How do we go about changing the cache size?

... ...

Regards,
Ozz.

Click on "Your Account" at the top of the page, go to "General Preferences" and click "View or Edit". Depending on where you have your computer at, you need to click "Edit" under either "Default", "Home", "Work", or "School", then change the setting listed as "Connect to network about every
(maximum 10 days)", to a value of your choice.

......

I think we should instead look for this setting:
"Cache enough work for an additional ... days"
"(maximum 10 days; requires 5.10+ client)"

See the word "Cache"?

Amaterasu (Japan)
Apollo (Greco-Roman)
Freyr (Norse)
Garuda (Hindu)
Helios (Greco-Roman)
Huitzilopochtli (Aztec)
Inti (Inca)
Liza (Africa)
Lugh (Celt)
Re (Ra) (Egypt)
Horus (Egypt)
Shamash (Sumerian)
Surya (Hindu)
Tonatiuh (Aztec)

The kitties vote for Shamash.

It should be either Ra or Shamash!

Regarding Apollo, it was considered more a god of daily light, whereas Helios was the true Sun god.

If you haven't read the front page news, Sun is coming through with a replacement science database server (yay!) which will be arriving Monday afternoon.

More on this later (or read previous threads to find out more information about the outage).

mmmmmm I'm a Beatles lover so I will sing "Here come the Sun" :)

The big question is what kind of specs that this new Big Boy that Sun is whipping up for S@H.

As a hardware geek, I'm very curious too. This is great news that Sun is coming through with another donation. Whenever you have time to get around to it Matt, I'd be interested to know what's under the hood. 8-)

If I remember correctly, Thumper is a v40z (and apparently was a prototype), and I'd kind-of expect the new machine to be a production v40z.

... and with any luck, they'll just drop in the old hard drives and we're golden.

Ok, from my page it doesn't say that, so what I posted is correct for what I have, thank you.

Close, but not quite. The v40z is jocelyn. Currently jocelyn is a replica of the BOINC database machine. Sidious is the current BOINC database. Thumper was the SETI@home science database and was a prototype Sun Fire X4500. The price tag on the replacement is a bit higher a v40z (even though they are currently on sale for $24,000) and we certainly are grateful to Sun for reducing that to a price we could afford.

The server should be in our hands sometime on Monday.

A Sun Fire x4500 with the full 24 TB storage is what has been noted in other threads. Even at that, Eric's notes on how much of the storage was in use suggested a larger storage capacity may be needed relatively soon.

The storage situation isn't quite that dire in that a significant proportion of that space was, in effect, a cache for the multibeam data on its way to the LBNL HPSS system. I think that all of it could be recovered except to the previous 7 days of science database activity. The size of the cache could be reduced to increase the available space for the database.

Since the drives from thumper should be in working order, we should be able to put together a 12TB (24 drive) machine to use as a backup for the science database. We're working on various options (i.e talking with people) for getting a 24 drive chassis with MB and processors.

Thanks Guys. I appreciate it.

And kudos to SUN too for their generous donation. We're fixin' to buy some more servers at work, and it was a coin-toss between SUN and Dell (we currently run a mix of SUN FIRE V20 and V40 boxen as well as some Dell PowerEdge stuff). SUN, you just tipped the balance in your favor!

Ozz.

I know you guys currently run on MySQL, but if you ever want to switch it over to Oracle, let me know. I'm a professional DBA with experience on Oracle. Oracle Corp can probably give you a free license since you are "non-profit", and I can help migrate all the data over to it. An Oracle database can provide a much more robust backup and recovery strategy, performance throughput, etc. Just a thought. Just trying to help anyway I can.

Hi all

Well, thanks Sun Microsystems !

For the new "reborn" server name, may I suggest "Phoenix" ?

There is one setting that controls the cache for earlier than 5.10 (which is not out yet) and that is the Connect Every X days. Mind that with deadlines in tghe 4.5 day range setting this to much greater than a day is going to cause more trouble than you would expect.

My cruncher ran out of work yesterday sometime, so to prevent more network hassles, I've set it to "No new tasks" until the new science database is up and running.

Since the new server is due to arrive on Monday, it would be safe to assume it won't be fully functional until at least Tuesday, possibly Wednesday. (Thursday in my part of the world) There's always a lot of work involved in setting up a new server and hooking it into an established system, much of which is testing. Has Sun had enough time to do a "burn in" test? If so, they've really pulled out the stops!

While the donation is a great thing, and deserving of celebration, patience is still needed, and I'm now running Einstein as my "emergency back up" project. I hope others are doing the same.

Again, thanks to Sun Microsystems.

Again, a pat on the back to Matt and the crew for their hard work, and many thanks for keeping us up to date and informed.

Might be worth putting a note on the configuration page to the effect "Caches of 1 day or more are only of use if only running 1 project. If running more than one project then half a day or less is the best setting" or similar.

Not bad timimg for me.. I am shutting down the little farm in the garage, I was going to wait till I hit the 1M mark. oh well. :)
Summer heat and all. ;)
The reporting of results has been slow though. Not sure why. Looks like there would be less and less as times goes on.
