Advise to team captains. I assure you it is worth the trouble to follow my example, as it benefits the team (credits) and ease team member frustrations. In my guidance to BOINC@Denmark's team members, I have more or less translated Richard Hazelgrove's original recipe into Danish. I offer two solutions, though: 1) a rather easy one, that simply deactivates the optimized application and 2) a more complicated one, according to Richard's recipe made a little more user friendly. In my original page on optimization, I warn people that they should not optimize unless they know what they are doing and that everything they do is at their own risk. (IMO it is more important that SETI members feel safe and confident while they are crunching for the benefit of the project than to talk people into something they do not fully understand just to satisfy their founder's (my) ambitions on behalf of the team.) I have also added two rather detailed explanations in the forum about the two IMO major error messages, namely the 1. HTTP internal server error and the 2. Incomplete request received. Furthermore, I very early in The Biggest SETI Outage Ever recommended alternative BOINC projects to switch to. It is all about the team members' temperament whether they do one or the other thing. For my team the above has paid off, as the team has increased its RAC fast. Kind regards Kirsten |

I've been asked to repost this from our boards. The original thread and post can be found here While I won't recommend it to my team, there is a third option which I took. That's staying away from seti for the foreseeable future. I can tollerate alot of things, but people being stupid isn't generally one of them. repost: ---------------- I don't tend to blame the seti project guys because I understand that they're working on a shoestring budget, but the decision to upgrade boinc versions during the most severe outage of the BOINC era is sheer stupidity. You don't introduce new potential points of failure until everything else is stable. How else are you going to be able to tell where problems come from? You don't introduce a new version of any software before you assess the potential impact on your user base. Sorry, but the seti team made a stupid decision in this case. Not because of low budgets, not because of being overworked, but because of very bad decision making and defective logic. ------------------- Xaak Team Starfire World BOINC Join Us IRC Chat: irc://irc.teamstarfire.net:6667/team_starfire XaaK |

Thanks, Xaak, for echoing our thoughts, from TSWB. Since we are a new team comprised of long time DC folk, most all of run optimized apps. This has affected most of our team. Hopefully tomorrow, the Seti staff can sit down and see what can be done with fixing the BOINC Server code's 5.09 anonymous platform breakage. No one called anyone stupid except for you James. Actually, you called him stupip so we can forgive you. ;-) It was the action taken which wasn't very smart, but I tend to do stupid things like that too. Join Team Starfire BOINC Chat |

/snip James, you're not helping your cause out much with a post like that. ;-) While Xaak's tone may be a bit on the harsh side, his message is clear. Why on earth would the project introduce a new version of the server code in the middle of the The Biggest SETI Outage Ever (TBSOE) is beyond me. I've known Xaak for many years now, and we both are quite passionate in our DC hobby, having spent several 10's of thousands of dollars between us on hardware and electricity in the past few years alone. For us to expect that common practices in the IT business be adhered to is fair to me. Team Starfire World BOINC IRC- irc//irc.teamstarfire.net:6667/team_starfire |

You might get a bigger I-rate if you'd learn to spell. I hear a pot calling a kettle black. |

You come off very insulting for a supposedly tolerent person. If you have to tell others you are... (But let's not go there :-) ) There's a big difference between calling someone stupid or insulting someone directly (as you did to me), and calling a decision stupid. The fact is it was a stupid decision, regardless of how brilliant the people were who made it. And yes, I'm a volunteer and donor of both computer time and funds directly. As such I'm not getting paid to tollerate this situation, and I choose to volunteer and donate elsewhere until this team gets their act together. And, for your info, I have a great life. I have opinions too and I'll voice them as I please. :-) Xaak Team Starfire World Boinc Join Us IRC Chat: irc://irc.teamstarfire.net:6667/team_starfire XaaK |
