I may have found the solution for my machine. I don't agree, that SaH doesnot handle dual or quad-processing, well.[Maybe it depends on the used version off BOINC ?]I use 5.10.28 now. I started again with crunching numbers on 2 DUAL-CORE PENTIUM/CELERON-M and on 1 QUAD-CORE [Q6600], on december 17 2007. Apart from 1 error, becauce I had a, not well tested prog. that gives the temp. off the Quad-Core CPU. There were NO errors on any off the 3 P.C.'s. One P.C. , the 'oldest', a Dual-Core P 820; 2,6 GHz, with 4 GiG off RAM[DDR2], wich only 'sees 3,4GB off RAM [also the BIOS!] WINDOWS XP SP2 [HOME], works OK. Made NO errors, since the 17th december 2007. Here my PC's: 4070955 PC_van_Frederic 1,210.34 25,212 GenuineIntel ,2GiG DDR2. I use manually override from my PC's, not my account. Hope to help, Fred J. Verster ; Fredericx51. |

Since my initial difficulties, I have cleared WUs, detatched from S@H, removed all (well, all that I could see) traces of the s/w and re-installed S@H. This worked for me. However, there is something I have noticed. I also use my PC for various work related tasks and often need to access the Works Servers for reference, and I've found that IE, has still been running at 50% CPU resources, after, I have got the info I needed, logged out and closed the IE 'window'! I only became aware of this after I started getting into the habit of suspending all, but one of the S@H WUs, when working on things from work etc and then resuming the suspended WUs, when I'd finished. On dozens of occasions, I've resumed WUs, looked at the progress over a couple of mins and found it had virtually ground to a halt. I've brought up Windows Task Manager and found that IE was the culprit every time. There may be a problem with the S@H screen-saver, but in my case, this has only manifested itself, when I've gone to bed, left the PC running and forgotten to resume suspended WUs, which has, on all occasions, resulted in a WU being in essence completed (usually 99.992% on the screen-saver), but with the 'saver' locked as you might expect, as well as the PC, which you would not expect. Apart from that, plus a WU which did not progress beyond a certain point after 40 mins (then aborted) and a 'Computation Error', things seem to be running much more reliably. |

The resetting problem continues. Forcing BOINC/SETI to use a single processor simply delayed the restarts. Since this problem appears to be such a low priority and has gone on for so long, I will assume that the SETI staff simply doesn't care to have my computers participate in their study. I am going to remove the package from my systems. Goodbye. Mike Carlson Let go or get dragged |

I may have found the solution for my machine. I seriously question this diagnosis of the problem. If it were true that Boinc/Seti has problems when more than one process is running then there would be literally thousands of users complaining about it. Have you tried a new installation of Windows? Format and reinstall?? |

I may have found the solution for my machine. It appears that the BOINC/SETI software doesn't manage dual processing very well. I continued having problems after eliminating the screen saver, ripping out BOINC/SETI completely from my machine. (Down to manually deleting registry entries.) Reloading as a service. Resetting all preferences to the defaults ... allowing full system access and then adding restrictions (disallowing swap to disk, pausing while active, etc.) None of the the tweaks worked. Two days ago I set the max number of CPUs used to one and BINGO! Work units are completing once again. Here is my most recent machine settings from the BOINC login after a reboot.. 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Starting BOINC client version 5.10.28 for windows_intelx86 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Libraries: libcurl/7.17.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Executing as a daemon 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Data directory: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||BOINC is running as a service and as a non-system user. 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||No application graphics will be available. 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9] 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Home Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Memory: 1.23 GB physical, 2.33 GB virtual 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Disk: 76.33 GB total, 23.39 GB free 12/30/2007 9:20:08 AM||Local time is UTC -7 hours 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM|SETI@home|URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 4039881; location: home; project prefs: default 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM||General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 12-Dec-2007 09:11:42) 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM||Host location: home 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM||General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM||Reading preferences override file 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 315.68MB 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 1136.46MB 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM||Preferences limit disk usage to 18.63GB 12/30/2007 9:20:09 AM|SETI@home|Restarting task 31dc06ab.27632.24904.13.6.5_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 527 Mike Carlson Let go or get dragged |

14/12/2007 00:36:10||Reading preferences override file First thing you should do is clear the preferences override file, then your settings will be read from this Seti internet site or in your case from World Community Grid. Choose menu option Advanced, Preferences and click the clear button. Stop and restart Boinc so that the web site settings are read into Boinc. Check for system restarts. |

