Hi, Do you /need/ color? If not, get a monocrome laser. I'm happy with my simple HP Laserjet 1020. |

The HP DeskJet 712C that I bought in 1999 only came with half-sized cartridges, along with its having to be replaced twice, early-on, via almost an hoursworth of across-the-country toll calls. I minimize printing to keep the cost down. I still use that printer. The expensive cartridges are available at Kroger, the grocery store I shop at. I like to print software manuals (I use Linux) and the slides presented at events such as the BOINC Pan-galactic Convention just held in Geneva, so I do a lot of printing also in color. |

Well, you know about the urban legend that HP gives printers away below cost so they can make their money on the ink........ Why urban legend?? Gillette pioneered this marketing model when they gave away razors and sold the razor blades. It works very well. |

I like to print astronomical images in color, so I need a color cartridge. I also print digital photos. Lately I discovered a service by HP called Snapfish that collects my digital photos via Internet, prints them in the size I want and sends them to me by snail mail in about 4 days. Last year I bought an Olivetti printer made in Malaysia to print A6 photos but it lasted only one year. I still have an Olivetti AT&T UNIX PC made in 1987 and a Lettera 32 typewriter made in Brazil so I was tempted to buy that printer but it did not measure to its brand name. Tullio |

Laser printers are the only way to go for everything except photo-quality images. I have a toner cartridge in my Brother that is at least 4 years old and still going strong. Sure they may be a bit more up-front, but will save big $$ over time. Dublin, California Team: SETI.USA

Ready for a chuckle? I still have my Compaq Deskpro 386 running Dos 6.22 & Windows 3.11WFG. I'm sure glad MS came to their senses for a bit and at least extended sales of XP for a bit. And as to printers, Forget HP(Except for the Car;), More like HorsePower;)), I have a Panasonic 24pin multi-mode printer that I got for free from My Nephew, He had a neighbor that was tossing It out(What stupidity) cause supposedly It didn't work right, All It needed was New Ribbons(eBay-I bought 12), New form feed paper(eBay-I bought a box) and a USB-Centronics Printer cable(eBay-again) and the printer may be black and white on the print outs, But It works like a champ, Not bad for less than $60 total and It's XP x64 compatible now to boot. Two thumbs up to the Printer and My Nephew! My Amazon Wishlist The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Here in Europe Pelikan refills black HP cartridges but not color cartridges. I once tried a refilled color cartridge for my HP 710C but it did not print. Now a friend has given me a HP 825c which he discarded and I had to pay 30 euros for the color cartridge and 26 euros for the black. But it is a good printer. Tullio |

No kidding! I bought a Lexmark printer/scanner/fax/copier combo for $59 and found out that the replacement ink cartridges for it cost $65! Just recently found inkjet printers at a local department store for $29 so that looks like the way to go! Buy a new printer and when it runs out of ink just toss it and buy another! Looked into an ink cartridge refill kit but until recently I couldn't find one for my printer. Finally found one for my Lexmark printer but I have left the cartridges out in my workshop over the winter so all of them have frozen and cracked the case. Gonna have to pay the $65 for new cartridges before I can use the refill kit! Looks like everything is going disposable nowadays! Ready for a chuckle? I still have my Compaq Deskpro 386 running Dos 6.22 & Windows 3.11WFG. Funny you should mention printers- up to a year ago (when I bought a Laser printer), I was still using an old impact printer for program listings, etc. A ribbon cost $5 and lasted a year, ink cartridges lasted 1 - 1 1/2 months and cost $30! Ready for a chuckle? I still have my Compaq Deskpro 386 running Dos 6.22 & Windows 3.11WFG. It has some pretty good & addictive games, Also programs that have never been upgraded to w98 or xp. Also using HP LaserJet III, unfortunately, it's getting difficult to get toner cartridges for it. I was tempted to run bionc on it but it is too slow for that. |

Someone should start to update NT, 'cuz it was the most stable thing that Microbone ever came up with. I still have one machine that will boot DOS 6.22 (tri boot with Linux and Win2K). I mainly keep it to make a point to friends about software "bloat". Linux takes 40 seconds to "come active" (at desktop, ready to work), Win2K takes 70 seconds, Dos takes 20 seconds. My newest machine (WinXP x64 Pro, Q6600 @ 2.8 GHz) amazes me. It is faster than the dickens once it finally boots, but takes forever to load firmware drivers and then Windows- almost 2 minutes. PS- If you want to have fun, take an old Dos based game (I have an antique version of Tetris) and run it on a new machine- you click on start and the game is over. They used to use timing loops to do delays (for n=1 to 1000; x=x; next x) because the OS's were not multi-threaded. Boinc Button Abuser In Training >My Shrubbers< |
