Message 591159 - Posted: 23 Jun 2007, 15:34:37 UTC - in response to Message 591026.

Sorry. I tend to form most of what I say in a direct way. No insult meant.

But wouldn't you like to know how many females were involved in SETI and their backgrounds?

Go on.. please say yes :o)

For a wee baby, you have a wonderfully smutty mind ;))

I do like the idea that people are sharing information about themselves. It is easy to get into flameing people when we only see them as avatars. But when people realize that there is a real human being on the other keyboard it makes us pause and consider what we type (I hope!)

I might be a wee baby but smutty stuff were never my first thoughts.

Flaming... No.. Did I do that :(

I would love to be more than erudite. I'm not I guess.

I just asked if we could ask more than we already knew.

No one steps up.. even you...

Please show me where I flamed or mistreated anyone or else my post will get moderated.

I want all of us to be equally blessed.

I will happily step out of this thread now.

<PS: I never read the blooming "Mr Wizard" thread... Who really expected me to have?.....>

Crunchy. I think you misunderstood Kenzie's post.

She wasn't stating that you flamed anyone. She was simply saying ( I think ) that it's much easier to type insults about a person if a one doesn't know anything about the person they are writing the post about.

Once a little information is known, it becomes a bit more difficult ( for some ) because then a human factor has been added to an name and avatar.

Few seem to mind picking on an ant...

But don't let the avatar fool you...

I can be a fire ant too... ;)

SNIP cRunchy & kenzieB stuff...

The flavour and implication of what we type has ramifications.

I PM'd kenzieB earlier and she responded.

I may well have misunderstood.

I wish I wasn't so forward sometimes.

It's kind of unavoidable amongst people with strong beliefs I guess.

Sorry kenzieB.

I mess up sometimes.

I did pick you some wild flowers but got hungry and ate them...

I can't eat my smile so if you let me give you a really big smile I hope that makes things a little bit better.

It is nice to see the female posters are looking to be a significant number, even if a minority.

Kenzie ...

I hope Stacey has PMed you as another of our worldwide female clan? If not, is she about and wanting to add to her profile?
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

I am glad to see that there are more women about than I had thought.

Sorry: I've a strict rule never to talk about what happens in the PM. As for Stacey, I don't think she's been around for awhile.

I'm not sure if I want to actively contacting people or continue to let them volunteer. I'll let it go as is for a few days, then maybe I'll start nudging some folks ;)

Do female penguins count?

One of the best things about the world of SETI is that everyone counts.

Post here or PM me privately if you want to be a part of this little poll. :)

Okay, not sure if this is of interest or not.

Here's a link to the poll that ran under SETI classic. It says its was last updated on 13 Jan 2006. The link is: http://seticlassic.ssl.berkeley.edu/polls.html

Interesting to note the following.

Age (from 142121 responses)
0-12 0.34%
13-19 13.43%
20-39 61.18%
40-59 22.82%
60+ 2.23%

Gender (141788 responses)
Male 92.74%
Female 7.26%

Also interesting to look at the following.

Do you think there's life outside Earth? (from 142343 responses)
Yes 93.90%
No 1.43%
Not sure 4.67%

Should the U.S. government fund SETI research? (from 141735 responses)
Yes 78.35%
No 12.25%
Not sure 9.40%

I wonder if these ratios/percentages are still accurate today? Will also be interesting to compare the first two against this poll/survey. Of course this one is probably going to be a lot smaller.

Never surrender and never give up. In the darkest hour there is always hope.

Thanks Simonator.

Very cool link Gavin. I wonder how many mountains would have to be moved to get something like that going again?

I'll send you my contact details and info as requested but won't post here as it's been abused not only here but on other sites through Cafe visitors here. Some people just lack proper manners. I'm glad to see the mods have seen fit to continue to exercise their discretions over some folks that post here.
