Warning: This is a rant. For those of a delicate disposition, or are not rant-resistant please turn away and read other threads like "How do you 'go' in space?" and the like. Apologies in advance

Alright, here goes: I think astrology is the most stupidest "science" that was ever to be even considered by human minds.

It's like alchemy, a sham science, it doesn't work.

But still, people believe it
I quote from this article:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,252781,00.html

"In one European study about 25 percent of people said they thought astrology was very scientific. But when the question was rephrased to horoscopes that fell to about 7 percent."

Outrageous.

And according to Astrology-online.com, I'm a pisces. It says that I'm supposed to "posess a gentle, patient, malleable nature". But considering what I'm doing now (and what I did to the ants in the living room), do I seem to "posess a gentle, patient ,malleable nature"?!?! noooooo.

And I don't understand how those cluttered clusters of constellations [if you can see through air and light pollution] look like fish, a bull, twins or whatever, seems like a connect the dots numbered wrong. (The only exception I make is Orion, but it's not an astrological sign)

Complete Balderdash.

And now to go off-rant:
Stonehenge(don't know how to paste photos)

[Insert photo here]

what is it? neolithic calendar? monument? Alien Landing pad? always wondered, but never really found out

Apologies again

I tend to agree with you regarding astrology, although I have had friends that really believed in it. I think it is a bunch of hogwash.

As for Stonehenge, I'm not sure, but I think this is funny.

(and thanks to Matthew L. for posting it in the Daily Funnies thread in the Cafe)

Well I see the constellations such as the Dippers Orion and scorpio. You have to know when and where to look. As during the early evening, you can see Venus to the west before sunset. (I believe its venus)

Speaking of Stars...where is a good free interactive star chart or something I can see that has real time viewing or whatever.

How to post a picture!

1. Find the picture somewhere on the internet

2. Right click the picture and view "Properties"

3. Copy the internet address. It must end in .jpg or .gif or something like that.

4. put in these tags on either side of the picture address like this!

[img]Internet address of pic[/img]

here is an example with the SETI logo on the top of this page

Here you can see the code but i disabled it by putting in a dot in the first IMG tag

[.img]http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/logo7.gif[/img]

here is the picture

How to make a link or internet address "Clickable"

1. Find the Internet address or URL you want and copy it

2. You need to use these tags to make the address "Clickable". To display the tags they are disabled with a dot so you can see the tags!

[.url= Internet address] DESCRIPTION[/url]

Here is an example. I will disable it by putting in a dot in the first tag

[.url=http://setiathome.berkeley.edu]The SETI@home website[/url]

And this is how it looks without the dot in the first tag

The SETI@home website

Or you could display the address again in the "Description". Again i have disabled it with a dot so you can see the code!

[.url=http://setiathome.berkeley.edu]http://setiathome.berkeley.edu[/url]

This is how it will look when posted without the dot in the tag!

There used to be an interactive sky map at www.skyandtelescope.com, but it is no longer available. Try skytonight.com

Astrology is a massive scam. It's a ridiculous, unconvincing load of complete bollocks.

There's an excellent debunking of the myth here

Katherine, Astrology is not science, no more that my mother is a "Domestic Technician"!

Astrology is Mythology and my mother is a house wife!

If there is any scientific basis for Astrology, it would be in the fact that the moon goes around the earth every 28 days and that is probably why you went off in a rant in the first place. The moon effects your "Cycle" as a woman.

Stonehenge is 5000 years old and one of modern mankind's greatest achievements.
It had nothing to do with Astrology. That is just the new age travelers that turn up there every year to smoke cannabis that might have given you that impression!

It was built to measure time and the seasons but it was built with incredible Astronomical precision. A credit to the people that built it.

No one here wants to hear this, I couldn't believe it myself. I'm in the information technology block classes at my high school. We currently have a professor from a local community college who comes down and teaches us macromedia flash. One day I had a photo of a galaxy as the wallpaper on my computer. Our professor came over started talking to me about astrology, he asked me if I had a telescope, and he went on to talk abut the sun. A COLLEGE PROFESSOR DIDN'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ASTRONOMY AND ASTROLOGY!

Taking Astrology serious is worth of about 1/2 of a microsecond of brain time.

Astronomy is the study of Stella Facts, Astrology is the study of stellar crap..pure and simple.

There are actually thirteen zodiac constellations that the Sun appears to track through, Ophiuchus being the unused one, and I believe that in total the planets (visible) track through 15, but with the invisible worlds it raises again, but I am not too sure of the number and I beleive this varies over time due to perturbations of the various planet orbits and the fact that Pluto and mercury have highly eccentric orbits.

It's total ballderdash..to use an old polite English phrase.

Yep, but ppl who believe it won't get anything out of your post. Please be more concise and explain what any of this has to do with it.

Well, in his defense, just because he is a "college professor" doesn't mean much. I'm sure many can relate to having had professors/instructors that were severely lacking in one discipline or another. I had a teacher for a couple of the BS psychology classes that I was required to take that didn't know simple math. The woman had a PhD and couldn't multiply decimals. This was at a large university.

He isn't alone with his astrology versus astronomy confusion. I would wager that 50% of the population doesn't know the difference. Yes, I'm that cynical. This should come as no surprise though. Astrology is in every grocery store checkout line and is on page A2 of the daily paper. Astronomy, for the general masses, is just random blurbs on the news: a little remote control car on Mars, eclipses (how do they happen again?), and, at the most, perhaps a naked-eye comet (what do they signify?).

As a guy nearly done w/ a Ph.D. in Math and concentrating on Math Education, I am not at all surprised by a Ph.D. in Psychology being unable to multiply decimals. I imagine many of you would be shocked if you knew just how weak the mathematical knowledge of many of your peers in many (but not all) of your countries truly is.
(Note: not being surprised is not to be equated with accepting it.)
Rather than call the professor bad, you should have left it at how one who has is good/excellent in one field can be severely lacking in another. The days of being able to be a Renaissance Man (person) are LONG past. Can any of us claim to be even close?

With all that said, a friend said about a year ago that he cannot completely discredit astrology because of the nature vs. nurture debate. If environment can affect us, why can't the month in, or astrological sign under, which we were born? Note that the friend is also working on a Ph.D. in Math. So, try de-bunking the connection to nature vs. nurture, because I had no immediate answer.

Astrology doesn't even deserve our consideration. It's an entirely human construct. It's pure fiction, and as such, is suitable for entertainment purposes only - in which case, its use is justified. Otherwise, it's total BS. I'd never waste my time reading a horoscope - let alone pay for it! People who believe in astrology irritate me. I'm a very difficult person to irritate, mind you!! haha

Please define human construct and then try to determine whether many different things are or are not human constructs.

I agree with that completely - and I'm sure you and I could compile a long list of examples... ( sciences, mathematics, philosophy... etc...) but astrology, to me, seems almost like a form of animism. We're attributing near-sentience to not only extremely distant but unrelated/unconnected celestial bodies. I believe the human condition is defined by the individual. Horoscopes are like a placebo for the emotions. If it "works" internally, of course, the resulting benefits are both tangible and valid - but not for the supernatural reasons many believe. I do agree with you though - and without getting bogged down in philosophy, it's interesting to consider that most of what we "know" is, in fact, second-hand knowledge

that would have worked if you hadn't stopped me
