Some observations about Zalman cooler,

@A/C , I recently installed a Zalman cooler in my old p4 which always suffered from heat because it is in a uATX case. initially i wasn't getting any better temps than then stock hsink/fan , which suprised me as it is larger and copper.

So next I tried cleaning off the interface goo that came with the Zalman and replaced it with bog standard silicon goo from an electronics store, I now get ~28 degrees C at idle and < 40 degrees C full load, with fan set to minimum speed.

Might be worth a try ? the Zalman supplied goo was pretty thick stuff that came with mine.

with corsair RAM, On a different newer p4 I installed XMS2 5400C4 stuff, cheaper / slower than mentioned which also runs at 4-4-4-12-2T quite happily, This leads me to believe that the rating printed on the module is a 2T setting. I have not tried to push it any harder yet, I think the board's northbridge may need extra cooling, and that I'll have to read some more about the individual settings that make up that specification. It will br interesting to see what conclusions you guys come to with that ram you have.

I don't know why I'm getting these high temps. I was careful when I installed it, and I did use a good silver compound. Really strange. The core 0 temp is what scares me because that's the one that goes up to 60C while the others show 57-58 (according to Speedfan). I'll keep watching to see if the temps go down. If not I'll have to consider getting an even bigger heatsink.

Hmm, it could just be that the command timing on your motherboard is just its default setting. I'm not sure but the XMS modules should work at 1T. I have Kingston HyperX that works well with different mixtures of voltage, timings and command rates. But I get two different readings for the command timing. The BIOS shows 1T while CPU-Z shows 2T.

mine is running at 3.7Ghz stable for months, with 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 and a MatchII active cooling. running temperature is -31 Celcius :)

it is crunching rosetta now.
the V8 will be running my new version by friday. I found my bug.

who?

I'm not familar with the MatchII, any info or link on it?

I believe he may be referring to a Prometia Mach II phase cooling unit. Used to phase cool the cpu below zero for OCing. There is also the Vapochill LS. I am using a custom made phase cooler on my quad to assist a bit in the OCing department.

I have the Intel D975XBX2 and the QX6700...
...and "only" a be quiet! , 500W PSU...

[full load]
If I let run him normal, he take 194.5 W
If I "overclock" the RAM from CL5 to CL4, then 199.3 W

I have the Thermalright SI-128 with Papst 4412 F/2GP- PWM-(4pin)- fan, but he is not very quiet...
I use him with BIOS-FAN-CONTROL "ON", and with room 23.3 °C he run at ~ 1,600 - 1,800 RPM (min. 1,000 - max. 2,500 RPM)
To hold the heat-spreader-temp on "25" (BIOS) or "-25" (SpeedFan V4.32)
It's the "processor thermal margin", somebody know what does this mean?
Because the max. heat-spreader-temp is 65 °C... so 65 °C - 25 °C PTM = he run at 40 °C ?
I asked this (PTM) for a long time, but to today, nobody could tell me what this is! :-(
I called Intel... they couldn't say this too... ?!?!
Cores #0 to #3= 69- 74 °C

I don't want to overclock so much, only little because of cooling (noise)... (and my PSU ;-)
(I don't want to change the voltage of the CPU...)

But I don't know how...

O.K. I could "overclock" the RAM from 5-5-5-18 to 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1 V @ 800 MHz, because it's a profile in BIOS with the Corsair ;-) TWIN2X2048-6400C4 (two matched CM2X1024-6400C4)...
I can chose: automatic, profile1 and user
But with profile1 the POST say, PC can't start-> wrong settings
But if I use profile1 and after I change to user (and of course, I change nothing more ;-), then the PC start... :-)
But if I remember correct, I can't change the T1/T2 settings...

There are some sides in the internet where I can info me a little, or here are people around who want support me? ;-)

It's correct, if I don't change the voltage of the CPU, but go to the limit of stable MHz... then the CPU will be only little bit warmer?

O.K., your opinions?! :-)

BTW. What is with the "northbridge", then she will be warmer too, or?
active cooling needed?

Changing bus speed or multiplier, what's better?

I saw/read, stable running @ 3.0 - 3.2 GHz without changing the voltage

What's better because of life of the CPU, not to change the voltage?

Ok, thanks, I BADLY need to upgrade my cooling, I'm running SETI 24/7 and I'm running anywhere between 51 & 56, depending on the ambient (sp?) room temp. Think the Mach II or Vapochill will do it?

