Message 591527 - Posted: 24 Jun 2007, 2:35:20 UTC

Hello:

I have 17 finished wu's waiting for upload, but for some reason they don't upload and I get no d/l's either. I didn't change anything when this started occurring, but since then I decided to update to the latest BOINC and it didn't change a thing...not that I expected it to make a difference. I have three computers on my network and the other two are having no trouble with u/l's or d/l's, so I'm really stumped on why this computer isn't cutting the mustard suddenly.

This is a copy of the messages that I am receiving......

6/23/07 5:41:43 PM|SETI@home|Requesting 600615 seconds of new work, and reporting 17 completed tasks
6/23/07 5:41:44 PM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.
6/23/07 5:42:29 PM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
6/23/07 5:42:29 PM|SETI@home|Scheduler request failed: couldn't connect to server
6/23/07 5:42:29 PM|SETI@home|Deferring communication for 8 min 29 sec
6/23/07 5:42:29 PM|SETI@home|Reason: scheduler request failed
6/23/07 5:42:31 PM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.

I've checked often and the project servers are always running just fine.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

Thanks, Allen

Have you tried:

1) stop BOINC
2) power cycle any routers to clear the DNS cache.
3) from a DOS prompt "ipconfig /flushdns"
4) start BOINC.

Have you checked your personal firewall to ensure that BOINC.exe is allowed to call out on ports 443 and 80?

John,

Thank you for your reply and suggestions. I tried this before and it didn't help, but I tried it again, just to be sure and it still didn't help. I am using a Linksys router and am hardwired to it. I have gone through all of my setup in the router and don't see anything out of order. As I mentioned in my last post, the other two systems on this network are working fine and are going through the same router and modem. I'm on a SBC dsl connection to the net. Everything else on this system is working great.

After restarting BOINC I copied this from the message section........

Could you create a cc_config.xml file in your boinc directory with the following contents?

The message log after a failure with some more logging turned on might tell us something. At the moment, I have no idea what is going on.

It is happening to me as well.

My machine finished all the work allocated, sent the results off - nothing came back, SETI has vanished from my "projects" list, I can't get back in touch - nothing/nada/nix/null/zero.
No information at all.

Normally, if I type "localhost" into Advanced / Set Computer, it fixes the problem, but not this time.
I've tried altering my preferences, but I can't even get in touch.

What is happening here, please?

I may add that ALL the sub-windows in my BOINC Manager are completely blank, and the only "buttons" that show active status (and not greyed-out) are those under the "messages" tab - where copy all messages is live, and everything under the statistics tab - not that clicking on any of them produces any result.

Something has dropped out/off somewhere - but what?

WELL!

Something happened there ...

Suddenly it all came back again, and my task manager is now showing 55-90% usage, and all is well, for the time being.

Confusing though.

Allen, I see this thread is in two places. Let me repeat the same post I made over on the Number Crunching board:

I'm experiencing a very similar problem to Allen.

I upgraded to BOINC V5.10.7 late last week. Since then, I've been unable to upload any results. I also cannot contact the scheduler, and so I cannot obtain new work. I was able to download a few work units immediately after upgrading, but nothing since then.

Strangely, I was able to obtain some work from SETI Beta this morning (Central African time). However, I am also not able to upload results to SETI Beta, and contact with the SETI Beta scheduler is patchy at best.

I'm getting a variety of error messages:

2007/06/25 09:33:36 AM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user
2007/06/25 09:33:36 AM|SETI@home|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)

2007/06/25 10:10:46 AM|SETI@home|Scheduler request failed: server returned nothing (no headers, no data)

I have stopped and re-started BOINC; I have re-booted; I have flushed the DNS cache. Repeatedly, all to no avail.

[Update: recently, after flushing the DNS cache, I achieved one, and only one, successful scheduler request to SETI Main. However, no uploading or downloading is possible, and all subsequent scheduler requests have failed.]

Any help with this would be appreciated.

John,

I truly appreciate you trying to help with my problem and I guess I'm not much help, since I don't know how to create a cc-config.xml file in my boinc directory. If you will tell me how, I would be glad to construct one for you.

Thanks again,

It seems to want to defer communication a lot or the project doesn't want to upload or download work. Is this starting to make any sense to you???

WHOA!!!!

I just went back and all finished WU's are uploading as I write this. It has also d/led about 30 new ones and it is now crunching away. I don't have any idea what made it finally start crunching, but it is, so I'm not going to question it.

Thanks again for time and considerate help. If you do figure out what the problem was, I'd still be interested to know though.

Allen

The message log after a failure with some more logging turned on might tell us something. At the moment, I have no idea what is going on.

John,

I truly appreciate you trying to help with my problem and I guess I'm not much help, since I don't know how to create a cc-config.xml file in my boinc directory. If you will tell me how, I would be glad to construct one for you.

Thanks again,

Allen

Sorry, use notepad.exe. copy the contents into the editor, and save as cc_config.xml (notice that it is underscore not dash).

John,

I thought you might find this interesting. I just went back to and did an UPDATE and got this.........

Allen

i HATE it when things start working without explanation.

Message 592674 - Posted: 26 Jun 2007, 2:10:25 UTC - in response to Message 592323.

Completely different problem. What you are experiencing is a local failure of communications between the BOINC Manager (UI) and the BOINC Daemon (controller).

So, I have solved my communication problem, for now. After trawling around the BOINC message boards, I realised the problem was probably related to my company's HTTP proxy server. There are a few threads on the BOINC boards which suggested this, although none of them provided a solution.

All I did was uncheck the "Connect via HTTP proxy server" box in the HTTP Proxy tab, which is found under <Advanced> <Options> in BOINC Manager. Doing this re-established full communication with SETI Main and SETI Beta: uploads, reporting, downloads and scheduler requests all went through.

It seems the BOINC V5.10.x architecture results in problems for clients that are behind (both SOCKS and HTTP) proxy servers.

Could you create a cc_config.xml file in your boinc directory with the following contents?

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<sched_op_debug>1</sched_op_debug>
<http_debug>1</http_debug>
<http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>
The message log after a failure with some more logging turned on might tell us something. At the moment, I have no idea what is going on.[/quote]

I am having the same problem. I have 19 wu's waiting to upload, but they keep deferring to later. The program is still able to download and process new wu's, but no upload. The message log says that BOINC can't upload, but the connection to the reference Site succeeds. The problem started while I was on vacation so I know its nothing that I did. I have cleared the DNS cache as suggested, and I have installed the latest version of BOINC. I have setup the cc_config.xml file as you suggested and the message log follows (sorry about the length, but I didn't edit the log because I don't know what might be significant):

Internal server error is a server side problem, not a client side problem. Again, different problem.

John,

Thanks for looking through the log file. I missed the 500 error when I read the log file before posting it. Before starting verbose logging my message log looked identical to the earlier post. So, if this is a server side error is there someone that I should contact, or just wait and hope that the problem goes away? Some of the processed wu's are within a day or so of the reporting deadline, and I like to be able to report them before they expire.

Internal server error is a server side problem, not a client side problem. Again, different problem.

That particular problem has been sporadic.

I copied the contents of your message into a notepad file and saved it as you instructed in the Boinc directory. Then I shutdown Boinc and restarted. Was I supposed to do something else. Seems like nothing happened. I am new to this type of stuff, so if it seems that way, it's because I don't have a clue what it's doing.

Thanks again for your help!

Allen
