By the by, for those of you wondering what to do until the new servers are up and running, there are a number of BOINC projects that could use some help. On the BOINC main page there is a link to some of the other projects available (there are 20 others listed). So if you've a mind to, by all means run other projects. Myself, I have Einstein and Rosetta keeping my box occupied... Matt L, Note that you don't need to wait till you are out of work to update your BOINC client. You can upgrade to the latest version of BOINC with lots of work in your queue. I do it all the time. I've updated from 5.4.11 to 5.8.16/17 (with a few stops in between) in the last few months. The upgrade will shutdown the project(s), upgrade the BOINC client, and then restart. Note that projects that don't checkpoint their progress may go back to the beginning, or to the latest checkpoint on restart, but that's usually OK. It's also a good idea to shutdown BOINC, backup the whole BOINC directory, and then do the upgrade. But using the outage to upgrade isn't a bad idea anyway! Mark |

Well, llike so many here I am also a member almost from the very beginning (1999 sometime), I was inactive long enough to change emails and re-sign up later, but no matter... that's not my point anyway. I am grateful for all the efforts you guys running the show are putting in. THANKS A MIL!!! But what has shocked me about this whole experience is that here we have a large community of well-intending people volunteering cpu time, for a "greater goal", which seems pretty selfless/dedicated no? So how is it possible that so many people do nothing but complain about the technical difficulties, and what's all this talk about detaching permanently?????? SERIOUSLY I see some people whose join date is '99 and yet they are talking of quitting just because there's a few day's outage? There is no question, donating money, time, OR CPU time, is voluntary and (I'm sure) appreciated, and the project would not be what/where it is without all that help, but c'mon people (and I don't mean the majority), stop acting as if this is some paid gaming server where you can demand up-time/work availability as if it is your right. The people working on the problem benefit more than us from the results, so don't think for one second they're not busting their butts trying to make it happen. my 2 cents. |

Modesto, I agree with you. While SETI is down, there are other worthwhile projects one can help like Einstein and Rosetta, as Matt suggested. SETI is a university program with a very limited budget, and the people are doing their best with what they have. Guys, You do an amazing job! I can't imagine anyone not understanding computer failures. If you build it, it will crash, that's just the way it is. Enjoy! TheMadScientist |

Only 1.5 hours to the first stages, the planned outrage, and then they (Matt, Eric, et al) will look forwards to receipt of Thumper's replacement from Sun! It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

all the best and good luck- Well known IT method: When system starts to crash, throw salt over left shoulder, take broomstick and run around a pentagonal path, chanting in hexadecimal from the last two lines of intelligeble code before outage - preferably at or near a full moon. |

The funny thing (at least for me) is never i thought that Matt was giving a distorted view of the project. We know what's happening, The better and The worst so... perfect. :) |

The funny thing (at least for me) is never i thought that Matt was giving a distorted view of the project. I agree, I think it is we that is a bit distorted, that really distorts the distortion. Many of us have made our CPUs chew seti-packets for many years and feel very enthusiastic about the project. I love being part of this magnificant piece of science, we kind of make history each day, where each day brings us closer to what we dream of - thats why btw its silly to quit now. Being this enthusastic, and our favourite project meets a few tough hills, of course we eagerly want to help, many of us would give up expensive hardware posessions to save the project. Hearing about thumped Thumper makes us nervous, because we all know that Seti@home is not in a golden age, loosing this project would hurt. The problem is in my opinion that we don't 100% understand what kind of hardware and software is running all this. For many a computer is a computer and OS is Linux or Windows. Now, for a Seti@Home crew who know these machines down to the smallest chip it must be kind of difficult to not appear unthankful when a guy or girl offers his/her SDRAM or ATX mainboard. Sorry I forgot my point.. -- Øyvind |

Well, that's a shame. While waiting, I signed up for the Climate Prediction project and am happily watching the Earth turning while waiting. Hang in there, Matt and Co, you'll get there in the end - always have! :-) Eva |
