I suppose the title of the thread says it all. Maybe we should rename the 'Religious Thread' to 'Fun with Religion'... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

It's time to forget about ever increasing levels of energy consumption, and past time to seek real solutions. Who says we have to keep increasing our use of energy every year? What would happen if Canadians and Americans were to have our energy consumption cut in half? Do you really believe that we'd be dying in the dark under that circumstance? |

It's time to forget about ever increasing levels of energy consumption, and past time to seek real solutions. Probably not. But there sure would be a whole lot of people just wandering around. Air Cold, the blade stops; from silent stone, Death is preordained Calm Chaos Forums : Everyone Welcome |

I saw this before when the "crisis du jour" was Y2K. The news articles warned that cities would lose their food and water supplies, passenger planes would fall from the sky, etc, etc, riots and anarchy would consume all the major world cities. And I knew of some folks that I thought of as intelligent and well read that bought into the whole thing. One couple actually sold their home and moved up into the smokey mountains of tennessee with packaged food and lots of guns to defend themselves from the coming hordes of starving city people. They have never returned, I suppose they were too embarresed because they were often quoted in the local paper. Beware of any "authoritive" news story that contains the words ‘if’, ‘might’, ‘could’, ‘probably’, ‘perhaps’, ‘expected’, ‘projected’ or ‘modeled’ Man - a creature made at the end of the week's work when God was tired. - Mark Twain |

As far as the delicate balance in climate that humans depend on for survival, please note that humans occupied every region from the deserts to the artic tundra before the industrial revolution, and a lot of them were using stone age tools to do it with. I am one who has just finished his last WU in BBC Climate (the project is finishing) and also crunched a lot in ClimatePrediction, and also SAP (Seasonal Attribution Project). I've had a lot of fun with Climate, and can see the funny side of it, as well as other projects, including SETI. But I am no scientist, I don't understand all the science, but can take a joke thrown at something I believe in as well as the next person. But at least I'm doing my bit, lending my support for these projects. Science and politics are two very different things. Those that laugh at something usually have no idea what they are laughing at. But if it's a good joke, heck, let's hear it ;) flaming balloons |

It's time to forget about ever increasing levels of energy consumption, and past time to seek real solutions. Actually, reducing our consumption by 50% would take us back to about the levels used in 1960. Everyone seemed to get along fine then. To put energy use in a modern day setting, people in France use half of what we here in Canada and the U.S. use annually and they aren't suffering either. Where does this fear of reduced energy consuption come from? Hmmm...I wonder. |

I saw this before when the "crisis du jour" was Y2K. If it weren't for the 'software update', Y2K could've happened... Too bad the ozone layer can't be fixed so easily... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

I saw this before when the "crisis du jour" was Y2K. Rational people didn't go to extremes at that time. My suggestion is to look at the drivers of the claims being made. Y2K was being promoted by individuals and companies trying to sell you something, upgrades on computers or entire new systems, survival equipment and remote properties. The Global Warming warnings are not for profit, but a very real concern for the future of the planet. No one is trying to sell you a way out of climate change, they are trying to get you to change your ways in terms of energy consumption. |

Rational people didn't go to extremes at that time. At the time, I had a Mac with OS9 and Linux installed and a PC with Windows and Linux installed... They all worked fine after Y2K and I didn't do anything special to any of them... It was my little Y2K test... (The 'end of the world' bit was totally ridiculous, but the 'computer crash' bit was a very plausible scenario.) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

I saw this before when the "crisis du jour" was Y2K. I'm going to have to illustrate your errors again. 'global warmings are not for profit'.....come on now. The many UN sponsored groups and media groups that advocate man made global warming are raking in huge 'profits'....thanks to the style of governments that you advocate. Really, R.Waite, do you not know that the 1k scientists that fondle for government handouts compete and win over the 1k scientists that disagree and don't get those grant monies? I mean, come on.....but that's the kind of government you keep advocating for. It's corrupt and avoids honest pursuit of truth. That's what happens when you try to sell the idea that pursuit of the initiation of force trumps the protection of individual rights. Reap what you sow. You keep supporting more radical solutions to the problems that your 'solutions' created as problems in the first place. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! There are plenty of folks that are already set up to make money off of the global warming, this is what I found (in a few minutes) using a search engine: - Shop at xxxx.com for low prices on Books on global warming. Free Super Saver Shipping on qualified orders over $25. - One company provided me a handy calculator that based on the information i provided could sell me carbon offsets at only $272.00 per year. - Another company will sell me a "green" house. - Several groups that will accept a "donation" to help fight global warming. - Someone that will come and lecture me about global warming, he expects a small Honorarium (he does't say how much) - Several travel companies that will take me on a tour to see the effects of global warming. - any number of gadgets, windmills, solar panels etc. that I can install myself to prevent global warming. It appears to me that it is just like Y2k, the folks that i will have to buy guns to fight off will be fleeing from a: their flooded cities because the ice caps melted b: starvation - as all the farms will be destroyed by no rain c: monsterous storms such as hurricanes (with apparently no rain in them) d: earthquakes caused by melting glaciers (yes i did find someone saying that on the web but couldn't we use glacier water to farm with?) e: folks fleeing from centera america (i think they already are here, one of them offered to rake my yard the other day) f: poison ivy, duke university says it grows at an alarming rate with extra co2 in the air Man - a creature made at the end of the week's work when God was tired. - Mark Twain |

It's time to forget about ever increasing levels of energy consumption, and past time to seek real solutions. Well, Robert. You know that I just LIVE to entertain you....lol Think about it though. If people had to stop using their cars and trucks and SUV's....do you think they could remember their way to the grocery store if they couldn't drive there?? Hence, the " wandering around ". :-) Air Cold, the blade stops; from silent stone, Death is preordained Calm Chaos Forums : Everyone Welcome |

There are plenty of folks that are already set up to make money off of the global warming, this is what I found (in a few minutes) using a search engine: These are examples of vipers trying to cash in on the message. These are not examples of the messengers. I believe you'll find it quite impossible linking Nobel winning scientists to any of these companies. I won't dispute that someone will always be trying to make a buck off of any situation Tom, but the people who have warned us about our possible future are not in that group. |
