I think, that alien's will not contact us in close future, maybe children of our children will talk to them when they will be old. So about 2090-2120, not ealier

A dialogue is very unlikely. We have heard no one out to 100 light years. Unless a civilization comes "on-line" in the radio/electronic sense in this time frame on a close-in planet, it will be next to impossible. Even at 4 to 10 light years it would be difficult to "chat". I think that the best result would be just to know someone is out there and maybe approximately where.

don't forget that They use other technology, language and even They may not speak by sound's, so there 'll be a problem to understand them. I think that They propably are more inteligent than humans so maybe they 'll send us "ambasadors" with gift's like new technology that we can use to contact them and understand what are they talking to us

Hi folks! I have been reading this thread with interest and will say that chances are not big at all by finding ET signals, not to mention a contact for the next couple of centuries. For the actual level of technology it is not possible to do/expect more.
Mr. Carl Sagan had a clear idea of ET civilizations: he could not imagine all that immensity of space without a trace of life. The problem is the size of the universe itself: it makes it nearly impossible to interact. What kind of technology could sort that distance out, making a chat between us and the other end of our galaxy possible? 500 years ago nobody could dream of an A-380: Europe and America were two different, unknown and distant worlds.
I wish I could see a milestone of this size (contacting ET) during my staying on planet Earth, but I would be quite happy if I could see how an international astronaut crew takes off and travels through our Solar System heading to planet Mars, spending some weeks there for research and exploration and returning safely back home. Maybe installing in Mars some antennas equipments would speed up the issue? Hope having/being into good healht for that moment! We should organize a BBQ with all SETI@home crunchers for that day and send some invitations to ET from Arecibo, just in case!!!!!! LOL Cheers.

I had to come back and modify the BBCode tag for a url link. If you have a look (maybe it already happened to you) there is a sign which is not neccesary: when you write the BBCode in order to embed a link, drop the last / at the end of the www adress, for example, google.com/ The webmaster should take actions. Cheers!

When do you think ET will contact us?

Hopefully not until we are ready. I doubt it would be in our best interests if seriously advanced ET's dropped in to say hello to us while we are in such a primitive stage in our evolution.

I honestly think ET has already been here, more visits by ET's in the past but still around today.
Maybe it's just from watching to much TV, show's like Roswell really hit the spot of my thinking

If there is an ET civilisation out there that are smart enough to know we exist, or knows anything about us,
it's highly unlikely that, given the state of modern humanity's affairs, they will make contact with us. Can you imagine their technology in the wrong hands?
When we get our house in order, which may be 100's, thousands of years from now, they just may introduce us to the club.
We have a long way yet to evolve before we will be remotely acceptable.

Hello, I am just curious on what people's thoughts are. Some say that people from Earth are already in contact with ET etc.. But regardless of that, when do you personally THINK that we will make official contact with ET? Any guesses? Guesses dont have to be based on facts.... just random guesses... I think, maybe between 2010 and 2040.. :)

I think that the form of any official contact will be when we can locate a giant radio telescope in Lagranian orbit, the moon or elsewhere in deep space. It would have to be capable of picking up 50,000 to 100,000 watt communications on the alien planet at distances of 1000 light years or more. Perhaps it could be "steered" to monitor those planets that we think we have found.

There could also be an intentional narrowband beacon from these or greater distances. They would have little or no reason to be sure that that Earth was inhabited. They may notice oxygen and then assume that life here on earth was a possibility--hence the beacon and putative welcome message.

The "Contact" would be one way only; no chatting with far distant civilizations.
We would also need the best techniques of signal processing and some really good thinking on how to recognize and decode a message from another civilization.

I feel that it is highly improbable that we will ever be able to achieve contact with any intelligent life. I hope that I am wrong and that future observations will yield contact with ET.

Does power and score always mean the most ?

I have a WU running on my PC which at more than 50% completed (it has locked again at 100.000%) is having the following values:

Spike power: 21.01695 (score -0.27949)
Gaussian power -1 fit -1 (score 1.551340)
Pulse power 9.197070 period 4.404019 (score 0.990155)

Nothing special here except for the power and fit for the Gaussian - minus 1.

I do not think I have seen this before and it shows up in the graph.
The curve is running at top, then falls down in a bump and then comes back again.

Anyone there who knows what this means? It is a pulse there, but the graph is "negative" or inverted in shape.

Also a spike of 2.19 in my other running WU.

I always enjoy your posts. I would be happy if the CETI people at Berkley could assure us that promising signals were identified and then looked at and analyzed. With the no info or comment on the competing array at Berkley it worries me that we are not doing the best job possible.

Regards to all,

Bill

For an actual physical contact between humans and extraterrestrial intelligent life forms: I put my chips on "never". (Paging Dr. Fermi)

We are simply too far away. We are incubated by space and time. Maybe this is a good thing as it keeps us from eating each other.

Receiving an extraterrestrial signal that is clearly an intelligent source? Pretty damn good. Once the gates open, many more will be found. Remember, however, that these signals will be from (our perspective) ancient civilizations. Perhaps this will prompt a new discipline such as "astro-archeoloy" or such.

As soon as the intergalactic quarantine around this system is lifted. Should happen as soon as some species (aside from white mice and dolphins) show intelligence. :)

...when do you personally THINK that we will make official contact with ET?

Well, they are here already - and they are called hungarians! If you do not believe me, check "If the Univers is Teeming with aliens... Where is everybody?" by Stephen Webb. There are 50 selected explanations to this Ferm's paradox.

I recommend that for everybody wasting their computer time (like me do) for shaking just noise (and probably nothing but noise) from the sky. I was shocked, anyway, about author's own explanation - the last of them, #50. When reading, do not cheat - read #1 - #49 first and then you may drop through Eratosthene's sieve down to the reality... :-)
