When I've setup other people's computers to run BOINC, I *always* set it to run only when user is inactive. I also set it up as a process so that it runs if no one is logged on.

The minimal amount of time BOINC looses due to not running while user is active is trivial. And this eliminates any question (valid or otherwise) about BOINC interfering with the user. I find this is especially helpful with folks who are not computer savvy.

I also lower the percentage of CPU usage allowed to something less than 100%. Especially if you can hear the cooling fan @ 100%.

SETI isn't the main project they usually choose to process, but that is ok with me. I attach them to SETI with a very low SHARE (10 or less vice 100) so that SETI will process if other project has no work or hiccups.

Responsivness depends on how tight RAM is. For some projects, the 512MB machines may not be very responsive if you run always. The best thing to do is to try it to see what happens. If it doesn't work, either buy more RAM, or limit the crunching to when the user is not active.

It is possible to change these settings on a per machine basis if that makes sense.

It won't make any difference.
Even when set to "Run always" when other programmes start doing things, Seti stops processing till the other programmes stop.
When doing word processing, emails, checking ot the internet the CPU spends most of it's time doing nothing.
