I found this link SETI Stack and farm systems a while ago. I have run a system for a few weeks without a case, but some people are against it for safety and EMC reasons. It is probaly fine in a workshop area, but I would not reccomend it when young children or animals may be around. There were also discussions about causing EM noise to neighbours and fire insurance in a previous thread box or not?. Sir Arthur C Clarke 1917-2008

PS- Dust? Nah, I blow the mess off with the air compressor once a week or so. [/quote] Too funny, I made up another excuse for my better half but the real reason I bought our compressor was for Seti....I even have a portable tank I can carry to each machine... It is kind of funny about computer HW. The ABIT VT-7 motherboard hanging of the self on the board at one time (about 4 years ago) was my main Windoze system. I had constant BSOD's so I replaced the MB to fix that problem and threw the ABIT into the parts bin. Recently I stumbled across a blog that noted that this MB and conflict problems with the ram when the Windoze APG driver was loaded. Just for grins, I threw some old parts together with a version of Linux- and bingo! Another cruncher (well with a P4, maybe a nibbler). PS- Dust? Nah, I blow the mess off with the air compressor once a week or so. Boinc Button Abuser In Training >My Shrubbers< |

Where is all the dust !! ??? The pic of mine on the wall is a motherboard I broke trying to upgrade the CPU. I broke one of the CPU mounting brackets clean off and the board will no longer see a hard drive. Was going to throw it away and then saw the posts about BoincPE and since it did see the CDRom decided to give it a try. It has been running like this for a few months and has a RAC of 357, glad I kept it. Top left corner of CPU is a plastic tie strap holding on the CPU. Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... Where is all the dust !! ??? Makes me feel alot better about being lazy and not putting cases back on the computers. Dust & dirt and especially cat hair accumulate so darned fast. Great shots! I *love* 'worthless' hardware being usefully used! SETI@home since 1999 "Set it, and Forget it!" |

LOL, that works... Will have to get a pic later as it is getting dark, but have a system running inside a cardboard box. Threw it all together just to run as a (wireless) captive portal. The open WAP guts are inside tupperware in a birdhouse outside. Its all sealed down with epoxy, except for a few holes on the bottom for condensation. The only thing visible is just the antenna sticking out of the birdhouse. CAT5 and power (DC) is entrenched in the ground (inside PVC pipe to keep critters from chewing it away) and runs up the inside of the post. Its been burning for over 2 years now through rain and snow. Thinking about burying the system in the ground as well... Haven't had to physically touch it since it is been running and can do any necessary reconfig'ing over SSH. Whatever works... :-) |
