For the last week and a half or so, I've been getting the following message on the 2 machines I have at work. SETI@home|[file_xfer] Temporarily failed download of setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe: can't resolve hostname Just did a Reset Project, and a number of files were successfully downloaded EXCEPT for the 5.27 exe file Any thoughts Jim |

I read somewhere on these boards that this can be a firewall blocking executable downloads. I'm not sure if that turned out to be the case, but it might be worth looking into. Jim Synoski and WyerByter, There is a way around it, however, you sacrafice having the graphics. You can download an optimized app found in the thread New Optimized Apps Links -- READ ONLY THREAD. These optimized applications run a little bit faster than the stock 5.27 app, there is instructions on how to install it. If you both feel like checking it out, please do. If you need any help, also ask, there are lots and lots of great folks out here that are willing to help out. :-) Jeremy |

For the last week and a half or so, I've been getting the following message on the 2 machines I have at work. If you be bored do this: Download file http://koti.mbnet.fi/~amon/files/setiathome/setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86_files.zip Unzip missing files one by one to C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\setiathome.berkeley.edu Select missing file from BOINC and click retry |

I am having the same problem since I completely reinstalled Boinc (5.10.13) on August 10. My other projects (Einstein@Home , uFluids and LHC@home) successfully downloaded their files. |

It took a few tries, but eventually the downloaded zip worked on both machines. Thanks. Jim Synoski |

For the last week and a half or so, I've been getting the following message on the 2 machines I have at work. Any chance of getting this uploaded again? I keep getting messages that the zipfile is corrupted. I did this on 2 different computers. Thanks |

For the last week and a half or so, I've been getting the following message on the 2 machines I have at work. I just downloaded it and got a good file. Checked integrity with 2 different unzip applications, compared the extracted files to those previously downloaded from the project. In case it's an issue with some server between you and that source, I've put a copy of the file at http://users.westelcom.com/jsegur/SAHenh/setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86_files.zip. Maybe that will work better for you. Joe |

Thanks, I will try it tomorrow when I can get back to that computer. |

Is this file still present on your server? I have clicked the link several times, but keep getting "cannot display the web page" error... Is this file still present on your server? I have clicked the link several times, but keep getting "cannot display the web page" error... Yes it is - it's just downloaded fine here (UK). OK, thanks; that means it's getting blocked here... Yes it is - it's just downloaded fine here (UK). |

OK, thanks; that means it's getting blocked here... Maybe a right-click and whatever option your browser offers to save the file would be better. That's just a guess from the "cannot display the web page" error. Joe |

OK, so I get 9/3/2007 6:46:52 PM|SETI@home|[file_xfer] Started download of file setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe 9/3/2007 6:47:12 PM|SETI@home|[file_xfer] Temporarily failed download of setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe: can't resolve hostname I flush DNS cache, do a few pings, etc., find nothing wrong here. Go to the xml file and see where it's looking for the file: http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe paste that in a browser and see it redirected to: http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu.nyud.net/sah/download_fanout/coral/setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe which does not resolve. Surprise, surprise, surprise! This has been going on for a while. Can anybody actually fix the redirect so it will point to the actual file location? |

I've looked at this extensively, and the problem is not a DNS resolution or redirect problem. The problem is the server is dropping your initial connection request. In fact I just this second used the first url you gave and successfully DL'ed a copy of the executable. Alinator |

I've looked at this extensively, and the problem is not a DNS resolution or redirect problem. The problem is the server is dropping your initial connection request. You're right about it not being a DNS problem. A dropped connection request doesn't generate a "can't resolve hostname" error, though. Note that the redirect changes the path, adding /coral in the middle, not just munging the host. The fact that a URL works for you and not for others can be a result of how the network is configured. Load balancing is one of the things that can do redirects that depend on the source of a request. There are other ways to do it. There are people reporting the error at the head of this thread. It is distinct from the other connection failures. There is no connection reset, just a DNS lookup failure on a non-existent host. Somewhere in the network setup, probably inside UCB, there is a redirect that sends some requests off into never-never land. I rather suspect that since the URL gets munged right after something that says download_fanout, that there is a problem in a redirect table named download_fanout. At least that's where I'd start looking if something like this was happening on my network. |

Agreed, I see your point now. Interestingly enough both urls are working right at the moment. Perhaps we were seeing different manifestations of the same problem before? In this case the ipconfig /dnsflush trick may help. When I was investigating earlier I had cases where I made the initial connection to the DL server, but the DL still died after a longer delay. I was attributing it to a dropped connection but on the SSL network itself, and the difference was one was showing as the infamous '21 Second' deaf ear timeout, and the other would come with an http; system connect or other error. Since I was looking at the network analyzer output for the most part, I probably wasn't paying enough attention to what the browser was trying to tell me and missed the fact it was being redirected to lala land. In this case the ipconfig /dnsflush trick may help. Well, after looking at it again, there is one thing that I had not considered. The redirect might be valid, but my DNS provider is having trouble with the host in the URL. And yes, that seems to be a real possibility, particularly since you say you can reach both URLs. Whois.internic.net says boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu.nyud.net resolves, but Earthlink's name servers don't know it exists. Called Earthlink tech support, spoke to a tech who ran me through netsh interface ip delete arpcache netsh winsock reset catalog reboot clear all the stuff in IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete... All to no effect. The tech could not resolve the nyud.net hostname, either. Explained that the host resolves in whois, but not through Earthlink. Tech opened a ticket. I'll check it in the morning. |
