Is Paris Hilton learning? For once in her life, no soft cell UNION-TRIBUNE EDITORIAL May 12, 2007 Please, somebody confirm that Los Angeles jails don't allow cameras inside. However many days that super-rich, super-thin, super-hedonist Paris Hilton might spend in jail – odds are it won't be the full 45-day sentence – are that many days without breathless accounts of her clothes, hair, Bentley, TV show, parties, home-made sex tape, all of which seem to have mesmerized a portion of young America and an oversized portion of the media. For all her 26 years, we've managed to maintain our “mundane†lives without the “beauty and excitement†she apparently provides aspiring, envious fans. Now, though, so-called serious media are offering somber accounts of her latest travails. Or is it her only travail? Paris' driving has landed her in trouble before but not in Los Angeles' Century Women's Detention Center. Whether celebrities believe it or not, there can come a time when their publicists, peer adoration, wealth and people to blame for any mishaps can't right their wrongs. Paris reached it with her violation of probation: repeatedly driving on a suspended license while on probation for an “alcohol-related†reckless-driving conviction. She reached it again with a belated statement of remorse – new lawyer, new tack – that rang as false as her jewelry is genuine, and presaged an appellate argument blaming her celebrity for the judge's harsh penalty. Predictably, her fans (with her blessing) posted a petition on the Web demanding a gubernatorial pardon. Unpredictably, another appeared demanding jail time. At last look, jail was winning. And jail it likely will be. Reversal on appeal would be suspiciously lenient. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, recipient of campaign donations from Paris' grandfather, says he has more important things to do than rush to keep her out of jail. All the rest of us do, too. me@rescam.org |

Good Morning everyone! I'm back from the City Market early today. I needed to avoid the Mother's Day crush. It's amazing around here that so many people leave their shopping for Mom to the last minute. Saturday morning means French Toast with Bacon and natural Maple Syrup. Enjoy! |

Well, we all do, Champ. But really, I thought that's some very dramatic aging for just 10 years, myself. Maybe I'm wrong though. :-) |

What Politics Does To A Man: Here's two pics of Tony Blair. The first, taken 10 years ago, before becoming Prime Minister. The second, taken yesterday, when he resigned after 10 years on the job. Before and After: Wow! |
