Message 567170 - Posted: 14 May 2007, 14:59:40 UTC - in response to Message 567162.

In fact, yes, but remember that a thing are the work units, and another, a result.
Work units are RAW data, preprocesed from the tapes, and results are the result obtained from that data (as less, I think so. MATT, HELP ;) ).

I'm not Matt, but I hope I can help.

The workunit is, in fact, the actual data ready to download: since the tip was posted on NC this morning, I've been able to look at the server directories and download the WUs I've been allocated. So the raw telescope data has been split, and a reasonable buffer built up: I read the "Results ready to send 342,172" as representing 'spare' work not yet allocated to a host, unlike the "Results in progress 1,341,312" which have been assigned - even if not yet downloaded and crunched.

The 'results' are basically just a BOINC database instruction to download a specific (already existing) WU data file and process it. Very little work to do there, and in fact most of it has been done already. That's why results which reached deadline during Thumper's absence could be re-issued - the WU data was already there and logged in the Master Science Database.

Please, keith, excuse me, but I read the post too fast :(

Ok, guys, the problem is:
Thumper (the master science database server) has been replaced and is up and running again.

There are huge problems with upload/download most probably because the servers are being clobbered with requests.

So please have patience. And please let your BOINC manager(s) do what they are made to, to contact when it's time. Please don't hit the Update button, your uploads/downloads will get through eventually.

Thank you.

So, don't click the button!

As I said, The problems will be resolved soon.

Hello everybody,

I receive WU, slow, but I receive byt using the proxy ( to DL ).
My problem is the deadline !!!
It is imposible to upload.
What shall happen with all the WU who are overtime due to connection problems ???
I not mean about a few WU, but about hundreds. In near future, it wil be
about 1000 results to send !!!

I saw somewhere earlier that the deadlines will be extended, and you will still get credit!
Meantime... my graph for network activity looks like a heart monitor in the cardiac care emergency room. Faint blips every now and again.

When we finally figure it all out, all the rules will change and we can start all over again.

Uploads/Downloads are slowly happening. I finally uploaded 2 WU's and got 1.

All right.
If you see the graph...
(thx keith ;) )

you can see that now, there is some network activity (near 5 k paquets/sec).
This means that the info is reaching the servers, so, there isn't a real deadline (only an overload of the net).

So, it's probably that all of us can get/put on the FTP server the results, but very, very, very slow.

'Till now, what happenned?... No idea. Just wait Matt or another of the investigators to report anything.

PD: Anybody noted that Matt (or somebody directly implicated with project) hasn't report anything today? There's only a possibility: LOTS OF WORK.
Please, be patient. ;)

Most are green and orange now. I just came home for lunch, and set to get new work, and got 1 WU, since i've got a lot of other work right now, so the work is flowing, its just gonna be hit and miss as they try to keep up with the huge demand from all the computers pounding them. :-) Patience is the keyword for today. :-)

My guess is that they are working on the problems.

Looks like that yes.. By the way.. i just got one result now!
Speed 4,5KB/s .. I have had 5 results it has been trying to get since yesterday. And one got downloaded now! I have set the manager to not get more work since i guess i only spam the servers if i try to get more.. The next work unit it will try to get in 2minutes.. And next after that 2 hours.. So lets see what happens :D

The status page says that thumper is down now.... But i got my result anyway.. Since thumper is not involved in sending out the results.. Download of second WU seems to fail... But got one! :D wee ;)

That is Thumper, resurrected in it's second incarnation. It only got a brain transplant, it's still the same Thumper.

And my qualified guess is that Eric is working on it right now.

At the moment I believe Matt is putting thumper into the server closet, since it sounds like an airplane engine (it was in the main SETI@home lab over the weekend, I think).

Ah, I suspected it could be something like that. Would not like you guys to get thumping headaches :-) Hope you all had a good w/e.

Great job, guys, with getting the 'new' Sun Fire up and going so quickly.

Did Sun allow you to keep the 'old' (broken) Sun Fire or do they want it back? The first one wasn't a final production product, but rather just one of their early 'testing prototypes'? It's physical dimensions, backplanes, etc, are different from the final Sun Fire production product?

Could Sun be sweet talked out of a replacement 'old prototype' board for it? If they even have any spares, that is. Fix the 'old' Thumper and it is a secondary MSD. Grateful to Sun already, but really -- in their corporate eyes, donating their 'old prototype' hardware, which won't sell to 'real customers' anyway, is just about tax deduction and publicity. I recall having seen, on Sun's website, that S@H is powered by Sun's machines. They sure don't seem to have any problem using S@H for their own purpose (publicity). Nothing wrong with that, of course.

If they cant fix old thumper

if they must send it back send it back without cpu's,mem + HDD's

We can always find an replacement MB / chassis that can use old thumpers memory ,cpu's and put removed HDD's from new thumper in this box

I see another "component drive comming up"

Ps
Mat dont strain your self on that server it must be heavy

G'day Team,

There's still some grief at my end. The new server has files queued on my BOINC Manager and has been attempting to download them for ages and ages. Messages keep appearing that say the following over and over and over. It's been going on for yonks now - any ideas as to what if anything I need to be doing - or is it just a waiting game? Cheers ...... Chris
