I started this BOINCing for the science in Climate Change. Elsewhere I prefer to leave the science to scientists.

I started SETI because I read about it and found the subject interesting, so I wanted to be part of it.
I'm not a scientist, so I leave the science part to the scientists. I spend my little computer power to the project, and I have no clue what the scientists are doing with the data before they arrive at my computer or after they were sent back.
That's beyond my horizon. I am glad to operate my own stuff, not to speak of programming or something like that.

What other reason would there be?
The pretty screen-savers?
Or, you could be asking about why we came to the message boards. For that, I will say it is both for socialization and discussion of academic matters.
However, in light of ongoing discussions here and recent revivals, let's stick for the moment to "why we crunch."
As many of you know, I am engaged in research. I am also somewhat to fairly well versed in other things. However, I must ultimately say, as I have pointed out before, it is absolutely impossible for any one person to go back and verify every experiment in the areas they are interested in. If they research, they carve a few niches and remain informed about a few others. They cannot be jack-of-all-trades.
What I find most irritating is people that either are researchers that do not provide a shred of background/evidence into what it is they work on and so we do not know if they can speak as authorities, or arm-chair vicarious scientists through reading that also act as if they are authorities. (Reading outside one's area is fine. Acting as if you know more than you do and maligning others is not.)

Define science. Astronomy? Cosmology? Computer science?

I'm in it for the computer science, has been all the time, and since this project is the mothership for BOINC and a big testbed for distributed computing, I am here. My main interest at the moment is what's taking place at the moment at Astropulse, and since this project is closed linked to it, economically, scientifically and with the same staff, I am here too.

Yes, part of it is the science of distributed computing overall, I guess. Is this perhaps a little more transparent and understandable than the science of the particular projects.

For sure i'm in this for the science...I crunched Classic for about 5 months without ever posting on the message board...and it was a couple months after I started BOINCing in July '04 before i ventured into these boards...I've always been interested in Extraterrestrial life...So being able to help by crunching data for SETI@Home is sweet privilege.

I'm in it because it's interesting and exciting.

Spent a lot of time crunching for classic then lost my net connection.
Soon as I got back on the net I signed up for BOINC.

I'm in it for the science, not the score.
New puter in a week or two so I guess the throughput will improve soon.

I also crunch for the science and do not care about credits. I have replied somewhere else that I would still crunch projects even if there were no credits. I am in it for both the astronomy and computer science.
