Well, I quit smoking in the beginning of 1993 when everything was fine for me and I had the power to quit.
Then I was silly enough to take a cigarette in a situation of real emotional stress two years and a half ago, now I'm at one pack per day again... the old vice has me in it's fangs :D

Five (or was it six?) years ago my grandfather was told to stop smoking, because he would develop a "smoker leg" - but: he had never ever smoked in his entire lifetime. My own brother died aged 15 on cancer in 1987, without having smoked one single cigarette - so deadly sickness can hit both, smokers and non-smokers. Go figure.

But the worst thing of being a smoker here is that you are more and more discriminated everywhere. That really sucks!

I've given up smoking for two years now.I used to be like you Pawly; smokers have rights! Of course I'm glad I gave up for health and money in my pocket reasons. Now I just constantly chew on wine gums and spend my money on more expensive holidays. I used to enjoy the end of a holiday where you brought back loads of tax-free cigs and felt as though by going on holiday you were saving money - now I don't save but just spend more

Nice to see ya Sixpack! I'd like to hear more about the laser therapy if you don't mind. I've heard of it but never knew anyone who tried.

Basically it's a variation of acupuncture with a laser opposed to needles hehe. What they do is use laser on several acupuncture points and it helps to balance endorphin levels, thus helping to control the nicotine equation and the fits you experience within the first 36 hours or so after kicking the habbit. After 36 hours or so it's essentially flushed from your system.

(Now on too what I think after a year smoke free now . )

What they ( the cigarette companies ) don't want you to know, is after this period of time, that lovely feeling of anxiety you experience (which most automatically assume is a nic fit) is a result of sugar not nicotine. Why do ya think cigarette companies invest so much in certain non-smoking aides? Hmmmmm food for thought.

You see, cigarettes are packed full of sugar, and sends your system in to total chaos when you quit. On a certain level when one thinks about it, what a smoker trying to quit experiences is a lot like a what a diabetic may experience with not enough sugar in their system (just not as severe). Kinda makes sense why all those times before I tried to quit, I craved anything sugar. This is where that hypnosis factor comes in or for some its more a meditation technique if you will by helping you understand and deal with the sugar withdrawal and not go diving for a pack of smokes. They suggestions vary a bit but most suggest drinking large amounts of water to help flush the system, a lot of juices such as orange or grapefruit or natural tropical blends ( you do want to avoid most natural sugar in foods and drink for a while until your system adjusts after quitting).

Now that's what they told me, and that's what sold me on it. I am sure people can debate some of my thoughts, but the bottom line is it worked for me, it's worked for friends and family and I figger it really can't hurt for someone to try. At the end of it all, it's no more expensive to get laser/hypnosis as it is to buy the cigarettes themselves or they money wasted in the more popular nicotine replacement products. Bottom line is never quit trying to quit....

Remember it was YOUR mind that got you into smoking. It was yyour choice to start, we all had to teach ourselves to smoke, we were all born smoke free. So it's easy to realize it's your mind that has to get ya out of this mess.

Good Luck :D

Definately something to think about. All people have differing specific body chemisties and if it worked for you then maybe it will work for others.

I envy people like you Fuzzy. My father (when he was smoking) was the same way. And when he decided to quit it was "Cold Turkey" with no problems! It has such a hold on me. Pack a day since 14 years old.

I actually quit back in 1991, where I in January, after having spent too much money for the Christmas, had very little money left. So it was a question about buying food or cigarettes, and I chose to buy food. And I started to jog at that time, so when I a month later should attend a course and bought a packet of cigarettes for that, I could feel it the first time I was out jogging after having smoked that whole package. And I thought that the jogging results were too "expensive" to me to waste with smoking.

So I was non-smoker until January 13'th 1996, the last day my father lived. The worst part of quitting were the social gatherings where I used to smoke, so I bought a plastic cigarette, I stopped out with cotton so it had the very same draught as my favorite brand in ciggies, and I inhaled and all with it. That helped me through a longer time and then I quited that one also.

The worst part about being a non-smoker is all the breaks you don't get when you don't want to go out to get a smoke. In my work I saw all the smokers take many longer breaks where I didn't have any excuse to take one. Which they often took advantage of!

My friend is a mormon and when I visit her, I don't smoke out of courtesy, and I use the plastic ciggie a lot when I'm with her.

Over the years I have given up for 6 months at a time, just for the hell of it, and just done cold turkey. Its not that difficult if you put you mind to it. I'm lucky in that I'm mainly a social smoker and not so addicted to niccotine as some are. At the moment I'm trying to get down to just 3 or 4 a day.

Then of course there is THE one...

Funny, that is not the one for me. In fact I don't need that one.

Oh, must be a guy thing then!!

this is what is on the front of cig packets here.
and may I say to my friends here, for your health, Please Stop Smoking. I have lost enough friends.

Looking at the same image on my pack of rollies.
My granddaughter saw this and some of the other images and freaked out !

Smoking IS a bad habit but I can't stop no matter what I try.

Roll another smoke ... Oh bugger, where's my lighter gone ?

It's been almost a year now since I smoked a cig. I got the laser therapy/ hypnosis and it seems to have done the trick. Though I admit like Mikey I spark up a nice Cuban (Cohiba Esplendito or a Nice Monte Carlo #4) for poker night ever month or so.

Nice to see ya Sixpack! I'd like to hear more about the laser therapy if you don't mind. I've heard of it but never knew anyone who tried.

And Misfit's right it stinks in here! I could open the window or we could go sit outside in the yard.

No, not outside in the yard, that's what they do to us all the time, make us go outside. No this thread is for the smokers here and we can smoke in here, they can go outside if they can't handle the smoke.

Typing while enjoying one of my FAVOURITE smokes of the day, after a meal!

Oh yes, that one! And the one to the morning coffee and the one to the get home from work drink, whether it's tea, water, or juice, and the having a break while typing one, and...

Still trying to cut down. Even the one after posting one...

Then of course there is THE one...

Funny, that is not the one for me. In fact I don't need that one.

I do enjoy that I can have days without smoking. I haven't smoked since the night between Thursday and Friday. And I won't be smoking before Tuesday - Wednesday at the earliest, maybe even first next weekend.

I have smoked one pack ( 20 cigs ) a day for 25 years. I started when I was 13, quit for a year or so when I was around 18, then stopped caring about myself and started again.

I have tried to quit a couple of times, but I have pretty much given up....

I now roll my own. It works out to about a dollar a pack.
