There are several possible fixes for the fan noise.

1) Set your CPU fraction to something less than 100% - typically 80% to 90% is sufficient to allow the fan to slow down.

2) Set the allowed number of CPUs to be 1 instead of the default (which is, I believe, 2).

The first one can, I believe, be set so that it runs with different CPU fractions at different times (allowing you to run full bore while everyone is awake, and slower when people are sleeping).

Both settings can be found this web site -> your account -> general settings. If the version of BOINC is new enough, they can also be found in the settings available under the advanced view.

It gives you two workunits (tasks) to keep both CPUs busy.

If you'd like, you can specify in your preferences to only use 1 CPU, or you can throttle your CPU usage of both cores back to something less than 100%.

To use 1 CPU, go to Account -> General Preferences -> On multiprocessors, use at most X (change X to 1). Save your new preferences. The next time your computer contacts the servers, it will download the new preferences (so they will not take effect right away).

Or, if you want to use less than 100%, go to Account -> General Preferences -> Use at most X percent of CPU time (change X to something less that will create less noise, like maybe 75% or 50% - you'll have to experiment to see what works best for the noise in your environment). Save the preferences and the next time your computer contacts the servers, it will download your newer preferences.

I just got a new computer and I am running seti on it,I was also running it on my old computer. But now seti is giving me 2 tasks for computing at the same time.Under messages it also says I have 2 CPU'S.I only want to run 1 task because my roomate sleeps in the livingroom and he says the fan on the computer is to loud.So I have had it shut down for a while now.How can I get it to just send me 1 task? Do I need to boot up my old computer and pull up BOINC then detach the project?
