Thanks for the continuing patience and encouraging sentiments since the science database server crashed over a week ago. Still waiting on the server replacement. I think we're all anxious for it to arrive already, but we originally expected it no earlier than late-in-the-day today.

We had the usual database backup outage, in case anybody noticed. Outside of the usual backup/compression of the BOINC database, I fixed the replica server, so that's back up and running again. I also rebooted our Network Appliance which has been complaining about "misconfigurations" as of late, but that didn't seem to help or hurt. We think a bad drive in the system is causing these errors. I then replaced a bad drive in the Snap Appliance so that's back to having two working hot spares (phew). Jeff, Eric, and I also cleaned up the lab. Entropy reigns supreme around here. The table which we sit around and eat lunch was full of miscellaneous screws, heat sinks, empty drive trays, shredded bubble wrap, etc. but not anymore.

No problemo.

It will be ready when it's ready! ;-)

Besides with the trouble they're having getting their new app rolled out at EAH, the extra time mine are spending working for them is far from wasted. :-)

<edit> BTW, would this count as an 'It's in the mail' incident? :-D

No problem here either and thanks for the update! I'll wait as long as it takes.

Is it reasonable to consider an additional BOINC service that holds the database of files to be checked out and in? That way a single server crash would be of little or no consequence.

It may seem that the waiting is the toughest part of the job ... the real challenge will really be to avoid the "adoring crowds" after you get everything back up! Get some rest while you can.

That's what Jocelyn, Sidious, and the other BOINC system servers do. Thumper is the Master Science Database and is really only needed when work is generated from our POV, and of course assimilate the canonical results into. IIRC, they're now considering what they can do to build up a backup for him and how that fits into the budget.

Now.....where is that all important screw I left on the table last night and the heatsink that requires re-installing?? OK, who's tidied up?

This facility is effectively part of the BOINC client. BOINC should run through most outages without issue.

... especially if you crunch more than one project. This effectively spreads the cost of servers and other redundant hardware across all of the projects.

You (Matt) and the rest of the team are doing a fantastic job and hats off to you! When the SUN server arrives, GREAT, but the things you and the team have done in the last few years far outweighs this minor hiccup! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

If memory serves, thumper was donated by Sun and it was early in the E4500 development. Maybe it was an engineering sample??? If so, perhaps Sun would be happy to get the old one back so it can do a post mortem on it, and improve future versions??? Perhaps that's why they provided a replacement??? This is all speculation that is worth about as much as the quality of my kids cleaning efforts. LOL

x4500.

http://www.sun.com/servers/x64/x4500/

E4500 is an ooooooold product. Released 1998.

My guess is that Sun will only replace what they must to get it functioning, and take back any extra and/or failed components.
