“Rules of Optimization:
Rule 1: Don’t do it.
Rule 2 (for experts only): Don’t do it yet.”
—M.A. Jackson

“More computing sins are committed in the name of efficiency (without necessarily achieving it) than for any other single reason—including blind stupidity.”
—W.A. Wulf

“We should forget about small efficiencies, say about 97% of the time: premature optimization is the root of all evil.”
—Donald Knuth

“No amount of optimizing the implementation of a slow algorithm will turn it into a fast one.”

“Optimize after there are zero bugs. There never are zero bugs.”

LOL!

The fastest optimization is to ignore the procedure and just blind guess a result!

And Metafont … I would assume so, but I didn’t attempt to verify any of the sources.

... and "The Art of Computer Programming" -- which I hope he'll finish now that he's through with TeX and Metafont.

He's scheduled to finish that grand work just before he dies.

I just hope that if he finishes early, he can defer the dying bit so that he can enjoy a happy retirement for a while!

Martin
