Follow up on the clean install hack...

After two months of restarts and no completed results my machine is completing two work units every 2-1/2 hours.

The key is eliminating the BOINC/SETI screen saver from your installation.

Not so fast...

When I clean-installed BOINC as a SERVICE it downloaded 8 work units. Everything appeared to be running as it should. SETI ran through the first four work units in record time.

Then I checked the system this morning. Everything had slowed down. One additional work unit was completed and uploaded over night ... leaving 3. When I checked the message log I found restarts.

Everything appeared to be running well until the number of work units reached 3 ... and no additional work units have been downloaded.

One of the work units (ending in 190_0) is 70% done and estimated to complete in 6 hours. The second active work unit is approximately 3% done with completion estimated in 24 hours.

When the clean installation was first started, it only took 2 hours to complete two work units.

This looks like a memory/buffer overrun. The longer BOINC/SETI runs, the more it slows down under increasing memory demands until it exceeds a limit and resets.

I reset all the default preferences (on the SETI site) and updated the work units.

Here's the current message stream...

14/12/2007 00:36:10||Reading preferences override file

First thing you should do is clear the preferences override file, then your settings will be read from this Seti internet site or in your case from World Community Grid.

Choose menu option Advanced, Preferences and click the clear button.

Stop and restart Boinc so that the web site settings are read into Boinc.

Check for system restarts.

I may have found the solution for my machine.

It appears that the BOINC/SETI software doesn't manage dual processing very well. I continued having problems after eliminating the screen saver, ripping out BOINC/SETI completely from my machine. (Down to manually deleting registry entries.) Reloading as a service. Resetting all preferences to the defaults ... allowing full system access and then adding restrictions (disallowing swap to disk, pausing while active, etc.)

None of the the tweaks worked.

Two days ago I set the max number of CPUs used to one and BINGO! Work units are completing once again.

Here is my most recent machine settings from the BOINC login after a reboot..

I seriously question this diagnosis of the problem. If it were true that Boinc/Seti has problems when more than one process is running then there would be literally thousands of users complaining about it.

Have you tried a new installation of Windows? Format and reinstall??

Add me to the list. I run SETI and World Community Grid (no problem) and SETI keep restarting. Swedish Win XP and BOINC 5.10.28.

The resetting problem continues. Forcing BOINC/SETI to use a single processor simply delayed the restarts.

Since this problem appears to be such a low priority and has gone on for so long, I will assume that the SETI staff simply doesn't care to have my computers participate in their study.

I am going to remove the package from my systems.

Goodbye.

Since my initial difficulties, I have cleared WUs, detatched from S@H, removed all (well, all that I could see) traces of the s/w and re-installed S@H. This worked for me. However, there is something I have noticed. I also use my PC for various work related tasks and often need to access the Works Servers for reference, and I've found that IE, has still been running at 50% CPU resources, after, I have got the info I needed, logged out and closed the IE 'window'! I only became aware of this after I started getting into the habit of suspending all, but one of the S@H WUs, when working on things from work etc and then resuming the suspended WUs, when I'd finished. On dozens of occasions, I've resumed WUs, looked at the progress over a couple of mins and found it had virtually ground to a halt. I've brought up Windows Task Manager and found that IE was the culprit every time.

There may be a problem with the S@H screen-saver, but in my case, this has only manifested itself, when I've gone to bed, left the PC running and forgotten to resume suspended WUs, which has, on all occasions, resulted in a WU being in essence completed (usually 99.992% on the screen-saver), but with the 'saver' locked as you might expect, as well as the PC, which you would not expect. Apart from that, plus a WU which did not progress beyond a certain point after 40 mins (then aborted) and a 'Computation Error', things seem to be running much more reliably.

I don't agree, that SaH doesnot handle dual or quad-processing, well.[Maybe it depends on the used version off BOINC ?]I use 5.10.28 now.
I started again with crunching numbers on 2 DUAL-CORE PENTIUM/CELERON-M and on 1 QUAD-CORE [Q6600], on december 17 2007. Apart from 1 error, becauce I had a, not well tested prog. that gives the temp. off the Quad-Core CPU. There were NO errors on any off the 3 P.C.'s.
One P.C. , the 'oldest', a Dual-Core P 820; 2,6 GHz, with 4 GiG off RAM[DDR2], wich only 'sees 3,4GB off RAM [also the BIOS!] WINDOWS XP SP2 [HOME], works OK.
Made NO errors, since the 17th december 2007.
Here my PC's:
4070955 PC_van_Frederic 1,210.34 25,212 GenuineIntel ,2GiG DDR2.
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 7] Microsoft Windows Vista

Home Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 31 6 Jan 2008 20:46:03 UTC
P.C. were non stop 'crunching', from December 17, 2007.
I use manually override from my PC's, not my account.
Hope to help, Fred J. Verster ; Fredericx51.
