I just heard. He is helping with it. My mistake.

Nah. JM7 doesn't make mistakes. He's just the last one to know. ;-)

There is something about the grapevine ending just outside of my door.

Blurf is doing Hardware donations, not money donations. I have forwarded the message (again) to an administrator.

Oh. I saw him offer help over in NC about money donation so I assumed he was in charge of it.

Well, this is getting disheartening, no updates, no communication, no change on the lunatics site, no reply from Simon, just crickets. Did the money go out the window, or did it even make it to SETI? Anyone home? It's been a month and a half. Thanks.

I'm apologize about the lack of communication. I have flagged your post so that the person in charge of handling donations can check into it. I believe Blurf (the guy who posted above yours) is the one who should be looking into it. You can PM him with your details so he can find out what's going on.

Post here again if you don't hear from him within a 24 hours.

Well, it's been over a month now, just went back in and checked the paypal donations total on http://lunatics.at/?page=seti_donate, and it was the same as the last time I looked weeks ago. I noticed that the Paypal method of contribution had been turned off a couple weeks ago due to technical difficulties, wondering what the status of this is, and if I will be hearing back from Simon about that tax cert? Just looking for any updates. Thanks!

Message 642276 - Posted: 16 Sep 2007, 12:33:04 UTC - in response to Message 642060.

p.s. could you elaborate a little on the politics of Paypal and the school? I can't for the life of me imagine what issue they could have with it. They take CC's, so what's the diff? Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

This part is kind of easy. Paypal must have a bank account to it. The school doesn't want someone like Paypal to have the ability to withdraw money at any time (say Paypal is hacked for Berkeley). Plus there are percentage issues, because Paypal takes a percentage all the time, then the school takes a percentage, then Seti gets the rest. If people start Paypaling $1, etc. SETI would get nothing after everything is done. Plus the maintenance of it would take to make sure it's good, etc. Just too much of a pain for the school.

As for your star, etc. I believe a lot of this has to do with Eric's vacation/holiday. He was gone for over 2 weeks. When he came back about a week ago, he was inundated with a ton to do. He may not have had time to work with the Paypal donation stuff. He is the sole person right now at SETI working on the Paypal side, along with the Chicken group. Eric had a lot of proposals he needed to finish, etc. He also run SETI Beta, which has been missing him for a while now, also. He's just had time to get it doing "some" work, but no new Astropule work, etc. I am sure when he finally digs himself out of his hole, he will start getting on the Paypal donations, and the Beta project.

Pooh Bear 27, thanks for the reply, it's been a little while now, so I thought I would check back at that page. I noticed it went up a little bit, so some money has been reported from paypal, but it didn't go up the amount I gave, it was much less. Any idea if it happens more than once a month? I still haven't gotten a reply from him yet either, I'm still hanging loose. Thanks again.

Well, I saw that there is finally a way to make a donation via Paypal, so I did last week. The addy I did it thru was http://lunatics.at/?page=seti_donate and went thru the paypal process. It showed up in Paypal as the money being transferred, but I have been watching the page since I did it for the total to go up, it's now been 3-5 days, and nothing's changed. I also sent an email to the person listed on the page (simon dot zadra at gmail dot com) a couple times requesting a tax exemption certificate of my donation be mailed to me, but haven't yet received a reply from him. I am starting to get a little worried about this, does anyone know if this site is on the up & up, and that the money is actually going to go to SETI? Any positive response would be reassuring. Thanks!

I would think the money is going to SETI if they have it set up on their site, but I would suggest they use a berkeley email address.

I'm gonna get my donation in, in a few weeks.

Edit.

I just made my donation. Just had do, couldn't resist. :).

There are school political reasons that pay pal may not be directly set up through the school. The school allows Credit Card donations (click a green star) or snail mail donations, but not paypal

I got you. Forgot about those politics. You can't live with em, u can't live without em.

Anyways, as long as the money is going to the project, that's what really counts.

Btw, do I get a green star next to my name?

assuming that your email address was specified correctly in the pay pal order and you do not have anonymous donations checked in you account page, you get one when the school gets the money. There have been a few problems with this in the past, but they have all been resolved

The Paypal donations are transfered I believe once a month to Berkeley. So, it takes some time for the process to go through. There is no need to worry.

The other issue is Eric, the person who handles the Paypal donations once they get to Berkeley had been on vacation / holiday and is just getting back into the swing of things. He is in the middle of a large proposal for Astropulse, plus programming same such, and a few other things, so his time is limited at the moment.

Please be patient. It will go through. It may take longer right now, but I have 100% confidence that all will get done.
