I must be lucky!

All completed WUs have been successfully uploaded and reported, despite the latest outage.

I shall echo the sentiments of those that are encouraging Matt and the others, and as Fuzzy said: "When it rains, it pours". I know the light at the end of the tunnel must seem a long way off, and I wish I had the resources to put in some financial help.

Please accept my verbal encouragement. You're doing a great job under difficult circumstances.

I'd like to echo what others have said before. Thanks to Matt and everyone else at UCB that have worked so hard to get and keep things working. I'd also like to say thanks to those that have donated to the project. I will finally be making a small donation once I get my next paycheck.

Speaking of donations, I was looking at the donation history page and notice that only 0.34% of Seti users have donated. I know not everyone has the ability to donate for various reasons, but with 600,000+ users it's hard to not imagine what would be possible if everyone donated just $1 (if the minimum donation were dropped).

Hi Matt!
First of all, keep on good job!
Second ;)
I don't know if Galileo is making the boo boo again, but my boinc client is trying to upload a new result, and says that there is a problem communicating the project (i know, i know, thumper is RIP for now), and later says that it's impossible to contact the Scheduler.
Curiosly, it only happens several times (Overload?) but I thought that would be better U to know this.
Well, as I said above, keep on with this good work, and get lucky with Thumper.

Hello Justin!

I totaly agree with you except on one small practical thing. They have to send out a letter for tax reasons to every donour. And that mail costs money, so with a dollar given it would probably cost around two dollars to send the letter. And that is not counting the foreign donours who cost more to mail. I must add that it felt silly for me since I can't even deduct the donations to a US entity to get a mail that has cost around 5 bucks to reach me. But...
But for the rest I agree! Donate more and often, and you US guys can even DEDUCT it:-) If ten percent donate ten dollars we will together give Seti 600.000 dollars...

Oh my... I am really starting to sound like Pappa...

Nice sentiments, but unfortunately, not real world. There is a reason for having a minimum donation amount: it costs in both time and money to process each donation. If the minimum $ is not met, it actually hurts the project to get a donation. :-(

lol, but both of you are right. Sadly, that is the real world. Since I'm an Aussie, though, I can't deduct it, so I wouldn't require a receipt. Just you wait 'til I finish college, and get that overpaid, underworked, cushy job! ;)

I've mostly just scanned over most of the posts, so maybe this has been brought up, but if people are talking about donating for this particular issue, who is to say receipts are actually necessary? If there were say a paypal account set up by someone from the project, and without soliciting (because then it probably has to be "official") simply let us know what that was, many people might be willing to make some kind of "donation" that way, without the need for recognition or receipts. Just an idea...

As far as I know noone except a US citizen can deduct when donating to a US entity, so perhap's they could remove us from mailing system? We do fill out where we are from so it shouldn't be impossible.

I do not require a tax receipt either. I am in Greece, so the donations are not tax-deductible either.

So this is why I can't get any new work and I keep getting the message that the project servers are down?

MATT,
I have a QUESTION ABOUT DONATIONS.

How does the SETI staff handle those contributors who have wished to truly remain anonymous and have mailed a cash contribution of $1, $5, or even $10 or more in an envelope with no return address or tracking information?

What kind of government reporting headaches and acknowledgment expenses do those anonymous donations create? Have those individuals' efforts helped or hindered the project?

I sincerely hope you, Matt, or one of the other SETI staff members, sees this question and posts a reply.

Kevin

OOPS! I mistakenly acknowledged Seti USA in Down Time (May 01 2007) for their massive donation... I know that the Donated RAM (from Seti USA)
Regards

Pappa

That is the problem - the SUN has crashed -

I wonder - how that donated server (that was not accepted) would have worked out in a situation like this.

Not my point at all "PAPPA" (you are NOT my PAPPA!, and I don't have to answer to you) - you were not involved in every discussion or email I had with them (Eric, Matt, etc..)now were you- And why bring SETI.USA into this - this was just a couple of people or two donating hardware.
I gave them and open book - told them that they could choose and order any machine they wanted, they choose the machine, decide the specs and order it. A new machine, just about anything they wanted. And I would reimburse them or pay for it. I was not taken up on the offer. Not my problem. I have the email chain to prove it if I must. Now the offer is withdrawn.
Pappa - your comment is not welcome, you are not the all knowing gate keeper, this is not your project.
OUT!

No one has given a link to the Sun hardware that is Thumper... I will take time to give you the link so that everyone can see...

Sun Fire X4500 Server

Pappa

ADDENDUM: Well, galileo just barfed again. At least it crashed and rebooted itself cleanly this time, and the culprit revealed itself: blown CPU. No big loss, as this system is edging towards retirement anyway, and can handle its current load with one less CPU (especially as these are ancient 400 MHz sparcs).

I am making strides towards turning bruno into the scheduler just as soon as I submit this post. Probably won't be enacted until next week, though.

- Matt

Matt,

What are the spacs for a server? If you would post them we may be able to pull together one or two for backup.

We do thank you for your work, hope you get some sleep soon.

Roy

Thanks PAPA. you and the rest keep up the good fight.

Roy

That all depends on where you are.
From the Seti@home donation page:
Q: What if I'm not in the U.S.?
A: The conditions for tax deductibility described above may only be applied to taxes paid within the United States of America. For any other country or territory, the local legislation and/or International Conventions may sometimes allow you to benefit from similar local deductions, which would apply for the reasons of supporting educational projects and scientific research. You must verify these conditions yourself.

I'm in Canada, and have donated before. I've received a tax receipt, and my accountant says that it's not a problem. Since the donation itself goes through Berkeley, I assume it's covered under the "educational projects and scientific research" section.

If I remember correctly, the machine had to be named SETI.USA or something like that as a condition of the donation.

I don't know the University policies on naming rights, but it's probably not simple. The rules may have been written for buildings, and wrangled over by attorneys.

I'm sure if there was a simple way of doing it, they would have been happy to have the machine.
