The other threads were getting a little crowded so I thought I'd spawn a new one focussed on answering the following question:

The community have isolated the problem in obtaining new work to an issue with custom apps and the app_info file so, which of the following is true?

1. The move to harmonise Seti with the BOINC source tree has uncovered a 'bug' in the app_info file which previously had gone unnoticed (app_info needs work)

2. The move to harmonise Seti with the BOINC source tree has uncovered a 'bug' in the BOINC source which only becomes apparent when app_info files are in use (BOINC source needs work).

Discuss.

Neither; due to extreme hardware issues since the demise of Kryten many months ago, many pertinent pieces of equipment required to make SETI@Home what it is today have been failing in turn... Server after Server; one by one, they have been crashing and needing replacement.

When constructing Bruno to replace Kryten; they also used a different OS than what Kryten had. Thus; more programming was needed to streamline Bruno. Said streamlining is still occurring.

Next, Koloth, and Galileo... So, it is a plethora of failures on multiple levels that currently has the entire SETI@Home crew dancing like their on hot coals...

[EDIT:]

On further thought; with the above in mind, if I had to pick one of your choices, I'd modify your second choice to read as: "2. The move to harmonize Seti with the Optimized Chicken Application has uncovered a 'bug' in the SETI@Home Server(s) which only becomes apparent when app_info files are in use (Thus; the Server(s) still need streamlining...)." With these edits noted; Eric, Matt, and crew are still streamlining.

[/EDIT.

Sincerely,

I would say that since All versions of Boinc were working with the App_info and with the servers in Berkeley, since all this was working before the failure 18 days ago, the problem is most likely in the servers at Berkeley.

Point 2. seems the likely root cause to me, but I haven't had time to try to find it in the source. I do expect it will be in (or triggered by) the changes made for alternate platform support.

Well it's quite simple... the second one is true... boinc introduced a bug which is fix now in 5.9.11....

But that's not the reason for no new work ... i'd say a combination of "clever" updating the boinc server software while having not enough issues handling a more than one week long outage...

No further comments on that ...

My $0.02:

3. The BOINC developers are building in some new features, perhaps in particular to give better support to 64-bit platforms in the upcoming BOINC v5.10.x range. To enable this, they have made changes to both the server code and the client code, with regard to the specification of the app_info.xml file. Both the server code and the client code are in beta and subject to change - see for instance the changelog posted on the BOINC dev boards detailing the differences between BOINC v5.9.10 and v5.9.11

I suspect that SETI have deployed some beta v5.10-compatible server code, and found out the hard way that it isn't backward compatible with v5.8.x clients and earlier.

Is anyone in a position to test optimised applications with BOINC v5.9.11 (nothing earlier will do), and report back?

The Make your own client software page which describes the anonymous platform mechanism and app_info.xml has not been updated to reflect BOINC changes for alternate platform. We know that BOINC 5.9.x needs at least a <platform> field added.

I think this was fixed in 5.9.11. I removed the <platform> line and it's working fine.

Working fine, as in collecting work without needing the 'ghost' trick? If so, BINGO.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. No, 5.9.11 does not fix the current download problem.

5.9.11 fixes the previous problem, which required adding a <platform> line to app_info.xml.

Edit: This is the problem that 5.9.11 appears to fix:

Well since Matt is on vacation, Who is going fix the download problem?
I changed My mind and did a temp fix with mixed results I now have work for between 1-18 days(PC1=1 day, PC2=4, PC3=18, PC4=6 and PC5=3) and I'm using the optimized app, I had to make a copy of the files on each PC and put them in their own folder, then I reset each PCs project so that I could download new WUs and the stock app(I reset as Boinc would try and download the 2.2B app If I didn't), Once I downloaded the stock app and files I copied the needed files into their own folder(separate from the 2.2B files), Next after the downloading was completed I stopped Boinc, Then I Copied the 2.2B files back to the Seti folder and restarted Boinc.

I also had to move a power strip to another nearby circuit(Outlet in the front room) as I had a temporary power failure after all the Seti gymnastics were done for a bit, I've got a 100Amp Electric service, I may need a 200Amp though.
