Message 564668 - Posted: 10 May 2007, 18:30:54 UTC - in response to Message 564665.

Hey guys. Got my systems waiting for the work. As it takes nothing from me to wait for the work and really no skin off my nose. Thanks for all your efforts on this!

I wish a few more people would have your attitude about it. It seems some people think that if they can't get work, the world is going to end or there is a financial loss of some kind on their part.

I'll never understand what the big deal is.

LOL...

Amen to that!

My hosts have just told me they're all willing to wait until the cows come home to get another SAH result to chew on (if that's what it takes), and in the mean time have plenty of work to keep the CPU pegged at 100%. :-)

A couple of my slugs told me, "Yeah, right! I couldn't deal with a SAH right now, even if I wanted to!" ;-)

Umm... yes, Sun Microsystems HQ is down in Silicon Valley... but (as I understand it...) the System is being shipped from the factory, which is in Tennesee! (probably by truck...)

As for backup system(s) read the relevent threads... lack of $$ is the primary reason there...

No - ordinary consumer-grade computers would freak out at the loads that SETI's servers routinely handle. (Home computer builder...)

Just ignore the idiot - he has no clue about which he speaks. FWIW, his use of the title Rev. would be illegal in any decent country. ;)

I can definitely understand how someone with a purpose-built crunching farm would get a little antszy about work -- after all, you can easily figure 1 to 2 KWH/day per high-performance system.

... but SETI never asked them to build a farm specifically for SETI, and the machines could be turned off to save power, or they could run another project (like Einstein) with a low resource share for just this kind of event.

Personally, my crunchers are all on anyway -- for example, I have a dedicated machine for web stats that also pops out a work unit every 170,000 seconds or so.

Timing ?

FedEx transports a truckload ca. 4000 miles across the USA on the ground ? That is crazy, i think. Wouldn't it be cheaper for FedEx to lift that cargo onto a plane, fly the load to a CA Airport and deliver from there ? I know, we are not waiting for a complete truckload.

The odds are fairly good that it's going at least part way by train, not truck.

Ground transportation is cheaper than air, especially for heavy items, and I'll bet this little puppy is heavy.

I hear Ya Ned, I just re-aim the PCs to other projects when Seti is like this, So It's not a big deal and It shouldn't be either.

Without hdd's ? That's appr. 77kg max. Not to heavy for air transport. I actually have no idea about transportation costs in and across the USA. Can anyone give some examples (Something like: what costs 100kg (220 pounds) load from New York to L.A. or same load from Seattle to New Orleans ?)

Have you considered an ethernet modem? Those are available now.[/quote]

Have you not considered there are still some out here using Windows 95 and at least one I know of on Windows 3.11, never mind the fact that here in the UK BT still have large tracks of the country on dial-up. What difference will an ethernet modem make to send/recieve speeds.

I am just an old fuddy duddy I know but are you really that gen'd up. Sorry but somethings need to not just be in the right forum but also correct.

I understand the angle of purposely built systems and getting upset because their idle too, but again, as you said yourself, they did not of their own volition. SETI did not ask for it.

I personally don't believe that their own good will is enough to get mad over. I think there's many more important things to get mad about in life, not a little bit of wasted electricity.

One side plugs into an ethernet port on the computer, and the other plugs into a phone line. You use a web browser to configure it with dialup number, user name, password, etc.

When your computer tries to connect via Ethernet to something "out there" it goes to the modem, and the modem dials-out. It hangs up after some inactivity.

The best thing about these gadgets is that they are completely OS-neutral. The computer thinks it has a really slow hard-wired connection to the net. You can even use these to share a dialup line between several machines.

The reason Mr. Ribbeck is complaining is that BOINC does not always provoke the Windows dialer properly. This bypasses the issue completely.

"In case you don't know the replacement server will arrive on Friday."
You have been saying that for over a week now, With Sun just down the road from you, you could have walked down there picked it up and walked back by now!! I have shut down my systems because of your "it's going to be another day" bull! If it's so important that your asking the public to help you with this program, then why in the hell did you not have a backup system incase this very thing happened?? This is not the first time you lost a server and the folks doing this work have had to set on there ass while you ran around looking for a system to take up the slack!! And the fact that any computer could run your data base and server XX amount of time files to the public means you could have had a cheap home system as a backup to server a time file so folks doing the work would not be waiting for over a week on YOU! all it really needs to do is run the data base that folks log into and get XX amount of work, heck a Max or and old Pentium 200MHz Pro could do that!! It does not have to be a $20,000 SUN system... D'oh O'pps Yup some of us are computer literate and some of us even design and build them for a living! D'oh... Your notebook could do the job, so get a computer on line and get the damn job running..

Yeah I said that.

Wow, You seem to be the kind of person I'd never want to have dealings with.

The good folks at setiathome are working hard to keep things running on a very limited budget. The way you are ranting it sounds like you think they OWE you something. If you don't like it you can always join a different project.
I'm always amazed at how people who contribute spare cpu cycles suddenly thing they own the project rather than are contributing of their free will.

sigh.

24tb? In a few years this is gonna be one HDD..

Remember the times when 20-40 MB hdd was impossible to be filled? How long it took to jump from 120-160MB to 120-160GB? Tens of terabytes is just a few steps ahead.

And knowing FedEx or at least their local drivers, I have to keep an eye on shipments coming here by FedEx as they have gotten lost in the past as there are two parts to the street where I live, One is empty of any buildings and the Other part is where I live that has mobile homes scattered up and down It. Both sections of the road I live on are Bisected by a Freeway, Of course It wasn't like that before the Freeway was built, The Empty section of road should be renamed of course, Maybe then the confusion would end.

Hey, I almost bought a house on a street like that...

I'll answer this (564695) and ned ledd's (564696) at one go...

There are now three buisnesses running under the "FedEx" banner - and they operate in different ways!

1) FedEx (the original) (Logo is navy blue/orange) the air package shipping company
2) FedEx Ground (Logo is light blue/green) As implied, this is a ground shipping company (originally Purolator Courier) that ships everything on trucks, nationwide.
3) FedEx Freight (logo is Navy blue/light blue) Also ships everything by truck, main difference is that this division won't take anything smaller than a freight pallet. (originally Watkins Freight)

The most likely portion of these three for the server to be taking is FedEx Ground... with FedEx Freight the other possibility. The conglomerate was formed by aquisitions of Purolator Courier (Ground) and Watkins Freight Lines (Freight). Ground and Freight are run seperately, BTW

Big rig Trucker...

Nedd, FedEx (any part!) does not ship by train... (they don't own a railroad...)

Oh, Yeah... Urs, depending on route, that's only 2500-3k miles, depending on whether (and where) they routed around the current mid-west floods
