Hmmm. Reminds me of that museum that has the hatchet that George Washington used to cut down the Cherry Tree. Seems the blade has been replaced twice and the handle three times, but it's really the one he used to cut the tree down!! ;)

LOL...well it did still have the original case, floppy drive, graphics board and hard drive (as storage). Gotta count for something...

Thanks for the info. I ended up being able to get things running long enough to abort the WUs. It's the whole computer that is dying, not just the hard drive. Power Supply, CPU...etc, it's the oldest computer in my collection. Been with me since Windows 98. Upgraded too many times to count. Time to put it to rest...

One of my computers died a painful death the other day. Hard Drive fried. I have two outstanding WUs that don't expire until Dec. Is there a way to abort them so that someone else can process them?

I can't test this, and it may not work because of other authentication/signatures that were specific to the old machine.

{
Install boinc on new machine. Do not start!
Stop boinc on working machine.
}
or
{
Stop boinc on working machine.
copy all boinc dir to a boinc2 dir somewhere else.
}

Copy all xml files in boinc dir of working machine to either new machine's boinc dir or the new boinc2 dir on working machine.

For each of these files in new boinc dir:
client_state.xml
client_state_prev.xml
sched_request_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml
{
Search for <hostid>1108070</hostid>
replace with <hostid>3828132</hostid>
}

Start boinc on new machine or in boinc2 dir.

Pray.

If boinc is clever, it'll ignore the wu's already assigned to the working machine and redownload the stuck workunits and continue.
If running on new machine, then you're done.
If running in boinc2 dir, and it successfully thinks it is the deceased machine, then detach, stop and delete boinc2 dir.

Of course, if everyone backed up all their hosts' configurations, or if boinc stored them online for rehoming then it would be lot easier.

Let us know how you get on.