[EDIT] WoooHooo, I just saw the price of the Mach II, that's not going to work, lol. Now I have to see the price on the Vapochill. [EDIT, EDIT] Oh well, Vapochill is out too, same price range ~ 850 big ones.

No OC around here?

So...

If I do it like this:

300 x 10 = 3.0 GHz CPU, 800 MHz 4-4-4-12@2.12V RAM, it will work?
Then I'll increase the Host Clock little more...
Or other RAM (MHz, x-x-x-x) settings?
(maybe special settings, because of ratio FSB:DRAM ?)

For testing he is stable or not, the best prog?
Because I don't want to damage the WUs! :-)

BTW. I could boot the BIOS, if I used not good settings. Or maybe I must reset then with the jumper the BIOS?

The best testing you could do is by yourself. Just see how much you can increase the CPU frequency without having to adjust the voltages. You might have to change the RAM timings to 5 if you go above 800MHz. If not you could try reducing to 7** with 4 timings. Doesn't your motherboard have a BIOS profile you can save? If anything goes wrong you could load the BIOS settings that were stable.

Right now I have a very stable overclock at 2610MHz with my RAM at 800MHz/4-4-4-12. After I reinstalled the Zalman and applied the thermal compound MY OWN WAY, I got the temperatures down to a much better level. The overclock load temps were the same as the stock temps. So the Zalman is pretty good after all. The temperatures are about the same as the SI-128's.

Thanx for support!

Now I have "only" OC the RAM to CL4 with active cooling...
(In BIOS in can't change T1 / T2) (Maybe there is a profi modus in BIOS to change this?)

In the past, I wasn't interested because of OC... the OCs let run Prime95 to look it's stable...

Maybe now to let run Memtest86+ V1.70, to look it's stable?

The QX6700 is much hotter than the Q6600...
Thermal Design Power: 130W to 105W

So it's not so easy to cool him... :-(

If I change "only" the Host Clock, I can damage the CPU too?
For example if I go to high...

What can happen then... maybe frozen... reboot/"press reset button" then and change settings again in BIOS?

I'm sorry for my stupid questions... I'm a newbie... ;-)
And the QX6700 was not very cheap... ;-)

Very good :) Don't worry about the RAM command timing setting. If it stays at CL4 at 2T it's better for stability anyways. I'm not aware of how the command timing can be changed if it's not supported in the BIOS. Maybe someone else knows something about that.

In the past, I wasn't interested because of OC... the OCs let run Prime95 to look it's stable...

I haven't tried Prime95 because I read that it didn't support quad core CPUs yet. There's supposed to be some kind of trick to get it to work with the quads. Memtest appears to work with the quads though so Id' go with memtest to check for any memory problems.

It's the same as the 3.7GHz Pentium EE. It's even worse for the new QX6800 because it can't overclock well due to the low heat specs.

I don't think so, unless it's really high or something. If you increase the multiplier by 1 and slightly increase FSB there isn't any serious danger. If anything the computer will fail to start or just freeze while in the OS. If it freezes in the OS usually you have to restart it. Then change the settings in the BIOS. :)

When I first applied arctic silver I followed their new suggestion for the quad cpus. They say you should apply the paste in a straight line on the heat spreader. I did that and when I removed the heatsink I saw that it didn't even cover some areas of the spreader. When I put my heatsink back in I spread a small amount all over the heat spreader instead. That worked better.

I think some chipsets (Intel?) only support 2t timing, and it is not settable in the bios. I think I used to see it in the Gigabyte AMD boards I used to run, but I don't see a setting for it in the Asus Intel bios I am running now.

I had done this with the compound like you and made the same experiences... :-)

With the QX6700, I had let run the ~ 62.40 WUs with ~ 1h 15 min. without OC.
After changing the RAM, 5-5-5-18 to 4-4-4-12 @ 2.12 V ... ~ 1h 13 min.

Then I changed only the multiplier from 10 to 11 and after to 12... and nothing happened... I had the suggestion it's ~ 1 min. slower.
One time with "12", I had BOINC, SpeedFan V4.32, CoreTemp V0.95 running and then I started CPU-Z V1.40 and the PC was rebooting...

