Where? From what I can see, connection data transfer is at about 10% of normal?

I think I saw somewhere in an another thread that they said that if they get a new server similar to Thumper, they'd call it Bambi. Then the resurrected Thumper with new chassis, MB, and processors can be Thumper2.

So Bambi to the list.

The bandwidth reduction is because of less ul/dl traffic. Scheduler traffic is significantly less bandwidth-consuming when looking at it from bits/bytes perspective. The bottleneck is the ability of the scheduler to respond to significantly more requests within the timeout period.

I know you guys currently run on MySQL, but if you ever want to switch it over to Oracle, let me know. I'm a professional DBA with experience on Oracle. Oracle Corp can probably give you a free license since you are "non-profit", and I can help migrate all the data over to it. An Oracle database can provide a much more robust backup and recovery strategy, performance throughput, etc. Just a thought. Just trying to help anyway I can.

Actually, our science database is on Informix. Our friend at Intel has suggested a change to Oracle (because he spends his time designing database solutions). One issue (other than cost, although a free license sounds good) would be porting our science DB code to Oracle (API, Informix specific code, Additional support code) If you know someone who could volunteer to do it, it might help.

The other issue would be getting us up to speed in administering Oracle.

I took a very quick glance at some of the code, and it all looks to be mostly C code. This shouldn't be too difficult to port it over to Oracle. Most of the code would stay the same except the connector to the database. The SQL calls can probably stay about 90% the same. Shouldn't be too difficult.

As far as administering Oracle, I can help set up the new database, port all of the data over, set up backups, tune it, and provide pointers in managing it. I can even volunteer to help out with some of the administration.

If you like, I can start asking around for people who might want to help with the code part. I know quite a few people that are interested in SETI that might help out for such a good cause. I can even confirm from Oracle that you can get the license for free (I'm about 90% sure of this, because you won't be making a profit from it.)

You can shoot me an email at my personal email address in my profile, if you want to look at this a little more.

Has anyone thought to have users set BOINC Manager to "No New Task" to reduce the load on the Scheduler???

Just had a thought. As a way of thanks to Sun Microsystems for their genorous donation may I humbly suggest naming the new server Helios.

In case you don't know (as unlikely as that seems) Helios is the Greek sun deity.

OK, I'll support the notion of naming it after a Sun-God, but there are SO many more interesting and obscure variations, How about:

Amaterasu (Japan)
Apollo (Greco-Roman)
Freyr (Norse)
Garuda (Hindu)
Helios (Greco-Roman)
Huitzilopochtli (Aztec)
Inti (Inca)
Liza (Africa)
Lugh (Celt)
Re (Ra) (Egypt)
Horus (Egypt)
Shamash (Sumerian)
Surya (Hindu)
Tonatiuh (Aztec)

I guess it will take them some time to get it up and running to.. And then there might be problems getting work the first day due to everyone trying to connect.. I have paused all my computers for SETI project. Will resume them tomorrow or the day after depending on how the restore goes.. :)

I did "pause" the project so my servers dont spam the project making upload of results impossible..

By the way.. Does anyone know what "RAC:33" on my reply (under my nick) means?

No change- Tuesday if everything goes right & nothing goes wrong, Wednesday is more likely & my personal guess, Friday if nothing goes right. Early-mid next week if things that can't go wrong do go wrong.

Don'r forget to apply Hofstadter's law to any estimates.

A rule of thumb introduced by Hofstadter for calculating an approximate time is to double the number and step up to the next higher units.

So if 1 day is quoted, assume 2 weeks. But lets hope they didn't originally mean 24 hours.

So how long before we can expect to see some new WU's being sent out. As my machine is running very low indeed. I think I will be out of WU's by this time tomorow morning.

Let me please suggest "Sol" (which happens to be sun in spanish) although I believe (AFAIK) that it is also the astronomical name for our warmth-giver.

I too would like to wish you all the best in the next few hours.

My cravings are getting worse. poor Rossetta must be steaming now and ready for a break from all the extra work she has had crunched for her.

So one good thing to come from this is that those who ran out of W.U's have done extra work for other sites.

Good Luck with setting up and hope it goes Hunky Dory as the shakes are getting bad now

Concidering they are hoping to get the new server today, Monday, you have to factor in time for them to do all the backend work, get it running, probably have a burn in period, get the database up and running, before it becomes live. I would say at the very earliest maybe after the outage Tuesday, but thats a big maybe. I would more count on towards middle to the end of the week.

here's a link for names of the Sun from various cultures and societies;

http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names/solar.htm

I'm kinda partial to

Eleadoro-- M gift from the sun (Spanish/ Greek)
Bhanuprasad (M) Sanskrit gift from the sun
MEHRDAD m gift of the sun (Persian)

gift of the sun

1. because its exactly what it is
2. it's exactly what it does (process gifts from suns)
