Even though there are a few processors designed for a substantial overclock (perhaps 25 percent) most may tolerate only 5 to 10 percent of overclock. With overclocking problems like heat buildup and more errors occur. I would never think of overclocking my D950s. They have watercoolers and I have an idea they run hot. Some of the more expensive Core 2 Duos might be able to handle a good overclock. Mark Sattler has his Core 2 Quad overclocked to produce an RAC of something approaching 6000 (once in a while) but I see he is having some trouble. I understand that Core 2 Quads are really two Core 2 Duos put together on one die so naturally, twice as much wattage is dissipated. Ah yes.....trouble in quaddyland. I 'upgraded' the mobo to a new P5K, and kinda lost the holy grail of settings that were working on my Commando. It's back up and running now, but has been besieged with a lot of low-yield WUs, and has been trying to build it's cache back up since the last crash I had that wiped the OS. Each time it requests work, it usually gets a mouthful of short deadline WUs and drops everything else to work on them. So you get a double whammy of poor return on crunch time, plus whatever you return is newly issued, and usually goes into pending rather than getting the RAC back up there. Oh, well. If the kitties can keep it stable for a week or so, the RAC will take care of itself. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." Albert Einstein "With cats." kittyman

Most of Core 2 Duos have potencial to overclock over 50%. That is a reason to be a preffered choice of overclockers, because from time of Celeron 300A, who was able to work on 450MHz, we don't have so good CPU-s in terms of overclocking.

Another thing to consider is if the people you are looking at are over-clocking their PCs and you're not. The answer to that is not simple. Try checking out overclockers.com and browse around. And/or google for other sites. -Dave

Another thing to consider is if the people you are looking at are over-clocking their PCs and you're not. How much important data etc. is on your computers? Or. How big a disaster would it be if everything failed? How much time and resources do you have? Who built the computers? Popular makes like Dell, HP make it difficult for you to O/C. Did you install the optimised apps from the Chicken coop? On your computers they can cut crunching time in half. See Shadows experience his results went from resultid=559086278 22254 sec to resultid=559354621 9925 sec at same angle range (AR) = 0.436. Andy |

I can't check much for you because your computers are hidden. But if you are not already doing so, you can boost the output of all of your computers just by adding a bit of Chicken to your crunching stewpot. Just download the automatic installer, and it will select the correct app to match your cpu and install it for you. Wow, that makes a big difference. I bow down at your feet. TY TY TY. |

I'm fairly new to this stuff and am running SETI on six machines, three klunkers and three fairly fast ones and I've noticed that there are some people getting better results on older and slower machines than on my newer machines. Why? I can't check much for you because your computers are hidden. But if you are not already doing so, you can boost the output of all of your computers just by adding a bit of Chicken to your crunching stewpot. Just download the automatic installer, and it will select the correct app to match your cpu and install it for you. The link above is for the non-graphics (no pretty screesaver, just a basic one) versions. If you desire, there is a graphics version also, just a little slower when the screensaver is running. If you need any help, just post back here. Otherwise, enjoy the Chicken and watch your RAC get a bit of a bump. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." I'm fairly new to this stuff and am running SETI on six machines, three klunkers and three fairly fast ones and I've noticed that there are some people getting better results on older and slower machines than on my newer machines. Why? These are the cpu's in the newer machines: 1. Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.60GHz 2. AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ [x86 Family 15 Model 107 Stepping 1] [fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 sse3 3dnow mmx] 3. Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 7] I'm running XP on all the machines. |
