Message 565131 - Posted: 11 May 2007, 14:35:17 UTC - in response to Message 565115.

Should something about this be put on the home page?

I think this is a good idea. It would probably do a lot of good to announce new versions right on the home page so everyone knows.

Which Home page

When did you last take a look at the BOINC Home page ... that is the only appropriate place for that info. I agree, it would be helpful if "they" (the BOINC team) posted the latest version (link) there.

I don't know about that... I think if a piece of software utilizes another piece of software (even if it's not created by the same company), they could still announce newer versions. I've seen this on many websites.

Oh, and to answer your question, I checked the BOINC web page before I posted that, just to find out if they announced new versions on their home page (they don't). I'm very aware that BOINC has it's own web page, but that doesn't mean everyone else knows it (many still think BOINC is just an upgrade to SETI) nor does it mean that individual projects can't help make announcements to encourage everyone to upgrade.

My update is done now. I supposed the Boinc software would do upgrades of its own, when a new stable version would be available. Either you implement an automatic update in some future release (minimum would be to tell the user that an update is available) or you should make a sign on the main page that is showing the actual stable version. I would be satisfied with each of that solutions.

If you check the message log (at least on the newer versions of BOINC), they DO send out a message that a newer version is available.

Several reasons for not auto-updates are:
Some business servers that are allowed to run BOINC can not have unknown updates just happening without intervention.

5.x has had Proxy issues so there are many still using 4.x for this reason.

Not all OS's are supported by the Berkeley team, so some 3rd party items would probably break.

there should be an option in the client to auto update to the latest official update or not, just like there is options to autoupdate most other applications and OSs.

There's a good idea. And it can be disable by default, or perhaps it can be an option at the end of the first "Attach to project" wizard (it could/should also be user configurable later via some option in the pull-down menus) asking "Would you like BOINC to auto-update itself with every new release?"

The code can be left out for OSes and third party code that doesn't support it/might break it.

No. It has nothing to do with what we were discussing at the end of this thread.

If you read the posts from Matt Lebofsky (the one who starts every thread in the Tech Forum), you'll understand why you can't get any work.

I've not seen an option in XP to upgrade automatically to Vista.

Would you want to if you could? 8-)

Your point is understood, but there's a huge difference between BOINC and the Windows OS. One difference is that BOINC is offered for free while Windows isn't.

I've seen Vista, it's visually compelling. It's also the biggest piece of nagware I've ever seen. It takes a lot more "computer" before it does any useful work.

As a general rule, I don't like software that self-updates. I want to be aware of the changes so that if there is some impact, I know where to look.

Very understandable. There's many people out there with the same opinion. That's why you could always disable (or it should be disabled by default) the Auto-Update of BOINC, if it were to get such a feature.

Others, who prefer to take the lazy route and have everything update for them, could enable it.

To do so you would have to trust Windoze with a credit card since XP to VISTA is not quite free ;-D

Message 565333 - Posted: 11 May 2007, 19:59:02 UTC - in response to Message 564732.

The replacement science database server from Sun was last seen in Sacramento. That bodes well for being in the Bay Area and possibly in our hands sometime tomorrow. You know the drill on that by now.

I've been basically spending most of my time pushing several machines into near retirement. Both koloth and kryten are sitting idle right now - all their services, cronjobs, etc. have been moved elsewhere. Once we determine we no longer need their excess CPU for the big recovery next week they'll be put to sleep. Jeff is working on kang. You may have noticed some of my tweaking has resulted in bogus information on the server status page (or no page at all!). That should be pretty much cleared up now.

Well, that's pretty much the end of my work week. Thanks for hangin' in there.

Hi Matt,

Please, is it possible to place a post in read only where you can write the evolution of the situation ???

Everyone write and have suggestion. Very nice. It show how many persons support you. But I am sure there are a lot of people who only are interrested about the evolution. I mean, recept, start, test, integration of the new.. I fact ONLY technical news !!!

I have not the time to read all the discussion. My team and me are only interrested about the technical situation. There are other forums to discuss !!!
I hope you will find the time to read this. and act it

We are with all the team

To whom this may concern:

I have been running SETI for a while now, and have noticed that the server does not want to update my work processed. Is there something wrong with the system there? I have been trying now for the past two weeks with negative results on getting new work. Please help! Thanks.

Hey marsin!
Any reason you had to spam 3 or 4 message threads with the same plea? Those of us who want technical news would prefer not to see you ask the same question in four places.

Can anybody say 'Idiot'?? Sure you can. It's posts like that that make it harder to glean the useful information from the thread, no?

One very good "trick" of automated Windows Update is to reboot the machine regardless of any long running jobs!

All good insane stupidness in the extreme!!

this is why it is always a good idea to turn the Windows "auto update" feature (! - I call it a "bug"...) OFF as soon as you install Windows. (whatever version!) (it is on by default, something that BG will burn in [appropriate religion's place of eternal punishment] for...) I always take the "custom update" route when I do manual Win updates. (and refuse IE7 every time...) I also refuse anything to do with "CDRM" which is "copyright rights management".
