You might want to contact Matt directly since he probably hasn't had time to keep up with the thread since yesterday. Eric @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

I'm working on the list. The problem is tracking down what each machine needs. One thing we could use fairly quickly for an existing machine is four 2GB PC3200 (DDR400MHz) Registered ECC DIMMS. I'm checking out memory needs for the other machines. Sidious needs a new CPU. I'll get the details on that shortly. Eric @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

I am sort of surprised that 220v is not being used already since it cuts the current requirements in half and you can run more equipment over the same size wire. It would be very simple to convert an existing 110 run to 220v as long as the line is isolated. (They might want to run a completely new run if they are not sure or can not trace it down.) If they ran a new run with 3 + ground wire a small panel could be used to supply both 220 and 110 off the same line if necessary. In the long run this would be more flexible. At least something to think about. :) |

Blurf and Kevin et al... You may notice that I have backed out of the conversation... When I saw what was happening and then got caught up in it it was sad... Normally I am fairly quiet and unassuming about most things... So to that extent, if I have offended Anyone I extend an Appology... Searcher You may have hit on something... most larger electrical panels bring 220 and split the phase... So in some circumtsances it might be adding a 220 breaker if there is enough room/current capacity. I am sort of surprised that 220v is not being used already since it cuts the current requirements in half and you can run more equipment over the same size wire. Don't forget, you need two grounds. One ground for power and one for safety. I can see where they could need to pull wire and put in more air conditioning. After than they need more room. The problems of a shoe string budget. Searcher |

I mean, if our team got together and donated some drives for the server, does that mean that we could demand that it be named SetiUSA/Calm Chaos? can my team toss in a couple of drives and then we can call it NavalCalmSynergyUSA |

Eric I can have this to you within the next 36 hours - only question - what type of machine is this going on - Mobo ? My vendor is asking. Do you have a preferred name brand ? And I did send Matt an email, but have not heard back from him yet. Thank you! |

@TimeLord04: Thanks for offering a server as well. @ Reuben Gathright, You're welcome. @ Eric, Matt, and Pappa, OK - I've confirmed with my contact that this is now locked in and written in stone... I am coming up on Saturday, the 10Th. On the 11Th I will be allowed into the building in Fremont where the Servers are, I will inspect them and get detailed specifications. Then, if they are logged in as Administrator, (please let this be the case), I will change the Admin Password and also create a User Account Profile in my name on each Server. This will allow me to safely shut down each machine and still get into them later if need be/if necessary. Then I will shut down all three machines, pack them up for travel with the APC Rack Mount Backup Battery and take off for my Parents' place. Monday the 12Th, I will contact Eric, (I left a phone message for him today), and arrange a meeting time to drop off the Backup Battery and the Server of his/Matt's choice for Monday. The whole day will be left open just for this... So, morning or afternoon, or whatever; doesn't matter to me. From Danville to UCB should take about half an hour maybe 45 minutes with traffic. I'm looking forward to getting all of this finalized with Eric and Matt. If either of you have questions, call me today at home. Eric and Pappa have my number and e-Mail Address; so, Matt can get the information from them. Sincerely, TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

It a Dual Opteron server with a SuperMicro H8DA8 motherboard. Although we have CL2.5 memory in it now, but CL3 would probably be fine, and wouldn't kill us as much as the low memory is. The machine's primary use is as a file and database server, although Kevin cripples it with computing on a regular basis. Brand doesn't matter too much, other than it helps to have the mfg say it works with the specific board. Eric @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

Lets get Kevin one of his own boxes then :) _ I will send this stuff out, and see what I can do quickly. Thank you for the update. And I did get a reply back from Matt. I sent him some information back. Let me know via email what you think. |

I am sort of surprised that 220v is not being used already since it cuts the current requirements in half and you can run more equipment over the same size wire. With one important point that keeps being overlooked. Berkeley does not let just anyone do electrical work on campus. It has to be done by someone from the appropriate department. That's why it'd be far easier to adapt the server to 110v. |

Adding a 220 outlet may not be a simple as some here suggest. The electrical service to most commercial buildings is completely different then what you get with a residential feed. Your house may have two single phase lines coming in that when added together give you 220. A commercial building may get 480 volt or more multiple phase feed that takes special transformers and associated wiring considerations. This is due to the current requirements of large buildings. To bring 220 into the closet may require a completely different transformer which including installation would cost more than going and ordering a couple of brand new custom designed servers that run on 110 and run at light speed. Every problem can usually be solved. How about a Step Up and Step Down Transformers. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

Every problem can usually be solved. How about a Step Up and Step Down Transformers. Rats, I came up with this solution yesterday and sent it to Dan, but he never replied. I wanted him to announce it to the boards. Here is what I sent him: Here is your simplest, cheapest power solution. The power supply will convert the unit to use 110 vac. but also will make it more expensive to run. but it will work nicely. Sorry for not getting back to you. I am still waiting to see if the servers will meet there specs. chow for now. |
