. . . exercisING undue authority

The uses of "a well modulated meow"

Freedom of expression and independent journalism are among the pillars of a democracy.

The scope for freedom of speech determines the public area for democratic exchange. “This public information space ...

is still the vitally important as it provides the life force for, but may also set the limits of, democracy” .

Freedom of expression should not only encompass a negative freedom from censorship and coercion,

but also involve positive measures to promote equal and effective participation in decision-making

through transparency and open government. It is in the nature of hierarchical power structures

to become opaque and foster internal secrecy while seeking transparency from others in order to exercise maximum control .

But policy choices cannot be settled merely by the pronouncements of those in authority

Let's face it, Richard:

Things are that way in Yemen, because Yemeni men like it that way. They probably laugh at you, think you're a wimp.

And to play the Devil's Advocate here, please don't tell me that you've never had the urge to smack a woman one (or a guy, for that matter). In our culture, we can't. And there are some people who take full advantage of that by using a nasty tongue with impunity, knowing exactly that.

What do you do when a woman pushes your buttons, gets right under your skin to abuse you verbally until you can't take it anymore? Leave the house?

Yemeni men laugh at that!

"Undue"? It's always been that way there. You want to take something away from them. I don't think it will sell in Yemen.

And that's the flip side of the coin. ;)

I can not take away the suffering of others but Yemeny women are not so poor of soul.

What about those that stand up and make a difference.

The world is not perfect.

In the western world we are quite lucky.

A Different Beat....

But if they were just like you or me they would be just as scared to not be in control..

No Yemeni started our race.

Men do so many bad things.. Some are worse than others but no individual is beyond saving...

Why are we so obsessed with the Yemen?

Yemen is probably one of many countries in the world where women are treated that way (as alleged in the article). It's a cultural thing. That is, that it's still not considered to be such a bad thing to do.

If you have a society where men force their women to cover from head to toe, there's some sort of fear facor at work. The fear of other men actually seing the faces of their women.

Ummm ... to be blunt, that assumes the woman would be attractive to other men.
Some are.
Some ... probably not. :(

Um, I think you misunderstand the practice A/C, with respect.

The women are covered up to preserve the intimacy of their appearance for their husbands' enjoyment, I think. It seems more of a property right to me, than any kind of cowardice.

There's probably a fine line between the enjoyment/property right and the fear of another man seeing her face.
I am trying to remember if I have been told another interpretation of this practice, whether by my Muslim friends or anyone else.

There is a fine line between the two, and I think it's a question of cultural context.

This seems to be a fundamentalist trait. Orthodox Jewish women wear wigs in public for the same reason I gave. The same with the Quaker women in Pennsylvania and their bonnets; though modesty per se, to be 'plain', is a part of that too.

I've heard about the wigs. Mostly among Hasids, correct?

Ah yes, now that is so much more humane. Gee, think what would happen if some woman took off her vail. All that intimacy, gone forever.

Why are we so obsessed with the Yemen?

Because it suits their agenda?

It wasn't so long ago that right here in america women used to dress 'modestly' too... I don't recall that being a 'forced' issue but rather a 'personal' issue... ;)

But then again....not all THAT long ago....any woman wearing a dress that was short enough to show her ankles was considered a tramp.

Times change, Jeffrey. You either deal with it, or you don't.
