SMOKING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED: At ANY Public Building. In bars or restaraunts it is acceptable if there is a "patio" but you must not be under any type of covering (roofs, awnings) When going outside to smoke, you must be at least 20 metres aways from an entrance to the building. You may not smoke under an awning in the rain. Now I have not seen any INDIVIDUAL recieve a "Smoking Ticket", however the police have the power, if not the inclination, to write them. Cases of business owners getting written up are well documented. Fines range from $50 000 - $250 000 CDN. The laws came into effect over time, first public places, then businesses such as Bars and Rest. were told to go smoke free or install seperatly ventilated rooms which could not comprise more than 25% of total Patron capacity. Many added the rooms, at great expense, only to have them banned 2 short years later. The bar and restaraunt(B&R) industry has long relied on the smoker. While only making up approx. 30% of the populatiopn, Upto 85% of Bar patrons and 65% of Restaraunt Patrons were smokers during the "ancient times", about 6-8 years ago. Many of the small "Mom and Pop" businesses had to close thier doors when the laws changed and most restaraunts without patios have felt the effects in their cash registers. It was said the the "Non smokers would then return to the places that they did not feel comfortable previously", this is simply not the case. B&R's have thier doors almost blocked by smokers having a puff between courses or pints. Reservations in the winter months are easy to come by even in the nicest restaraunts. IN recent news there has been talk of outlawing smoking in cars/houses where children are present ......... akin to child abuse they say. I can understand the arguments for and against such legislation but it's the double standard that pisses me off. If smoking is that bad,.....BAN IT!!! Don't charge me an arm and a leg (I smoke "cheapies", HA!, @$55 CDN. per 200 cigs)most of it Taxes, and them tell me I can't smoke anywhere at all!!! It's about protecting non-smokers from second hand smoke inhalation. I had to drive away from my office today and on returning I saw someone standing well away from the building having a smoke, so the smoke wouldn't blow back into the windows. When I smoked I can remember the horror of being forced outside to smoke. Now it's "get well away you puff addicts". Even though I am a smoker (mild one) I agree with all the anti-smoking legislation that is being introduced. Smoking harms your health, your wallet, and others around you. If it is now more difficult for me to smoke then "they" are in fact doing me a favour in the long run. I dont see it as big brother or infringing civil liberties at all. So when the government would make it more difficult for you to enjoy your booze or beer, would you then also say that they do you a favor in the long run? I'd rather doubt it. Account frozen...
