Well, it's official, though it comes as no big surprise to many of us here: Lewis (Scooter) Libby, the former Chief of Staff for Vice President Dick Chaney, has been convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice in the CIA leak. One juror called him "The Fall Guy", and one thing the story only touches on, is that the media journalist Novak, (who I think is a rat and a snake in the grass), got off scott free. Novak, you'll remember, is the media journalist who actually did the damage when he publicly revealed the identity of CIA agent Plame, whose husband had publicly criticized the Bush administration. Here's the full story below: ******************************** Libby guilty By SHELDON ALBERTS CanWest News Service WASHINGTON — Lewis (Scooter) Libby, the former chief of staff to VicePresident Dick Cheney, was found guilty Tuesday in a perjury trial that revealed deep rifts in the Bush administration and exposed a White House campaign to discredit critics of the Iraq war. An 11-person jury convicted Libby, once one of the most influential policy advisers in the White House, on charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to prosecutors investigating the leak in 2003 of a classified CIA operative’s identity. The much-anticipated verdict, reached after 10 days of deliberation, casts an ethical pall over the White House at a time when U.S. President George W. Bush’s approval ratings have slumped to 30 per cent. One juror, Denis Collins, said he considered Libby a sympathetic figure who was set up as a “fall guy†to protect Bush’s own political aides from prosecution. Bush, who himself was interviewed by prosecutors more than two years ago, watched television news coverage of the conviction at the White House. “He said that he respected the jury’s verdict (and) that he was saddened for Scooter Libby and his family,†said spokeswoman Dana Perino. Libby, 56, is the highest-ranking White House official convicted on a felony since the Iran-Contra scandal. He faces a maximum 25 years in prison and $1.25 million US in fines. “The results are actually sad,†said Patrick Fitzgerald, the U.S. attorney who spent three years investigating who leaked the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame to reporters. “It’s sad that we had a situation where a high-level official, a person, who worked in the office of (the) vicepresident, obstructed justice and lied under oath. We wish that it had not happened. But it did.†The charges against Libby stemmed from the disclosure in July 2003 that Plame was an undercover CIA officer married to former U.S. ambassador Joseph Wilson, who had publicly accused the White House of twisting intelligence to justify the war in Iraq. No one was ever charged with illegal disclosure of Plame’s identity. But jurors accepted the prosecution’s argument that Libby deliberately lied about conversations with journalists to mask the fact he learned about Plame’s CIA job from Cheney. Over the course of the seven-week trial, witnesses testified Cheney was distraught over Wilson’s charges that the White House justified the war by making faulty claims Saddam Hussein had sought to buy yellowcake uranium from the African nation of Niger. Prosecutors introduced evidence showing Cheney and other administration officials sought to undermine Wilson’s credibility by suggesting his wife had arranged an assignment for him to travel to Niger to investigate the uranium claim. Cheney’s involvement included instructing Libby on talking points to rebut Wilson and picking the journalists to be provided the information. “There is a cloud over what the vicepresident did,†Fitzgerald said during the trial. In a statement, Cheney said he was “very disappointed with the verdict†and said Libby had “served our nation tirelessly and with great distinction.†Karl Rove, Bush’s senior political adviser, had also discussed Plame’s identity with journalists but was never charged. During the trial, defence attorneys said Bush aides wanted Libby to be the “sacrificial lamb†so Rove would not be implicated in a dirty tricks campaign. “There was a tremendous amount of sympathy for Mr. Libby on the jury,†said Collins, the only juror to speak to the media. “It was said a number of times, `What are we doing with this guy here? Where’s Rove, where are these other guys?’ We’re not saying that we didn’t think Mr. Libby was guilty of the things we found him guilty of but that it seemed like he was ... the fall guy.†Speaking after the verdict, Wilson said Libby’s trial made “very clear the extent to which senior officials in this administration were embarked on a disinformation campaign†about the war in Iraq. “The methodology used was to engage in really an unprecedented smear campaign, which would have succeeded had it not also been illegal to divulge the name of a covert officer,†he said. Libby’s attorney, Theodore Wells, said he planned to file a motion for a new trial. If that fails, Libby plans to appeal the verdict. There was immediate speculation over whether Bush would pardon Libby before he leaves office in early 2009. “President Bush should now pledge that he will not pardon Scooter Libby,†said Senator Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat. Perino, the Bush spokeswoman, called the idea of a pardon a “wildly hypothetical situation†and said she was “aware of no such requests†from Libby. Libby’s conviction marks a major victory for Fitzgerald, the Chicago based U.S. attorney who was plucked from relative obscurity in 2003 to investigate the leak of Plame’s identity. Having dispensed with the Libby case, Fitzgerald moves directly into the high-profile criminal trial of Canadian media baron Conrad Black. |

Nobel Prize medal stolen from campus March 6, 2007 BERKELEY – Thieves have stolen a Nobel Prize from the University of California Berkeley. The prize was awarded to the late physicist Ernest O. Lawrence in 1939 for invention of the cyclotron and was the first-ever won by the university. The gold medal had been stored in a locked display case at the Lawrence Hall of Science, a science museum in the hills above campus. The theft was discovered Thursday morning, a museum spokeswoman said. Museum officials offered $2,500 as a reward for its return and information leading to an arrest and conviction. Associated Press Now if only SETI@home was installed in the medal... me@rescam.org |

Thanks. There was no problems over there, if you mean the riots, they have ended, so far... And I didn't go outside the central station, it was raining heavily and very very cold. Even the station is a non-smoking area and I smoke, I wouldn't even go outside for a ciggie, it was too cold. The last half hour, when I had looked at everything, I wanted to look at, and I really just wanted to go home, I went down to the platform, because often the train is waiting there (it wasn't, it came just in the last minute, I think it came from Kastrup, the airport), I had a ciggie there, and I called my friend just to let the time pass. It was nice chatting with her, the time went a little faster. She told me, by the way, that the weather at home was quite nice yesterday, almost spring and nice and warm, so it's weird, even the country is so small, that the weather can be so different. There are still big snowdrifts over there after a snow blizzard a couple of weeks ago, where we didn't get one single snowflake here. And I have slept like a baby in almost 12 hours, I guess I needed it. So good morning to all. I bought three butter croissants over there, there are some very good bakeries at the central station (it's almost like a small village with some quality shops there, some of them open 24/7), so I had one last night, and I'll have the two remaining now. And I bought some Easter eggs over there, some really good ones. It was actually my plan to take the metropolitan and suburban electric train to Nørreport station and then take a walk down Strøget (a row of shopping streets in central Copenhagen) to visit some of the shops there and to buy some things from there (I know the area well from when I lived over there), and also buy some of those fine Easter eggs in one of the chocolate shops, but they have them also at the central station. So have some: They are marzipan with pistachio, nougat and marzipan, marzipan with Larsen cognac, marzipan with Grand Marnier, marzipan with mocca, and pure marzipan. Enjoy.
