She's too, let's say, ambitious. And when Hillary talks, even chimpanzees know she's lying.

Anne Bonny (c. Born on 1700-1705 Died on April 25, 1782) was an Irish pirate who plied her trade in the Caribbean.

Some of her story at Wikipedia

I loved Anne of the Indies, the movie that was loosely based on her.

A list of female pirates.

Aargh!

When you used to learn history at school

ouch...

I am sure you got the impression from the history texts that women often did very little of importance. Much the same way it was often thought that there were no women artists...or scientists. It is not because these women weren't out there doing things..it is because they just didn't get recognised for it.

Actually you'd be quite wrong, you need to remember my age group. I missed my 11+ but did pass my 13+, therefore, being in the upper stream, my schooling was pretty near to Grammar. We WERE taught about womens achievements, which MAYBE the secondary education streams were not. Off the top of my head......

Elizabeth Fry - prison reformer
Madame Curie - Radium
Florence Nightingale - Crimea nursing
Bodicea - Iceni tribe leader
Elizabeth the 1st - British queen
Emily Pankhurst - Suffragettes
Joan of Arc - 100 years war
Marie Antoinette - let them eat cake????

And loads more.....

People will probably disagree with this comment, but anyone under 40 probably did not have a balanced education in this respect. Those of us who were schooled in the 50's and 60's did.

That is what this thread is about. After all..(written) history is full of men's achievements. It's just nice to hear what the gals have been up to too.

Quite right too, and they got up to a lot.

You can't change 10,000 years of entrenched attitudes overnight.

Bravo for trying though, and you have my full support. Just a shame that you have mavericks like that Greer woman.

I do think Hillary could be a good president.

As an individual, maybe. But is it right that she is able to [ahem - one assumes] have pillow talk with an ex president. I'm not saying that's an unfair advantage, but it just doesn't seem right to me....

Ok, I was being mischievous there, I knew exactly what you would say!

Off on a tangent a little bit. D'ya want to see Camilla as Queen?

Reason I ask is, is this thread about women being, or not being, in positions of power and influence, because of their gender, or whether the woman in question is suited to the job?

I would be very happy to see a female president of the united states. Condo might yet be one.....

Condo!!! That monster?!!

OK, with you there, but what I of course meant was, in principle.

The problem here with Hilary is that she is also the wife of an ex male president, and one that didn't exactly distinguish himself in office either.

Ahh..another case of a woman being held responsible for the actions of her husband.

Not at all, and you know I didn't mean it that way!

Rather incestuous wouldn't you think?

You mean like having a president who is the son of a former president and got into power because his brother rigged the vote in his state?

Yes, exactly.

D'ya want to see Cherie Blair as PM? (dont answer that)

Yeah..I think she would actually make a very good PM.

Personally, she couldn't be any worse than what we have. But that's not saying much is it?

She seems a tad hawkish to me....

Geena Davis played a role on television as the first female U.S. president. The show didn't last one season. If that is any indication about public sentiment . . .

There must be at leats one woman who could be the greatest leader in the USA. Here some world female leaders;

  • Hatshepsut - who brought years of peace and prosperity in Egypt during her reign as Pharaoh, the top "male" position in her country.

  • Elizabeth Cody Stanton - who worked towards a goal of suffrage for women and for acceptance of the Women's Property Act (the right to do business, sign contracts and so on without a man's permission).

  • Mary Ann Shad Cary - a committed teacher and feminist who was the first black woman to edit a newspaper.

  • Emily Murphy - who became the first female judge in the British Empire and fought for the right of Canadian women to be considered persons under the law.

  • Thérèse Casgrain - who led the CCF party and was an activist for better social conditions, world peace, and the eradication of poverty.

  • Golda Meir - who held many political offices and eventually became the first female prime minister of Israel.

  • Rosa Parks - who was arrested for not giving up her bus seat to a white person and who subsequently became known as the "mother of American civil rights."

  • Wangari Maathai - a Kenyan environmentalist and politician who spearheaded the Green Belt Movement of reforestation and sustainable development.

  • Aung San Suu Kyi - who led a democratic movement in Burma in an attempt to stop that government's military violence.

  • Roberta Jamieson - the first Canadian native woman to obtain a law degree and whose skills of negotiation and mediation led her to the position of Ontario Ombudsman and later to the position as first woman chief of her First Nations community.

Worldwide girls' enrollment to university/institutions got higher than boys in the last decade. That means we might experiencing interesting bio-time cycle change... (and boys and maybe many fathers getting attracted to all kinds of computer games a sign of neural shrinkage...)

Eh Esme' - you might like to check this out . . .

. . . exercisING undue authority

The uses of "a well modulated meow"

Freedom of expression and independent journalism are among the pillars of a democracy.

The scope for freedom of speech determines the public area for democratic exchange. “This public information space ...

is still the vitally important as it provides the life force for, but may also set the limits of, democracy” .

Freedom of expression should not only encompass a negative freedom from censorship and coercion,

but also involve positive measures to promote equal and effective participation in decision-making

through transparency and open government. It is in the nature of hierarchical power structures

to become opaque and foster internal secrecy while seeking transparency from others in order to exercise maximum control .

But policy choices cannot be settled merely by the pronouncements of those in authority
