And please remember that the staff at the space lab at Berkeley which runs this project also have a life outside the lab. Matt Lebofsky is working parttime at the lab and is a musician in the other part of his worktime, he is not supposed to be on duty for this project 24/7/365. Eric is not supposed to be at the lab on Fridays, but he and Jeff worked in their sparetime Friday and Saturday to get Thumper up and running. That the connection went is only bad luck, but as said, they do actually have a private life, they don't live in the lab and they are not supposed to be available 24/7/365! So please have the patience to give these brilliant people a chance to get to work today to get the connection fixed. Thank you. Exactly, I would be having an elec. bill for crunching seti, but I'm not crunching seti. They're doing the best they can! They are only a few people (three or five people from what I'm told). They even came in on their day off to get things running again. Can't you cut them some slack? Your electric bill in minor compared to what they're doing. Or is that all you can think of: yourself. yep, my machines, my connection, my elec. bill. If they are going to run a service of this magnitude, have decent machines and a decent connection. Hopefully something worthwhile and decent comes along soon to the boinc infrastructure... This is another misconception. The whole idea behind BOINC is to make distributed computing projects possible for those without a huge budget. Sure, it'd be fairly easy to get better than 99.99% uptime, and a whole bunch of us here know exactly how to do just that. You simply buy twice as many servers as you need, you keep spare routers, you provision multiple connections to the net, you buy a big stack of batteries, and you have a couple of generators, either of which can carry the full load. In other words, you throw money at the problem. Anyone who thinks that a BOINC project requires 100% availability should read this paper, especially section 2.1. SETI does not promise that they'll always have work -- and they don't ask people to build computers just for SETI, or to run them "just to make clocks." Your willingness to go above and beyond is laudable, but when you go beyond like this there is always a risk that there won't be enough work for your contribution. I'm not upset because my machines are running when they'd be running otherwise. ID: 567232 ·

People, among others Tony (Mmciastro, now Astro), asked for ways to help financially out to the project because of all their obsolete hardware and continuous outages, so I found a post by Matt Lebofsky where he posted the link to the donation site, so I started a thread linking to it and asked people to donate. And then a little later the green stars were implemented and that really took off. And now Pappa, who came by, and I are trying to help out where we can. First, let me acknowledge that we're *WAY* off topic here... Actually, and to also disagree with an earlier post of yours, UPS would probably take those six trailers for Chicago over to the nearest railroad intermodal loading facility, where they would be put on a train for Chicago. In the SF area, there are two possibilities: They can give them to BNSF Railway, which will take them southeast through San Bernadillo, I knew San Bernadillo was wrong, but it hit at 4:30 a.m. the next morning that I meant San Bernardino. northern Arizona and New Mexico, far northern Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois, ending up at Willow Springs, IL. Not only is the railroad cheaper than paying all those drivers (and the number of people willing to drive long-distance is rapidly dwindling; most would rather stay close to home and spend time with the family), it's also much more fuel-efficient and less polluting. And as long as UPS delivers the trailers to the railroad by the agreed-upon time every day, the railroad will be pretty reliable about getting them to the other end on a specified schedule. I'm not saying that UPS may not use the train occasionally, but the vast majority of UPS travels by truck. While wandering the country as a big-rig driver, especially on I-40, (Barstow, CA to Oklahoma City, OK - 3 round trips, & one more west-bound run) which parallels BNSF's route that you're talking of, I've noted many trains carrying "pigs" (piggy-backed truck trailers) and I've never seen either a FedEx or a UPS trailer on one such train - many other carriers were noted, though (All from the competition, though - I never noted the carrier I worked for... [C.R. England]) Agreed that it would be more fuel-efficient and less polluting, but they don't do it that way! UPS drivers don't drive the whole (for example) SF to Chicago route - typically they would drive to (say) Sparks, Nv, and return to SF (with different trailers). A team (two drivers) would take a sleeper cab tractor, and continue the trip from Sparks to Salt Lake City, UT and return the next day. This would continue all the way to Chicago... the driver(s) getting relieved at either 8-10 or 16-20 hour intervals (depending on whether a single or a team is driving) I worked for the air transport part of UPS... (specifically: loading planes) The Santa Fe Railway (a few years before it merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF) rerouted its mainline to go around the Willow Springs facility for UPS. They wouldn't do that unless they expected a LOT of business from UPS which would make them a LOT of money. Trains of UPS trailers were and still are the hottest on the railroad. UPS trailers move by rail every day. You probably saw them and didn't know it; they don't necessarily have UPS markings all over them (better security for the cargo if it's harder to guess what's inside). And yes, yard mule sounds good. Whatever they're called, and whether or not they're street legal, the ones I'm thinking of don't even have full size cabs, just a little glass box with a seat and a steering wheel (or so it appears). I've tried it, and I must say I'm not a stout (double chocolate or otherwise) fan. For beer I'll stick with a Bud or Bud Select. Sorry it took so long to read your reply, Philadelphia. I made that comment because, as I was reading the boards that day, I noticed a lot of people complaining about the fact that they are having to wait so long for the broken SETI computer to be repaired or replaced. I have been running SETI for 8 years now and this is one of only a few times that I recall them ( the SETI volunteers ) having an issue that took so much time to fix. Those folks keeping watch over the project work hard to make sure that we have a steady supply of work units to crunch. Yet, instead of thanking them for their hard work and dedication, some folks were just going on about how they're average is going to fall because they cant get W/U's ID: 569814 ·
