing though, is the feel......the click. Clumsy fingers like mine have a hard time getting tactile feedback (duh, did I hit that key or not?) from the soft touch boards in general use today....gotta have that click.

I still have three old Selectric type keyboards that have the correct plug for modern mobos. And two short ones (no numeric keypad) that fit inside a regular bag.

I still look for them at hamfests. They go for two or three dollars each. I just have to make sure they don't have the old DIN plugs.

You may want to try the IBM model KB 8923 (FRU 07H0666) as a substitute. The one I am using now dates to 1996-12.

OMG....you know what a hamfest is???
Now that's really a hoot.
I have gone to a number of them since the 90's with a buddy of mine....
Never know what you might find there.......although I have found in the recent years they have become more commercialized and less ham-oriented.
I remember many years ago when there were folks from around the world with satellite phones in their hands bidding on a little electronic trinket that they thought would be of some value in their home world......
The biggest one in the world is said to be in Dayton, Ohio, USA, and I have been there many times.

I do -- and have several "new old stock" keyboards stored away.

What I'm wondering (and simply haven't tried) is what does it take to hook one to a USB port? I suspect that most USB/PS2 keyboards are somehow "USB-aware" but I'm not at all sure.

Brian,

You aren't supposed to look at the keyboard -- this is all about feel.

When you push a key, it takes a certain amount of effort -- not a lot, but some. At the same time that the contact "makes" the key gets easier and you hear the characteristic "click" sound.

There are those that argue that the 84 key, with the function keys on the left is the best layout ever, but it's really the 102 key layout, with no goofy "windoze" key that is the de-facto standard.

... and eBay is your friend.

-- Ned

Note to Mark: I'm sure a lot of us go to hamfests, but we probably don't go for the computer bits. A surprizing number of "names" here in the fora are actually callsigns.

If At-->PS2-->USB adaptors don't float your boat, then you probably don't wanna know... but if you did there's a "consortium" to help you design one ....

Oh crap....the last couple of mobos I got didn't even have PS2 ports on 'em. Had to resort to USB adapter thingys......one worked like s**t, the other seems to work OK. It's a bi**h keeping up with technology........
And you gotta render your speech 'kid friendly' on the boards instead of speaking your mind.......but that's a good thing....until your mouse craps out......

Well, I'm not leaning toward designing one, I left that part of the industry when the Burroughs A3 mainframe went into production. Pretty amazing little box: smaller than a normal office desk, and 6 megabytes of RAM (48 bit words).

It just seems to me that most of the "USB keyboard adapters" are just wires, and it probably needs a tiny bit of logic if the keyboard is "too old."

I wish these things were still made, the garbage they produce now is like trying to type on a wet sponge.

OK. Here's the thing. I type somewhere around 55-60 wpm, with a fairly high degree of accuracy. I don't need the "assurance" that I hit a key hard enough or that I hit the right key, I either know that I hit the right key by just being confident or that I can see the screen as I'm typing and realize that I was successful or made a boo-boo... I also do not "pound" the keyboard either.

Anyway, I've used them before, and just don't like them. To each their own...

lol my keyboard is a not for peck typers keyboard!!!
It's a Das Keyboard II
Yeep the one that's totaly blank :)

Confuses the heck out of peeps that use my computer.
But heh once you get used to it your typing speed sure gets faster :)

And boy does it annoy people.
It does "click" when you type, but it has 3 different types of click.
Light makes it go "clicky", medium makes it go "click", hard makes it go "clunk"
So you can actualy play a tune while typing. :P
