I do not understand the relevance to the computing in Boinc.

Donations are supposed to be voluntary and not included as part of the software licensing that is used to configure Boinc.

If you want a donation do it right and just ask for it not planting it in Boinc's sub structure.

I know I will most likely flamed for having the temerity to speak out but I will anyway.

This is only seen in the Optimized Boinc checked it out by reloading original Boinc the optimized again.

You will have to make yourself clearer. Boinc doesn't make an optimized manager. There is no need to since it is only a supervisory program that handle the GUI and facilitates communication. It therefore uses only a very small percentage of the CPU cycle.

If you're referring to a third party manager, I suggest you take your objections to that source.

BTW This is the Seti project. Seti is open source and also not reponsible for third party optimized client.

Although Seti use Boinc and it's developers have a close association with Boinc, Boinc is an independent project with its own web site and separate financing.

Look we all are aware of who made the optimized Boinc. Have a little common sense and address the question for what it is, A polite way with out naming names for a comment on the party who made the optimized version and his ethics. As well as asking the others who use the program for their opinions and views on doing soliciting in the Optimized Boinc program.

As well as informational because many may not of had this feature pop up in theirs as of yet.

Have you tried emailing or PMing this person to tell them how you feel? You call this a 'polite' way without naming names, but you also state that everyone knows who it is. I'd call that a public name and shame, and if I were the other person, I'd be pretty upset at such a public display without at least trying to resolve it with me first. Ask yourself if you were on the other end, is this how you'd want someone to 'politely' resolve an issue?

Personally, since he's free to modify the source code any way he sees fit, I think it's his right to add in there whatever he wants. If others don't like it, it's their choice not to use the software or ignore it. I don't really see the big problem, nor would I even call it an 'ethics' issue, unless we have a different definition of the term "ethics".

I have NOT seen any popup windows anywhere on any of my machines from Boinc/Seti.

If the popup is concerning requests for donations to Boinc/Seti then I have no problems with that. Everyone here knows they need funds as well as hardware.

If the popup is requesting donations to the software modifier/compiler/supplier then asking for a small donation is ok here also. Most people expect to be awarded for their efforts and why not here too? Costs money to purchase compilers and maintain the license for them.

Hank, you've been around your master's site long enough that you should know you can't use images hosted on his site anywhere else on the web. This is the image Hank wanted to show everyone:

So, is that a feature of the optimized BOINC client you are running? If you don't like it, don't run it. I haven't seen it anywhere, nor do I feel it is something to get upset about, nor does anyone on Team Starfire as far as I can tell.

We would however like to know more details of this feature.

HFB1217........

Looking at the returned results from your quad computer. I am running the exact same Boinc and Application software you are. I only see the normal work unit name. Nothing else.

I'm using both Boinc 6.1.0 and the SSSE3 (no gfx) App from Crunch3r on my quad.

Are we talking about a special client that somebody at Team Starfire has compiled?

Just use BoincView, that's what I use and I never see any of that stuff. Plus you can control what columns you do see, so you can just not display the name if you don't want to see it...

HFB1217

I used every available optimizer since Feb. 2007, and I`ve never seen anything
like this on my BOINC/SETI sites.
I donate to S@H via Berkely University, and ONLY to S@H, because I love this project, and no one else ( third parties ) ever asked me for a donation.

Regards
Kurt

Thank you for showing what "this" means in the thread title, I was really puzzled.

I would give high odds it's not a feature, rather a bug. A sched_reply_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml file contains information for 7 buttons to be placed on the Projects tab when this project is selected, the last one has the name "Donate" and I think that text is getting misplaced. The 6.1.0 code was very pre-alpha, clients built from it were not even released to the BOINC-Alpha test group.
                                                                  Joe

Heck, I don't even run 6.1 and that's what it looks like to me too. The way the original post makes it seem is far different. From that I got this vision of a new button or a new area that had either "Donate to SETI" or "Donate to me" (not sure which because of the ambiguity of the original post).

For reference, I have pressed the red-X on the original post. Apparently either the modlist hasn't considered it yet or they have and have not considered this as something to take down. That's fine, so long as we don't get into similar drama as the last time... Those of you around long enough will know what I mean, for others, never mind ;-)

On my laptop, the optimized Boinc has started to show something other than the workunit name.

It's not showing "donate" but it shows "your team".

I was running the BOINC 6.1.0 V3 since Nov 30 until this week and I never find nothing like that... (a few days ago I switched to 5.10.28 becouse Fred W. is getting stats from my results to compare 'with or without' the affinity feature)

Best regards and happy new year...!

It only just started today.
And it's not just with Seti.
On Seti it shows "Your Team" and on CPDN it shows "Team".
but with CPDN it freeked out (boinc kept crashing).
Even after I went back to 5.10.30 :(
So I had to abort those CPDN units.

Got to admit with all the problems with SETI, TSP and now CPDN, I'm getting a bit bored with boinc *sigh*
Prehaps I should take a break....

Like Joe was suggested, I think that is only a little bug with the pointers to the literal arrays of the buttons... (Sorry, my C is from too years ago... And I dont work with it since 1992... But I remember what happens when someone put an '&'when really want to put another thing in the code... (like '*', or nothing, or an index after the array [xxx] for example ))

:)
