Hi everyone, Ive been trying to find the answer to this problem that might be a dumb one, but its stoping me from contributing more to the project. I added my Laptop on a LAN with a desktop pc which is connected to the internet through cable broadband. So my Laptop connects to the internet through this desktop pc. I have Boinc installed in both computers, and my desktop pc gets WU without problems, but i cant get WU for my Laptop, I check the messages at the Laptops BOINC and the reason it seems to give is that "User is already active". What does that mean. Cant I have 2 computers with the same internet connection work on BOINC? Network and internet connectivity are working just fine on both computers, it must be something at BOINCs end that its not allowing me to run it on both computers at the same time. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanx and good luck to you all! eric ____________ |

Hi everyone, Ive been trying to find the answer to this problem that might be a dumb one, but its stoping me from contributing more to the project. How did you load BOINC on the laptop? Assuming that you loaded BOINC instead of just copying it, BOINC will assign a new host ID when you attach to the project. If you copy too many files, you have two machines with the same host ID and that isn't allowed. |

I have posted a reply to your original thread at SETI Beta. |

Hi everyone, Ive been trying to find the answer to this problem that might be a dumb one, but its stoping me from contributing more to the project. If the internet is working fine, I'm betting that you have ICS working just fine, so I don't believe your issue is there. I'm willing to bet you have the laptop to only do work while user is inactive. This means that it will only fetch WUs when you are away too. If you try to force BOINC to get WUs by hitting the Update button, it will tell you that the user is active. To test my theory, you can always try opening BOINC Manager in Advanced mode, click on Activity -> Run Always, then hit the Update button like you normally would (remember to select SETI@Home first from the project list). |

U are a winner u bet u won... the "Run Always" thing, that did it! Thanx ozz, thanx richard, u were right too... thanx all of you... Now... if you are still willing to bet... I got another problem now... The Laptop is working on its 1st WU now, but EXTREMELY slowly (it´ll take 10 secs for 1 CPU time second to pass) At this rate the WU would take 24hrs of constant cpu time to complete (I asume multiplyied by 10 because of how time is elapsing) Any ideas? Any bets... I did check preferences but couldnt come up with a solution. Thanks againg (I hope Im not pushing it too far) You guys have been very kind. The Laptop is working on its 1st WU now, but EXTREMELY slowly (it´ll take 10 secs for 1 CPU time second to pass) Hmmm ... that depends what else you've got running. Assuming you're running Windows (sounds like you are), try a Ctrl+Alt+Del to pull up the Task Manager. Sort the columns by CPU with the highest at the top. You can then see what's sapping your cycles. If the SETI process sits at the top at 100% (or two at 50%) then all's fine. Else investigate which application is working and taking the processor's time up. HTH. Steve. |

Oh - and make sure you're running the optimised application too ... makes every cycle far more efficient! Cheers, Steve. |

Thanks for your response Suzuki, Ive checked what u told me, I checked the task manager and went to the processes list, no processes seem to be using cpu except for the System Idle Process (which as far as i know its not a real process), 2 weird things though: 1)This system idle process shows a 90 to 99 of cpu activity... and 2)the boinc process varies in cicles... each 5 to 10 secs kind of "activates" and uses the cpu to 100... for a second, then back to cero... and so forth... Each time it activates a second on the cpu time (on boinc)passes... Make the story short: Boinc works every 5 secs, but just for 1 sec... Crazy... You can see the laptop system at my computers... Im not running any other program or project... My boinc version is the last one 5.10.20, and Im not sure what you mean by the "optimised application". I have to say Im sorry for my ignorance in the matter, as u can tell Im pretty new here... Hope you guys can bear with me, if not I understand... Just thought since my laptop is free most of the time i could use it for something productive.... Thanks again!!! That's pretty classic behavior for you having the setting to "use at most XXX percent of CPU time" set to something like 20 instead of 100. It's either in the "general" settings on your account page, or if you have a local over-ride set, it's on that system only. -Dave ![]() |

Dnolan, I want to say you are a genious... but Im starting to think Im the dumb one... lol What the HECK, You are a genious! That made it! I promise Ill learn this stuff guys and contribute to this board with more than silly problems... Thanks to everyone that helped!! Because of you guys we have 1 extra computer working on the project and a happy cruncher... Hope some day Ill be able to help you guys! My best to all! And for the optimised apps try having a look through this thread. You should find a SETI app for your processor/operating system and you'll notice a massive increase in the amount of work you get through. Hope this helped! Steve. |

Crazy...<snip> Tip, If you click the header of the CPU column it will sort the processes by ascending/descending CPU usage alternating between asc/desc on each click. Makes it easier to see what's getting what %CPU much easier. ![]() |
