right, we've got david up and running and using Chickens optimised seti app to boot. We had fun doing it and finding various strange ways that Xandros does things. We got his BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefox environment variable set in his .bashrc so the web buttons in boinc manager work. He's got a start/stop script bassed on this with some modifications for username and directories. And he's got boinc manager working from a desktop icon. Blimey, that does sound much for 2 weeks work but thats what 9 hours time difference does. |

Those directories are good. Yes it is david who runs seti Doesn't say much asfollows david@XANXLHNLM30:~/BOINC$ pwd /home/david/BOINC david@XANXLHNLM30:~/BOINC$ Hope that is what you wanted oh by the way thats quite obvivously where boinc lives home/david/BOINC (question why is boinc in capitals?i guess it denotes something but what) Looking good so far or am i speaking to soon. |

Those directories are good. Right, need to know a few other things now which user runs seti? (I think its david) which directory has boinc, boincmgr,run_manager etc if you open a console and get into the directory where you see those files and the type pwd and tell me what it says. when I've got those, I can make a file up that we then need to put in /etc/init.d and do some magic so its also in /etc/rc5.d |

Mate had a look at that site looked as plain as mud and as easy as falling of a How the devil are you ,fine and dandy,i trust. Sorry have been away all day mate of mine is involved with the railways historical society and it is the 150th anniversary of the innaugaration of a local rail line so i went in to have a look at the displays etc, most interesting. Very strange i went into a console typed in both those commands returned "no such command you blithering idot" or words to that effect. So i went in manually and found them yes /etc/init.d exists looks to contain a lot of system files, there are also the following similar /etc/rc0.d /etc/rc1.d /etc/rc2.d etc/rc3.d etc/rc4.d etc/rc5.d etc/rc6.d etc/rcS.d All of which look to contain system files of various types. I guess no problem with a directory then Young SETI is having a crunching time he does rather enjoy a good crunch. |

Mate had a look at that site looked as plain as mud and as easy as falling of a It shouldn't be a problem that there aren't specifically Debian/Xandros instructions, the many flavours of Linux "usually" do this sort of thing the same way. Some files maybe in different places but we'll find them. Can you see if you have a directory called either /etc/init.d or /etc/rc.d you can do this by typing ls /etc/init.d and ls /etc/rc.d If we can confirm one of those, then thats where we need to put a file (we'll create that later) |

There's actually a page here on the seti website about doing this but I can't find it.aha, found it [http://www.spy-hill.net/~myers/help/boinc/unix.html#start Dont know if i have this right somehow dont think so Mate had a look at that site looked as plain as mud and as easy as falling of a log, only problem i can see is there doesn't seem to be any provision for Debian/ Xandros.but if your game so am i up to you, your the initiator i just press the buttons. I printed out the whole transaction(all 38 pages of it) yes very interesting,i can see where i made mistakes and the actual thred of how the start was composed,i now trust some will stick in my feeble brain, which i must say is not all that flash these days |

Gidday mate, how goes it in the land of the old dart, been an absolutely glorious autumn day warm, sunny, light breeze and its a nice cool crisp evening, currently 75F(dont use that stupid metric system, yeah i know i am old fashioned) in my living room, very pleasant. Yes i realised youg SETI had uploaded, strange it didn't do it till it was around half way through the next work units, must wait for optimum traffic flow i guess. Gee i'm a dummy i just realised i have't been shortening the lines, sorry No i dont have the computer on 24/7 Yes i am the only person who uses it I will have a look at that site and see if i can make head nor tail of it Thanks for initiating activation on the UKBOINC site will give you a hoy on it. As i suspected Xandros networks got excited about me trying to activate it through there and then just closing it when it would't work.i went to download a pdf editor through it and it wouldn't do it i had to run as root the following command dpkg --configure -a hope this has rectified the problem,i haven't checked yet.Think i know why it wouldn't work, just realised,it was trying to install version 3.??hmmm SETI though continues to motor serenely oblivious to all this nonsense.Jolly fine lad. |

Morning David doesn't as yet seem to have uploaded those results.I shouldn't need to do that manually should i.no, just leave things alone and it will sort itself out. In fact, its reported those results now, it did it about 1 hour ago. I have another problem(how strange) have registered at the UKBOINC forum site and activated the a/c but when i try to log in to post it tells me i have used an incorrect or inactive user name or password,so i don't know perhaps you can resolve it your end.I think the admins have to manually activate your account. I can see you've joined and I've left a message for an admin to get you going. The only issue now is i still have to start the process manually and then minimise, which is obvivously not the optimum,Yes, we can get it to run like that, its how mine runs. But if you thought we had fun getting to where we are now, you're gonna have a whole barrel of laughs doing this bit ;-) Its a bit tricky, requires logging in as root and creating a file in a directory far far away. There's actually a page here on the seti website about doing this but I can't find it. It'll probably help if you can tell me how you use your computer, Is it on 24/7 Are you logged in 24/7 Any other users other than you |

HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!!!!! praise the LORD and pass the AMMUNITION. We have lift off my friend the links are working as they should from the BOINC manager, last night i was getting a strange repeat message on the BOINC RUN_MANAGER sugesting that gdk(i think) was critical and had failed along with a whole heap of dots squiggles dashs and lashs but they seem to have disappeared, think it was something to do with manager not connecting to the seti site that seems to have resolved itself, maybe the restart sorted everything out. This calls for mass celebrations,a public holiday even, well maybe a nice cup of tea,at least i could handle that. The only issue now is i still have to start the process manually and then minimise, which is obvivously not the optimum, ideally i would like it to commence on startup then run in the background, dont know if we can do that, but it would be nice. Once again thank you a great deal for your invaluable help and patience in putting up with my amateur fumblings. At least i have learnt a great deal and enjoyed the chase immensely |

Must find out how you break up the message as you do makes it so much easier, is it just cut and paste certain setions? Just thought, pressing Enter every now and then will get rid of those reaaaalllllly long lines Or did you mean how to get the quotes in? If you scroll over to the far right hand side, theres a "Reply to this post" link That brings up the message window quoting the whole of the previous message. Its then just a case of adding your own [ q u o t e ] and [ / q u o t e ] around what you want to highlight (without spaces though). |

export BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefoxright, there's ya problem ;-) you're getting the /usr/bin/firefox in your console because you've got the "which firefox" in .bashrc And you're setting the BROWSER bit 3 times (but that won't hurt) If you're up to editing .bashrc again, you want to remove those bottom 3 lines, just leaving the 1st "export BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefox" |