Not so fast... When I clean-installed BOINC as a SERVICE it downloaded 8 work units. Everything appeared to be running as it should. SETI ran through the first four work units in record time. Then I checked the system this morning. Everything had slowed down. One additional work unit was completed and uploaded over night ... leaving 3. When I checked the message log I found restarts. Everything appeared to be running well until the number of work units reached 3 ... and no additional work units have been downloaded. One of the work units (ending in 190_0) is 70% done and estimated to complete in 6 hours. The second active work unit is approximately 3% done with completion estimated in 24 hours. When the clean installation was first started, it only took 2 hours to complete two work units. This looks like a memory/buffer overrun. The longer BOINC/SETI runs, the more it slows down under increasing memory demands until it exceeds a limit and resets. I reset all the default preferences (on the SETI site) and updated the work units. Here's the current message stream... 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Starting BOINC client version 5.10.28 for windows_intelx86 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Libraries: libcurl/7.17.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Executing as a daemon 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Data directory: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||BOINC is running as a service and as a non-system user. 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||No application graphics will be available. 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9] 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Home Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Memory: 1.23 GB physical, 2.33 GB virtual 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Disk: 76.33 GB total, 29.94 GB free 12/9/2007 3:26:10 PM||Local time is UTC -7 hours 12/9/2007 3:26:11 PM||No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 12/9/2007 3:26:11 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 631.37MB 12/9/2007 3:26:11 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 1136.46MB 12/9/2007 3:26:11 PM||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB 12/9/2007 3:26:11 PM||This computer is not attached to any projects 12/9/2007 3:26:11 PM||Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions 12/9/2007 3:26:25 PM||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php 12/9/2007 3:27:03 PM||Running CPU benchmarks 12/9/2007 3:27:03 PM||Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks 12/9/2007 3:27:11 PM|SETI@home|Master file download succeeded 12/9/2007 3:27:16 PM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Project initialization. Follow up on the clean install hack... After two months of restarts and no completed results my machine is completing two work units every 2-1/2 hours. The key is eliminating the BOINC/SETI screen saver from your installation. Mike Carlson Let go or get dragged |

There must be a glitch in the BOINC/SETI code that causes restarts when the BOINC/SETI screen saver is NOT used. I wonder if we can duplicate this with a variety of machines, just so we can be certain. |

Hack solution found... I'm sorry that we couldn't help you find a less drastic solution. But it's great that you are up and running again. Happy crunching (from now on - we hope). F.

Hack solution found... I trashed everything BOINC related on my machine. Rebooted. Reinstalled a clean version of BOINC as a SERVICE INSTALLATION. (Screen saver is disabled in the service installation.) There must be a glitch in the BOINC/SETI code that causes restarts when the BOINC/SETI screen saver is NOT used. @ Mike Problem ocntinues. Have tried playing with PREFERENCES to no avail. Have RESET multiple times to no avail. Have loaded an OPTIMIZED SETI, RESET, SHUTDOWN & REBOOTED and here's the latest message stream... Where did you change the settings. On the Seti website or on your host. If you used the website these changes will not work until you remove the override file on your host.
Chose menu option Advanced,Preferences and click the clear button.

ok adding to this, if the screen saver is BOINC it doesn't cause a restart, however when it goes from BOINC to blank screen it does cause another reset, so it's the blank screen that is causing this it seems. Doesn't explain the resets caused with no saver/blank screen involvement, but it may point in a direction. However it looks like checking this out caused an unrecoverable error 10/12/2007 19:21:21|SETI@home|Restarting task 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 527 10/12/2007 20:08:28|SETI@home|Restarting task 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 527 10/12/2007 20:31:59|SETI@home|Restarting task 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 527 10/12/2007 20:44:11|SETI@home|Restarting task 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 527 10/12/2007 21:08:41|SETI@home|Restarting task 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 527 10/12/2007 21:15:25|World Community Grid|Resuming task X0000051290019200507152346_0 using hcc1 version 515 10/12/2007 21:15:35|SETI@home|Deferring communication for 1 min 0 sec 10/12/2007 21:15:35|SETI@home|Reason: Unrecoverable error for result 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0 ( - exit code 1073807364 (0x40010004)) 10/12/2007 21:15:35|SETI@home|Computation for task 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0 finished 10/12/2007 21:15:37|SETI@home|[file_xfer] Started upload of file 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0_0 10/12/2007 21:15:45|SETI@home|[file_xfer] Finished upload of file 02ja07ab.23284.13156.3.6.70_0_0 10/12/2007 21:15:45|SETI@home|[file_xfer] Throughput 11139 bytes/sec |

I think you may have hit on something with the screen saver option. I don't use the boinc screensaver either for any of my WU's, in fact I just go to a blank screen, but I just changed the time on my blank screen option to test and every time it went to blank screen seti restarted. However I know it also restarts when I'm working so therefore no screen saver so it can't be the whole answer, still it's got to be related. |

The restarts continue. I have reviewed the SYSTEM EVENT LOG for possible culprits near the time of the last spontaneous SETI task restart. Here are the possible culprits... Universal PNP ... I have this disabled on my system for the obvious reasons. Screen Saver ... I do NOT use the SETI screen saver. This last one is a prime suspect ... I have had problems with the SETI screen saver before which were solve by completely removing SETI in its entirety ... manually deleting all files and registry entries. This hack (not solution) hasn't worked on the restart problem. Mike Carlson Let go or get dragged |
