First of all: great news - whew! SUN really didn't waste much time with their rescue campaign. Can't wait to get new WUs :-)

Since this is my first posting I'd like to tell a little bit about myself. I joined the project back in 1999. I was an "average happy cruncher" who didn't care to much about how the project was financed. Over the years I contributed more than 19.000 hours of computing time. I loved to see my CLC (remember? CLC=Command Line Client) running, sometimes 24/7. I recently rejoined the program after receiving an e-mail that asked me to do so (good boy..).

But with this outage things have changed and I donated some money - and please do NOT say "thank you", instead sho(o/u)t on me for being that late ;-) Maybe that's the good thing about the technical desaster, that at least some of the dumbass'ed meatheads like me finally woke up and realized that it isn't enough just to spend their computing time.

So "chin up" and maybe next week we are happy crunchers again.

Just had a thought. As a way of thanks to Sun Microsystems for their genorous donation may I humbly suggest naming the new server Helios.

In case you don't know (as unlikely as that seems) Helios is the Greek sun deity.

Lovely idea!

I sent a modest amount to help with unforseen expenses. May the debug run like clockwork.

My suggestion for a new name is: Icarus, from Greek mythology.

It would be a warning to people to stay away from the new Sun once it’s installed.

OK, I'll support the notion of naming it after a Sun-God, but there are SO many more interesting and obscure variations, How about:

Amaterasu (Japan)
Apollo (Greco-Roman)
Freyr (Norse)
Garuda (Hindu)
Helios (Greco-Roman)
Huitzilopochtli (Aztec)
Inti (Inca)
Liza (Africa)
Lugh (Celt)
Re (Ra) (Egypt)
Horus (Egypt)
Shamash (Sumerian)
Surya (Hindu)
Tonatiuh (Aztec)

The system may need some burn in time. It's much better to have it checked out before it's installed.

Message 560266 - Posted: 5 May 2007, 15:09:28 UTC - in response to Message 559957.

BarryAZ asked a question about deadline extensions.

Matt previously addressed this issue. He said that no extensions are expected to be made because there is no reason not to upload and report your completed results now. That part of SETI and BOINC is still and has been working. The only outage is the ability to download new work units, although the reporting part can at times be difficult and may require multiple retries. You are urged to upload and report all your completed work units now.

I have been trying to upload my results for a few days now, to no avail! :o(

Finally ran out of work... re-enabled Einstein, even though Astropulse is handing out some ENORMOUS Wus atm... 28 hours 25 minutes and only 13.5% completed. (Running a 2.8 Gig PIV Celeron at 3.045 Gig)
Einstein is running 16 hour plus WUs...

I have to disagree with the "report your completed results" part here - many people have reported having problems getting the scheduler to respond to them at all. (see further, below!)

I have been trying to upload my results for a few days now, to no avail! :o(

I have to concur here, even though I had no problems with deadlines... I (at one time...) had 36 WU that had uploaded, but couldn't (or wouldn't...) report. (they eventually reported, after a 24 hour lay off - on the fifth re-try) With the problems that Galileo had, that should trigger a deadline extension. Added to that, is the problem of lots of robot (set and forget) boxes out there still bugging the scheduler for work, NTM the (probably) large numbers of users who haven't realized that there's a problem, yet! - who are also contacting the scheduler for work. All of those contacts make it very hard to report uploaded WU's...

When all SETI systems are restored, obviously there will be a gigantic crush to grab new work units. Some people will be greedy and try to download a week's worth of work right away, but I would urge everyone to reset your cache size to half a day, or no more that one day, to try to spread the few available work units around equitably. When the work units available to download reaches around 100,000, then boost your requested cache size to normal. I myself only carry a 2-day cache normally, anyway.

Whit

How do we go about changing the cache size? Prior to BOINC I used to run a cache for the Classic version, which protected me from outages. I'll never forget the time that copper-hunting thieves destroyed the fiber link, knocking the project off-line for quite some time. I was fortunate in that my cache allowed me to keep crunching for the entire outage, plus hold off for a couple of days after services were restored to give others a chance to get work units (and avoid adding to the resulting bandwidth issues that the initial rush created).

Once normal service is resumed and bandwidth has settled down I would love to increase the cache size on my crunchers to see me through such times.

Regards,
Ozz.

Click on "Your Account" at the top of the page, go to "General Preferences" and click "View or Edit". Depending on where you have your computer at, you need to click "Edit" under either "Default", "Home", "Work", or "School", then change the setting listed as "Connect to network about every
(maximum 10 days)", to a value of your choice. If this is your only project that you crunch for, and depending on how fast your system is, I have seen it recommended to set it at 6-7 days, as that should get you though any of the outages that the jroject has. The more projects you have, the lower you make this number.