CPU-Z V1.39 and V1.40 cannot read the right settings... it was all the time the normal 266 x 10

After reading some sides... they changed only the Host Clock not the multiplier for OC...

In a few minutes I will test to rise little the Clock... without multiplier...

You would test it with changing the multiplier too?

Other QX6700 user, please post your settings! :-)

Now I have a QX6800 ;-)

I have now 293 x 10 = 2.93 GHz, without changing the voltage!

The 800 MHz RAM is now "automatic" from 400 to 440 MHz (CPU-Z V1.40)(they are only 6400C4 Corsair!)

The CPU is now ~ 2 °C and the temps from the MoBo are ~ 1 to ~ 2 °C hotter.

This can be healty for the PC?

When he will burn?

Now he need ~ 215 W (+ 15 W) from the "be quiet! 500 W PSU", this is O.K., or? ;-)

("normal" was ~ 195 W, after changing CL5 to CL4 with 2.12 V then ~ 200 W)

I'm little confused...

If Simons app start, she make a little benchmarktest...
And it's not important how much I restart this WU, or?
So the first start make the benchmarkresult and will be printed online, or?

Then have a look:

speed: 2666 MHz -- read MB/s: L1=9951, L2=8418, RAM=5639

speed: 2809 MHz -- read MB/s: L1=10485, L2=9079, RAM=6051

speed: 2933 MHz -- read MB/s: L1=9953, L2=8618, RAM=5621

So the best performance with the speed in the middle?

Is there a prog around with which I can make a small benchmarktest after every settings changing?
->With the necessary/important parameters for SETI<-

No, no... not BOINC, because of the Core (2) Duo - Bug! ;-)

Now from stock to OC:
~ 62.40 WUs now 8 min. faster! :-)

...don't forget, how are your settings? :-)

It's strange that the speed would be slower when you increased the multiplier, hmm. I would say the reason your computer was rebooting is because the processor was trying to run at 3.2GHz without the proper voltage adjustments. Don't set the multiplier that high again. Use the multiplier only at 11, and only if the FSB doesn't go any higher, or if you can't get a optimal CPU/RAM combination. You could try 11x267. That would take the processor to 2.9GHz. I'm thinking that the RAM speed might be lower at 11x267 because of the lower FSB, since you said it went up automatic to 440 at 10x293. You should stop at 2.9GHz if the mobo temps are getting high. I suggest you should find heatsinks for for NB and SB as well as a RAM cooler. One other thing that's important in keeping the temps down is a case with very good ventilation, like the Nikao Dragonfire or Cooler Master Stacker. It'll make a difference.

About me changing the multiplier, the multiplier on the Q6600 is locked so there's not much I can do about that.

The highest I'm willing to go right now without additional cooling or voltage adjustments is 2.7GHz. The temps are still very good. Those are the temps I have running Rosetta for 15 minutes.

8-)

I don't know how many Asus boards have it but the command rate option is available in the P5N-E SLI. Maybe it's only on the nForce 600 boards.

For those of you that simply are limited in funds and cannot afford Mach II or vapochill like for instance ME!!! then do what I did ... $200 usd bought me a Titan Robela Watercase with a digital readout on the front ... OC'd E6600 runs at 48c and 45c on the cores running at 100% on both.

just make sure you use distilled water and whatever coolant mix is recommended by your manuf.

The Titan Robela comes in four varieties, which are described below:

TWC-A88/AS (Solid silver aluminum front panel)
TWC-A88/BS (Shiny silver metallic coating on the ABS plastic front panel)
TWC-A88/AB (Solid black aluminum front panel)
TWC-A88/BB (Shiny black/silver metallic coating on the ABS plastic front panel)

Deluxe water cooling chassis
Excellent heat dissipation for CPU, GPU and inside the case
CPU : compatible with Intel P3, P4 (Socket 478/775), AMD K7, K8 (Socket 754/939/940)
GPU : compatible with most ATI and NVIDIA VGA cards
Easy installation
Super cooling radiator design with 12cm x 2 silent fans to provide ultimate heat dissipation
Cool light multi-function LCD panel to monitor the water level, water pump status, fan speed, noise level and temperature
Alarm for pump failure, fan failure, low water level, and over temperature
Compatible with Micro ATX, Standard ATX and Extended ATX (Dual CPU) motherboards
Including tool-free 5.25 and 3.5 device brackets and tool-free PCI slots
